Distribution of Duties - Air Ministry (Jul 1939)


The Department of the Air Member for Development and Production

Air Member for Development and Production (AMDP)

  1. Direction and co-ordination of scientific research on aeronautics carried out by or on behalf of the Air Ministry.

  2. Experimental and development work on aircraft, aero-engines, instruments, ground equipment and accessories for the Royal Air Force and civil aviation.

  3. Experimental and development work on armament, kite balloons, mechanical transport and marine craft.

  4. Experimental and development work on radio communications, RDF, direction finding and blind landing equipment.

  5. Production of aircraft, aero-engines, armament, instruments, balloons, mechanical transport, marine craft, ground equipment and accessories, raw materials.

  6. Administration of Air Ministry factories, labour supply.

  7. Control of import and export trade in aeronautical material (in conjunction with CAS, AMSO and other government departments.

  8. Inspection of equipment and stores for the Royal Air Force, for experimental purposes and for civil aviation.

  9. Repair and maintenance of the technical and warlike equipment of the Royal Air Force  (in conjunction with AMSO)
