History (continued): -

13 May 1941:  A detachment from 807 Road Construction Coy RE arrived at Kaldadarnes "to complete laying of concrete on runways".

29 May 1941:  231 Coy Pioneer Corps started further construction work on Kaldadarnes airfield.

 5 Jun 1941:  RAF Kaldadarnes was established.  Wg Cdr R H Carter was appointed as first Station Commander, the field having previously simply been under the command of the OC 98 Sqn.

31 Jul 1941:  Det Com 231 Coy. reported all three runways at Kaldaπarnes complete and operational

20 Nov 1941:  1407 Met Flt formed at Reykjavik (2 Offs and 25 ORs from 269 Sqn).

 6 Mar 1943:  River Φlfusα surrounding Kaldadarnes airfield overflowed and inundated airfield and lower camp site.  Six P-38 Aircobra aircraft of 33 (US) Sqn Det returned to base.  Water two feet deep.  269 Squadron relocated at RAF Reykjavik.

 7 Mar 1943:  32 RAF officers and 721 airmen were evacuated from Kaldadarnes to Reykjavik airfield and nearby camps.

28 Nov 1943:  RAF Kaldadarnes was officially closed, leaving behind a Det of 5021 Airfield Construction Squadron.

History: -

 7 Jul 1940:  One Btn of the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa and a Btn of the Fusiliers Mont Royal arrived at Reykjavik and two days later were deployed to Hveragerdi (Headquarters), Kaldadarnes and other locations in defence of Southland.  Kaldarnes and Sandskeid were identified as the only two possible makeshift landing sites in Southland.

27 Aug 1940:  First section of 9 Battles, of 98 Sqn, led by W/Cdr. Ashton in L5343 took off for Iceland escorted by two Sunderlands.  Five hours and twenty minutes later they all landed safely at Kaldadarnes, L5343 thereby allegedly becoming the first RAF aircraft to set its wheels on Icelandic soil.

Approval for the requisition of this site for use as a Fighter Operational Training Unit aerodrome was issued in March 1941.   In May 1941 its use was changed to that of a Bomber OTU.

It was used periodically by Hercules aircraft of the Lyneham Transport Wing until Lyneham closed.

Notes

It was renamed RAF Kuala Lumper (SP) on 21 May 1946 and reverted to RAF Kuala Lumper on 1 September 1946.

It is also known as Simpang (also spelled as Sempang) Airport, Sungai Besi Airport/Airbase.

It was transferred back to the DCA, Malaya on 15 November 1947.

When the RAF Task Force, Malaya was  redesignated RAF Station Kuala Lumper on 20 September 1948, it controlled the following: -
