Peter Rathbone AP ELLIS (33180)

He entered the RAF College in 1935 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 31 Jul 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1937.  He retired due to ill health on 21 Nov 1969 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

 

John Chilton ARCHER (33181)

He entered the RAF College in 1935, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Hockey.

He was commissioned on 31 Jul 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1937.  He was reported missing in action on 27 Sep 1943 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was killed whilst flying in Wellington XIV, HF124 'Q' of No 407 Sqn, which failed to return from an ASR patrol.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Charles Felton ATKINSON (33205)

He entered the RAF College in 1935 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 31 Jul 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1937.  He retired on 4 Oct 1964 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

 

Peter Saumarez BUTLER (33182)

He entered the RAF College in 1935, was a member of C Sqn.  He also represented the college in Soccer.

He was commissioned on 31 Jul 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1937.  He was killed in action on 25 May 1940 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was killed whilst flying in Hampden I, P1318 of No 49 Sqn, which is presumed to have crashed in the North Sea during a mission to attack lines of communication in the Aachen/Krefeld area.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Harold Frederick COX (33183) AFC

He entered the RAF College in 1935, was a member of A Sqn.  He also represented the college in Cross-Country.

He was commissioned on 31 Jul 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1937.  He retired on 1 May 1959 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Philip Anthony Neville COX (33184)

He entered the RAF College in 1935, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Soccer and Fencing.  On graduating he was awarded the R M Groves Memorial Prize.

He was commissioned on 31 Jul 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1937.  He was killed in action on 27 Jul 1940 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was killed whilst flying in Hurricane I, P3808 of No 501 Sqn, which was shot down over Dover by a Bf 109.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Peter Wilfrid DAWSON (33210)

He entered the RAF College in 1935, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Hockey and Cross-Country.

He was commissioned on 31 Jul 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1937.  He retired on 31 Jul 1957 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Michael Stephen DONNE (33186)

He entered the RAF College in 1935, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.

He was commissioned on 31 Jul 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1937.  He was killed in action on 11 May 1940 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He was killed whilst flying Hurricane I, N2403 of No 17 Sqn, which was shot down by Bf 109s and is buried in Numansdorp Protestant Cemetery.

Robert Thomas FROGLEY (33187) CBE, DFC, AFRAeS

He entered the RAF College in 1935, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer, after being awarded a scholarship as an apprentice at Halton.  He also represented the college in Soccer and Athletics.

He was commissioned on 31 Jul 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1937.  He retired on 30 May 1966 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

John Percy Devaynes GETHIN (33188) DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1935 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 31 Jul 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1937.  He died in service on 10 May 1941 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was severely burned whilst flying Blenheim IV, L9174 'D' of No 203 Sqn, which was brought down by ground fire during a raid on Fort Rutbah in Iraq.  He was rescued by another Blenheim but died later that day in hospital and is buried in Ramleh War Cemetery.

Dennis Richard Dale GREEN (33189)

He entered the RAF College in 1935, was a member of A Sqn.  He also represented the college in Soccer, Athletics, Cricket and Hockey.

He was commissioned on 31 Jul 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1937.  He was killed on active service on 31 Oct 1939 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was killed whilst flying in Anson I, N5177 of No 108 Sqn, which collided with Anson, N5158 of the same squadron.  He is buried in Caversfield (St Laurence)

John Evelyn GRINDON (33206) CVO, DSO, DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1935, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Squash.

He was commissioned on 31 Jul 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1937.  He retired on 1 Sep 1959 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Thomas James HANLON (33190) CB, CBE

He entered the RAF College in 1935 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 31 Jul 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1937.  He retired on 1 Jul 1968 in the rank of AVM.

He transferred to the Secretarial Branch.  He was a graduate of the Joint Services Staff College and the RAF Staff College.

John McCulloch Middlemore HUGHES (33191) DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1935, was a member of C Sqn.  He also represented the college in Squash, Soccer, Cricket and Tennis.

He was commissioned on 31 Jul 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1937.  He was killed on active service on 7 Dec 1940 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He was killed whilst flying in Blenheim I, L1235 of No 25 Sqn, which crashed at Elton near Marham after control was lost n bad weather.  He is buried in Chilworth (St Denys) Churchyard.

Dermot Daly Alloysius KELLY (33207)

He entered the RAF College in 1935 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 31 Jul 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1937.  He was killed in action on 16 Jun 1941 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was killed whilst flying in Wellington IC, N2849 of No 103 Sqn, which failed to return from a raid on Duisburg.  He is buried in Heverlee War Cemetery.

George Victor Wildman KETTLEWELL (33192)

He entered the RAF College in 1935, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Rugby, Athletics, Hockey and Cricket.

He was commissioned on 31 Jul 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1937.  He retired on 1 Apr 1959 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College and the Central Flying School.

Richard Hugh Antony LEE (33208) DSO, DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1935, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Soccer and Hockey.

He was commissioned on 31 Jul 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1937.  He was killed in action on 18 Aug 1940 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He was lost over the North Sea whilst flying Hurricane I, P2923 'R' of No 85 Sqn failed to return from an interception over the North Sea.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

William Edward Michael LOWRY (33193) DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1935, was a member of B Sqn.  He also represented the college in Shooting.

He was commissioned on 31 Jul 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1937.  He was reported missing in action on 13 Nov 1945 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was killed whilst flying in Mosquito PR34, RG184 of No 684 Sqn, which crashed into a mountain side on fire en-route from the Cocos Islands to Singapore.  He is commemorated on the Singapore Memorial.

Eric Hugh LYNCH-BLOSSE (33194) OBE

He entered the RAF College in 1935, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Rugby.

