James Robin ALDIS (33362)

He entered the RAF College in 1936, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Athletics, Cross Country and Soccer.

He was commissioned on 30 Jul 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 6 Sep 1938.  He was killed in action on 8 Jun 1941 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He was killed whilst flying Hurricane, Z4364 of No 208 Sqn, which was shot down by a D 520 whilst carrying out a reconnaissance over Damascus.  He is buried in Damascus Commonwealth War Cemetery.

John Owen BARNARD (33358) CBE

He entered the RAF College in 1936, was a member of B Sqn.  He also represented the college in Hockey and Athletics.

He was commissioned on 30 Jul 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 6 Sep 1938.  He retired on 14 Dec 1968 in the rank of A/Cdre.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College and the RAF Flying College.

David Richard Spencer BEVAN-JOHN (33299) OBE

He entered the RAF College in 1936, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.

He was commissioned on 30 Jul 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 6 Sep 1938.  He retired on 30 Jan 1959 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

George Michael CARMICHAEL (33339) MBE

He entered the RAF College in 1936 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 30 Jul 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 6 Sep 1938.  He was killed on active service on 31 Dec 1944 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He was possibly killed whilst flying in Spitfire VB, EN861 of No 53 OTU, which crashed at Nettleton Top after control was lost in a tail chase.  He is buried in Cambridge City Cemetery.

Ronald Clarke COBBE (33361) DSO, OBE

He entered the RAF College in 1936 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 30 Jul 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 6 Sep 1938.  He retired on 21 Sep 1965 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College and the RAF Flying College.

James Frederick COOK (33368)

He entered the RAF College in 1936, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Boxing.  On graduating he was awarded the Abdy Gerrard Fellows Memorial Prize.

He was commissioned on 30 Jul 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 6 Sep 1938.  He retired on 1 Nov 1957 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Peter Henry CRIBB (33360) CBE, DSO and Bar, DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1936 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 30 Jul 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 6 Sep 1938.  He retired on 28 Sep 1966 in the rank of A/Cdre.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Raymond Alfred CRUICKSHANK (33364) DFC and Bar

He entered the RAF College in 1936 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 30 Jul 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 6 Sep 1938.  He was killed on active service on 3 May 1941 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He was killed whilst flying in Stirling I, N6012 MG-D of No 7 Sqn, which crashed near Oakington on its return from a raid on Hamburg, possibly having been damaged by a night fighter.  He is buried in Newport (Christchurch) Cemetery.

John Edward Tucker HAILE (33369)

He entered the RAF College in 1936, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.  On graduating he was awarded the Air Ministry Prize for War Studies and Humanities.

He was commissioned on 30 Jul 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 6 Sep 1938.  He retired on 31 Jul 1954 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

 

Robert Frederick HALLIWELL (33341)

He entered the RAF College in 1936 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 30 Jul 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 6 Sep 1938.  He died in service on 24 Feb 1941 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He was seriously injured whilst flying Blenheim I, L1104 of No 62 Sqn, which crashed whilst attempting a forced landing at Sungei-Patani, following an engine failure.  He was dragged clear of the aircraft but later died from his injuries and is buried in Taiping War Cemetery.

Derek George HEATON-NICHOLLS (33375)

He entered the RAF College in 1936 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 30 Jul 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 6 Sep 1938.  He resigned his permanent commission on 12 May 1946 in the rank of Flt Lt.

 

James Henry IREMONGER (33342) DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1936, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Boxing, Fencing and Swimming.

He was commissioned on 30 Jul 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 6 Sep 1938.  He retired on 1 Jan 1961 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Charles Brian Fabris KINGCOME (33319) DSO, DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1936, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.  On graduating he was awarded the Air Ministry Prize for War Studies and Humanities.

He was commissioned on 30 Jul 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 6 Sep 1938.  He retired on 26 Jan 1954 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Peter Charles LAMBERT (33357)

He entered the RAF College in 1936 and was a member of C Sqn , after being awarded a scholarship as an apprentice at Halton.

He was commissioned on 30 Jul 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 6 Sep 1938.  He retired on 30 Oct 1963 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

George Oldfield LINGS (33344) DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1936, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.

