Notes

This was originally called Castel Benito, it was renamed RAF Castel Benito (No 17 Staging Post) on 1 August 1945 and RAF Castel Benito (SP) on 1 June 1946.

On 15 February 1951 its policy was revised as follows to provide: -

  1. A joint user airfield (the appropriate signals, control and navigational aids to flying are provided by MCA under joint user arrangement)

  2. Staging facilities and route servicing for RAF and foreign military aircraft to the extent of the following monthly aircraft movements: -

    1. Multi-engined - 200

    2. Twin-engined - 60

    3. Single-engined - 100

  3. First and second line servicing for Station Flight aircraft (1 UE Anson C Mk 19)

  4. 24 hour airfield buffet service (capacity 400 meals per day)

  5. Transit accommodation and messing facilities for: -

    1. 12 officers, 24 NCO aircrew (slip crews)

    2. 20 officers, 30 SNCOs, 50 Cpls/Airmen in transit.

  6. A Desert Rescue Section with appropriate MT and Signals communications.

  7. Airfield fire services for RAF and Civil aircraft.

  8. Accommodation and accounting facilities for No 651 (AOP) Squadron HQ and No 1908 (AOP) Flight.

  9. Emergency accommodation for 1,000 transients daily.

On 15 June 1951 its policy was further revised to be: -

A self-accounting unit, under the control of AHQ Malta to provide: -

  1. Staging facilities and route servicing for RAF and civil aircraft

  2. Airfield crash and fire services (other airfield facilities at Castel Benito will be provided under MCA arrangements)

  3. Desert search and rescue facilities

  4. A station flight aircraft equipped with 1 UE Anson C Mk 19 embodying appropriate first and second line servicing

  5. Administrative services for No 651 (AOP) Squadron

It was renamed RAF Idris in 1952 at the request of the Libyan government.
