  2. Transit accommodation for up to 20 officers, 15 SNCOs and 25 Airmen

  3. Full domestic and administrative backing for: -

    1. AHQ East Africa

    2. AHQ East Africa Communication Flight

    3. No 7 Mosquito Control Unit

    4. RDO and SDS East Africa

    5. No 4 Mobile Oxygen Unit

  4. Limited domestic facilities for: -

    1. HQ Works Area, East Africa

    2. No 82 Squadron

  5. Police Guards and Wardens for all units controlled by AHQ East Africa

  6. Reserve MT Pool for all units in East Africa

Originally known as Landing Ground 144.  It was renamed RAF El Adem (No 12 Staging Post) on 1 August 1945 and RAF El Adem (SP) on 1 June 1946.

On 15 February 1951 its policy was revised as follows to provide: -

  1. A joint user airfield (RAF manned) together with the appropriate signals, control and navigational aids to flying.

  2. Staging facilities and route servicing for RAF and civil aircraft to the extent of the following monthly aircraft movements: -

    1. Multi-engined - 180

    2. Twin-engined - 320

    3. Single-engined - 60

  3. 24 hour airfield buffet service (capacity 400 meals per day)

  4. Accommodation and messing facilities in emergency for: -

    1. 20 officers, 30 SNCOs, 50 Cpls/Airmen in transit.

  5. A bulk supply section

  6. Administrative support for seven meteorological out-stations.

  7. Emergency accommodation for 1,000 transients daily.

On 15 June 1951 its policy was further revised as follows: -

A self-accounting unit, under the control of AHQ Malta to provide: -

  1. Full airfield facilities, except refuelling which is carried out by Shell Co on contract, including  appropriate control, signals and navigational flying aids.

  2. Staging Post facilities and route servicing for RAF and foreign military aircraft.

  3. A station flight aircraft equipped with 1 UE Anson C Mk 19 plus appropriate first and second line servicing

  4. Desert search and rescue facilities

Approval for the requisition of this aerodrome for use as a satellite for RAF Riccall was issued in September 1940.

It was a sub-station of No 42 Base from 24 Mar 1943 to 1 Sep 1945.

The domestic accommodation was transferred to the War Office on 18 November 1946.

It was redeveloped after WW2 as a advanced base for the USAF Strategic Air Command until 1958

It operated ass a relief landing ground for RAF Church Fenton and RAF Linton on Ouse until September 1992

It is now the home of the Yorkshire Air Museum.