He was commissioned on 30 Jul 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 6 Sep 1938.  He was killed in action on 26 Apr 1941 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He was killed whilst flying in Blenheim IV, V6063 of No 110 Sqn, which was shot down by a fighter near Texel whilst on an anti shipping patrol.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Miles John MILEY (33345)

He entered the RAF College in 1936, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.

He was commissioned on 30 Jul 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 6 Sep 1938.  He was killed in action on 15 Sep 1940 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was killed whilst flying in Beaufighter If, R2067 of No 25 Sqn, which crashed on a night patrol near Biggin Hill.  He is buried in North Weald Bassett (St Andrew) Churchyard.

Arthur Dennis MITCHELL (33373) CVO, DFC and Bar, AFC

He entered the RAF College in 1936 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 30 Jul 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 6 Sep 1938.  He retired on 14 Mar 1962 in the rank of A/Cdre.

He later became Captain of the Queen's Flight

Alan Michael MURPHY (33346) DSO and Bar, DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1936, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.  He also represented the college in Athletics.

He was commissioned on 30 Jul 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 6 Sep 1938.  He was reported missing in action on 2 Dec 1944 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was killed whilst flying in Mosquito VI, PZ456 YP- of No 23 Sqn, which came down near Wezep after being hit by flak on a bomber support sortie.  He is buried in Oldebroek General Cemetery.

Charles William McNab NEWMAN (33347) OBE, DFC and Bar

He entered the RAF College in 1936, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Hockey and Rugby.

He was commissioned on 30 Jul 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 6 Sep 1938.  He retired on 2 Dec 1964 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

George William PETRE (33353) DFC, AFC

He entered the RAF College in 1936, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Athletics and Cross-Country.

He was commissioned on 30 Jul 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 6 Sep 1938.  He retired on 17 Dec 1966 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Gordon Hamish Martin PIRIE (33332) CBE, DL, JP

He entered the RAF College in 1936, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.

He was commissioned on 30 Jul 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 6 Sep 1938.  He retired on 29 Nov 1946 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He entered the RAF College in 1936, was a member of B Sqn.  He also represented the college in Hockey.

He was commissioned on 30 Jul 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 6 Sep 1938.  He retired on 3 Apr 1969 in the rank of A/Cdre.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Eric Orwell PORTER (33355)

He entered the RAF College in 1936 and was a member of B Sqn , having been awarded a scholarship as an apprentice at Cranwell.

He was commissioned on 30 Jul 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 6 Sep 1938.  He retired on 28 Jan 1948 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

Ronald Cooper ROTHERAM (33374) OBE, DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1936, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Rowing.

He was commissioned on 30 Jul 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 6 Sep 1938.  He retired on 27 Aug 1972 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was a graduate of NATO Defence College and the RAF Staff College.

Ronald John SANSOM (33372)

He entered the RAF College in 1936, was a member of C Sqn.  On graduating he was awarded the R M Groves Memorial Prize.

He was commissioned on 30 Jul 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 6 Sep 1938.  He was killed on active service on 7 Jun 1942 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was probably killed whilst flying in Halifax II, V9977 of the TFU, which dived into the ground at Welsh Bicknor in Herefordshire.  He is buried in Steyning (St Andrew) Churchyard.

Michael SAVAGE (33370)

He entered the RAF College in 1936, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.

He was commissioned on 30 Jul 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 6 Sep 1938.  He was killed in action on 19 Mar 1945 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was killed whilst flying in Typhoon IB, RB214 'B' of No 175 Sqn, which spun into the ground near Hamm.  He is buried in Rheinberg War Cemetery.

Alan Charles TRIPTREE (33349)

He entered the RAF College in 1936 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 30 Jul 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 6 Sep 1938.  He was reported missing in action on 11 Aug 1942 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was killed whilst flying in Hampden I, P1337 'M' of No 489 Sqn, which was lost without a trace on a torpedo strike against the Lutzow off the Norwegian coast.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Charles Victor Douglas WILLIS (33354) DSO, OBE, DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1936, was a member of C Sqn.  He also represented the college in Hockey and Soccer.  On graduating he was awarded the King's Medal and the John Anthony Chance Memorial Prize.

He was commissioned on 30 Jul 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 6 Sep 1938.  He retired on 3 Mar 1965 retaining the rank of A/Cdre.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Claud Mandeville WRIGHT (33351)

He entered the RAF College in 1936 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 30 Jul 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 6 Sep 1938.  He was reported missing in action on 16 Oct 1942 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was killed whilst flying in Wellington III, BK312 of No 115 Sqn, which was lost on a Gardening sortie.  He is buried in Sage War Cemetery.

Robert Brian WRIGHT (33366)

He entered the RAF College in 1936 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 30 Jul 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 6 Sep 1938.  He was reported missing in action on 24 Aug 1943 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was serving as a navigator with No 156 Sqn, at the time of his death, the cause of which has not yet been ascertained.  He is buried in Berlin 1939-1945 War Cemetery.

Brian Pashley YOUNG (33376) CB, CBE

He entered the RAF College in 1936, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.  On graduating he was awarded the Sword of Honour.

He was commissioned on 30 Jul 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 6 Sep 1938.  He retired on 5 May 1973 in the rank of AVM.

He died on 26-Jul-1992.

Stanley Norman Tuttell WALLAGE (33350)

He entered the RAF College in 1936 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 16 Sep 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Sep 1938.  He was reported missing in action on 5 Apr 1943 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was killed whilst flying in Lancaster I, W4252 DX-X of No 57 Sqn, which was lost over the North Sea during a raid on Kiel.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

David Harry Wellsted HANSON (33363)

He entered the RAF College in 1936, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Boxing, Rugby, Cross-Country and Tennis.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He was killed in action on 3 Sep 1940 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was killed whilst flying Hurricane I, R4174 of No 17 Sqn, when he baled out too low following a combat with a Do 17.  He is buried in Mappleton (All Saints) Churchyard.

Ernest Alfred JOHNSTON (33343) OBE

He entered the RAF College in 1936, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Fencing.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He retired on 9 Oct 1968 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the Joint Services Staff College and the RAF Flying College.

He entered the RAF College in 1936, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  On graduating he was awarded the Air Ministry Prize for War Studies and Humanities.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He was killed in action on 17 May 1942 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He was killed whilst flying in Spitfire VB, BM426 of No 602 Sqn, which came down in the sea off Cap Griz Nez on Ramrod 33.  He is buried in Brookwood Military Cemetery.

Anthony James PAYN (33367) OBE

He entered the RAF College in 1936 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He retired on 11 Sep 1967 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Ian Lionel Baber AITKENS (33377)

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Tennis and Squash.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He retired on 28 Aug 1954 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Rugby and Shooting.  On graduating he was awarded the John Anthony Chance Memorial Prize.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He retired on 19 Jan 1969 in the rank of Gp Capt.

 

Henry Francis Dempster BREESE (33379)

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.  He also represented the college in Cricket, Rugby, Squash and Hockey.  On graduating he was awarded the Sword of Honour.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He was killed in action on 21 Apr 1941 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He was killed whilst flying in Catalina I, AH532 of No 210 Sqn, which failed to return from a convoy escort mission and is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.  He was the son of AVM C D Breese who was also killed on active service.

Colin Frank Mortlock CHAPMAN (33380) OBE

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of A Sqn.  He also represented the college in Squash and Tennis.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He was killed on active service on 29 Sep 1944 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was killed whilst flying in Anson I, NK607 of No 34 Wing SU, which flew into high ground at Merston in Surrey in poor visibility.  He is buried in Caterham and Warlingham (Caterham) Burial Ground.

Hugh Desmond CLARK (33382)

He entered the RAF College in 1937 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He retired on 1 Oct 1960 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

 

Henry John CUNDALL (33384) CBE, DSO, DFC, AFC

He entered the RAF College in 1937 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He retired on 27 Nov 1961 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College and the RAF Flying College.

Horatio James Rennie DUNN (33411)

He entered the RAF College in 1937 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He was killed in action on 1 Jun 1940 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was killed whilst flying Hurricane I, P3519 of No 87 Sqn, which dived into the ground near Yeadon following a stall during a turn at low level.  He is buried in Henham (St Mary) Churchyard.

Philip Richard Stewart FILLEUL (33383)

He entered the RAF College in 1937 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He was killed in action on 12 Sep 1944 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He was killed whilst flying in Fortress III, HB702 BU-A of No 214 Sqn, which came down in the Channel off Calais during a bomber support sortie.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Hubert Neville GARBETT (33386) DFC, AFC

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of C Sqn.  He also represented the college in Rugby, Soccer, Cricket and Shooting.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He retired on 6 Aug 1959 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College and the Empire Test Pilots School.

Stanley Bernard GRANT (33417) CB, DFC and Bar

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Soccer.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He retired on 6 Jun 1970 in the rank of AVM.

He was a graduate of the RAF Flying College and the Central Flying School.

Alfred Richard GULLEY (33385)

He entered the RAF College in 1937 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He was killed in action on 14 Jun 1940 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was killed whilst flying in Battle I, L5524 of No 150 Sqn, which crashed on a raid to Vernon-Poix.  He is buried in Aigleville Churchyard.

Noel Dan HALLIFAX (33404)

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He was killed in a flying accident on 8 Nov 1946 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was killed whilst flying in Mosquito NF Mk 30, NT266 of No 54 OTU, which dived into the ground near Helmsley in North Yorkshire after control was lost whilst flying in heavy cloud.  He is buried in Harrogate (Stonefall) Cemetery.

John Edward Ross HAYTER (33405)

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He was reported missing in action on 4 Oct 1943 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was killed whilst flying in Lancaster III, JA972 OL-D of No 83 Sqn, which came down in the North Sea off the Dutch coast during a rid to Kassel.  He is buried in Texel (Den Burg) Cemetery.

Malcolm Lessels George HENDERSON (33407)

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He was killed in action on 22 May 1940 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was killed whilst flying Lysander II, L6849 of No 2 Sqn, which was reported missing on this date. He is buried in Pihen-les-Guines War Cemetery.  Son of AVM M Henderson.

Ian Stewart HENDERSON (33406)

He entered the RAF College in 1937 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He was killed in action on 21 Feb 1941 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was killed whilst flying in Wellington IC, R1045 of No 149 Sqn, which failed to return from a raid on Wilhelmshaven.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Sir Lewis MacDonald HODGES (33408) KCB, CBE, DSO and Bar, DFC and Bar

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He retired on 2 May 1975 in the rank of ACM.

He was a graduate of the Joint Services Staff College, the RAF Staff College and the RAF Flying College.

Jack Albert HOLMES (33413) DFC and Bar

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Soccer, Athletics and Boxing.  On graduating he was awarded the Hyde Thompson Memorial Prize.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He retired on 30 Jun 1967 retaining the rank of A/Cdre.

He was a graduate of the Joint Services Staff College, the RAF Staff College, the RAF Flying College and the Central Flying School.

Michael Giles HOMER (33409) DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of C Sqn.  He also represented the college in Hockey.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He was killed in action on 27 Sep 1940 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was killed whilst flying Hurricane I, P2967 of No 242 Sqn, which was shot down over Sittingbourne by a Bf 109.  He is buried in Swanage (Godlingston) Cemetery.

Tom HURST (33388)

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of B Sqn.  On graduating he was awarded the King's Meda and the Abdy Gerrard Fellows Memorial Prize.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He was killed in action on 12 May 1940 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was killed whilst flying in Battle I, K9485 of No 105 Sqn, which was hit by flak and crashed into a hillside near Bouillon on a raid to St Hubert.  He is buried in Bouillon Communal Cemetery.

Ian Niell Munro MACDONALD (33387) AFC

He entered the RAF College in 1937 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He retired on 29 Mar 1960 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College and the Empire Test Pilots School.

Kenneth Peter MACKENZIE (33391)

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Athletics and Cross-Country.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He retired on 29 May 1959 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Hugh Vernon MATTHEWS (33389) DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1937 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He was killed in action on 13 Mar 1941 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was killed whilst flying in Manchester I, L7313 EM-C of No 207 Sqn, which was shot down by a Ju 88 intruder as it took off from Waddington.  He is buried in Waddington (St Michael) Churchyard.

Thomas Charles MURRAY (33392) DSO, DFC and Bar

He entered the RAF College in 1937 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He retired on 13 May 1959 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Harry PARKINSON (33393)

He entered the RAF College in 1937 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He was killed in action on 20 Dec 1941 in the rank of Sqn Ldr (Acting).

He was the Group Navigation Officer and killed whilst flying in Wellington IC, T2987 'O' of No 70 Sqn, which was shot down by flak during a raid on Benina.  He is buried in Benghazi War Cemetery.

Frank Anthony PLINSTON (33394) DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1937 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He retired on 16 May 1958 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

 

Holroyd Armitage Boardman PORTEOUS (33395) OBE

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Rowing.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He retired on 17 Dec 1966 retaining the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Colin ROBERTSON (33412) DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1937 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He was killed on active service on 12 Dec 1943 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was killed whilst flying in Mosquito II, DD754 of No 25 Sqn, which spun into the ground near Filey.  He is buried in Camelon Cemetery.

William Denys Butterworth RUTH (33397) DFC and Bar

He entered the RAF College in 1937 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He was reported missing in action on 12 Jun 1944 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was killed whilst flying in Sunderland III, ML760 of No 201 Sqn, which was shot down by flak from a U-boat (U-333) it was attacking.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

David SALWEY (33399) DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He was killed on active service on 6 Jun 1943 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was killed whilst flying in Spitfire IV, AA791 or Spitfire XIII, BM350 of No 542 Sqn, which collided with each other near Nettlebed in Oxfordshire.  He is buried in Botley (All Saints) Churchyard.

The Hon Peter George Alexander ST CLAIR ERSKINE ()

He entered the RAF College in 1937 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He was killed on active service on 8 Sep 1939 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was possibly killed whilst flying Hurricane I, L1631 of No 111 Sqn, which crashed at night on approach to Northolt.

Barry Osborne Cornelius STEVENS (33415)

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of C Sqn after being awarded a scholarship as an apprentice at Halton.  He also represented the college in.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He was killed on active service on 18 Jan 1940 in the rank of Plt Off.

A pilot with No 75 Sqn, he was flying in Anson I, N5024 of No 148 Sqn, which crashed in a snow storm near Totnes, Devon. He is buried in Harwell Cemetery. .

Nigel Avenel VAN SOMEREN ()

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He was killed in a flying accident on 19 May 1939 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was killed whilst flying an unidentified aircraft of No 59 Sqn which was involved in a accident at Penton Newsey in Hampshire.

Martin Walter WADDINGTON (33401)

He entered the RAF College in 1937 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He was killed in action on 10 Aug 1941 in the rank of Sqn Ldr (Acting).

He was killed whilst flying in Blenheim IV, V5854 MQ-L of No 226 Sqn, which was shot down by flak whilst attacking an enemy convoy.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Basil Hugh WAY (33402)

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of A Sqn.  On graduating he was awarded the R M Groves Memorial Prize.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He was killed in action on 25 Jul 1940 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He was killed whilst flying in Spitfire I, R6707 of No 54 Sqn, which was shot down by a Bf 109 on a convoy patrol.  He is buried in Oostduinkerke Communal Cemetery.

Peter Reginald Whalley WICKHAM (33403) DSO, DFC and Bar

He entered the RAF College in 1937 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 31 Jan 1939.  He retired on 23 Jun 1961 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Peter William Olber MOULD (33414) DFC and Bar

He entered the RAF College in 1937 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 15 Feb 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 14 Mar 1939.  He was killed in action on 1 Oct 1941 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was killed whilst flying a Hurricane of No 185 Sqn, which was shot down by a MC202 over Malta.  He is commemorated on the Malta Memorial.

Harry James WINCH (33416)

He entered the RAF College in 1937 and was a member of C Sqn , after being awarded a scholarship as an apprentice at Halton.

He was commissioned on 15 Feb 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 4 Apr 1939.  He retired on 1 May 1946 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

 

Douglas George MARSHALL (33390)

He entered the RAF College in 1937 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 22 Feb 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Mar 1939.  He was cashiered by order of a General Court Marshal on 11 Mar 1943 in the rank of Flt Lt.