He was commissioned on 31 Jul 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1937.  He retired on 30 Jul 1967 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College and the Central Flying School.

Kenneth Frederick MACKIE (33195) OBE, DFC and Bar

He entered the RAF College in 1935, was a member of B Sqn.  He also represented the college in Cross-Country.

He was commissioned on 31 Jul 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1937.  He retired on 15 May 1962 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College and the RAF Flying College.

Leslie Deane MAVOR (33196) AFC

He entered the RAF College in 1935 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 31 Jul 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1937.  He retired on 18 Jan 1973 in the rank of AM.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College and the RAF Flying College.

Ian Alan MEAD (33197)

He entered the RAF College in 1935 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 31 Jul 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1937.  He was killed in action on 2 Jun 1941 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He was killed whilst flying in Blenheim IV, L9192 WV-Q of No 18 Sqn, which was probably shot down by fighters during a raid on the Kiel Canal.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

William Edward Geoffrey MEASURES (33198) AFC

He entered the RAF College in 1935, was a member of B Sqn.  He also represented the college in Swimming.

He was commissioned on 31 Jul 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1937.  He retired on 23 Nov 1957 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He entered the RAF College in 1935, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Athletics.

He was commissioned on 31 Jul 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1937.  He retired on 30 Jun 1958 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

Alan Robertson OAKESHOTT (33209) DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1935, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Boxing.

He was commissioned on 31 Jul 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1937.  He was reported missing in action on 2 Jul 1942 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was killed whilst flying in Mosquito IV, DK294 of No 105 Sqn, which was shot down into the sea by Fw 190s on a raid to Flensburg.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

John Francis PEARCE ()

He entered the RAF College in 1935, was a member of C Sqn.  He also represented the college in Soccer, Tennis, Squash and Swimming.

He was commissioned on 31 Jul 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1937.  He was killed in a flying accident on 21 Mar 1938 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was killed whilst flying Gloster Gladiator, K7959 of No. 73 Sqn at Digby, when he crashed following an overshoot on landing.

James Maitland Nicholson PIKE (33200) CB, DSO, DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1935, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.  He also represented the college in Rugby and Boxing.  On graduating he was awarded the Sword of Honour and the King's Medal.

He was commissioned on 31 Jul 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1937.  He retired on 8 May 1969 in the rank of A/Cdre.

He was a graduate of the Joint Services Staff College, the RAF Staff College and the RAF Flying College.

James Anderson PITCAIRN HILL (33201) DSO, DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1935, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer, after being awarded a scholarship as an apprentice at Halton.  He also represented the college in Rugby, Boxing and Athletics.

He was commissioned on 31 Jul 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1937.  He was killed in action on 18 Sep 1940 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was killed whilst flying in Hampden I, P1183 OL-K of No 83 Sqn, which was shot down on a raid to Le Havre.  He is buried in Luc-sur-Mer Churchyard.

Eric TENNANT (33202) DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1935 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 31 Jul 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1937.  He was killed on active service on 13 Aug 1944 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was killed whilst flying in Mosquito VI, PZ291 of No 2 GSU, which hit the ground in Stanford Battle Area, Norfolk whilst carrying out a low flying practice attack on column of tanks.  He is buried in Little Stanmore (St Lawrence) Churchyard.

Sir (Henry) Neil George WHEELER (33296) GCB, CBE, DSO, DFC and Bar, AFC, FRAeS, CCMI

He entered the RAF College in 1935 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 31 Jul 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1937.  He retired on 3 Jan 1976 in the rank of ACM.

He was a graduate of the Imperial Defence College, the Joint Services Staff College and the RAF Staff College.

Philip Mervyn WIGG (33203)

He entered the RAF College in 1935, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Hockey, having been awarded a scholarship as an apprentice at Cranwell.  On graduating he was awarded the John Anthony Chance Memorial Prize, Abdy Gerrard Fellows Memorial Prize and the Hyde Thompson Memorial Prize.

He was commissioned on 31 Jul 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1937.  He was reported missing in action on 21 Apr 1944 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was killed whilst flying in Lancaster I, LL893 DX-J of No 57 Sqn, which was lost on a raid against railway targets at le Chapelle.  He is buried in Clichy Northern Cemetery.

John Trevor WILKINS (33204)

He entered the RAF College in 1935, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Athletics and Boxing.

He was commissioned on 31 Jul 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1937.  He was killed in action on 1 Mar 1942 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was killed whilst flying in Vildebeest, K6377 of No 36 Sqn, which was possibly shot down by a night fighter whilst attacking the Japanese invasion forces landing in East Java.  He is buried in Jakarta War Cemetery.

He entered the RAF College in 1935 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 31 Jul 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1937.  He retired on 31 Jan 1969 in the rank of AM.

Reymond Hervey DE MONTMORENCY (33185)

He entered the RAF College in 1935, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.

He was commissioned on 18 Dec 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 18 Jan 1938.  He was killed in action on 14 May 1940 in the rank of Fg Off.

A member of No 114 Sqn, he was killed whilst flying in Blenheim IV, L9179 of No 139 Sqn, which was shot down by fighters on a raid against Sedan.  He is buried in Laneuville-sur-Meuse Communal Cemetery.

George Howard David EVANS (33309) DSO, DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1935, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Athletics and Rugby.

He was commissioned on 18 Dec 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 18 Jan 1938.  He retired on 29 May 1968 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was a graduate of the Joint Services Staff College and the RAF Staff College.

Francis Derek BIRD (33300)

He entered the RAF College in 1936, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Athletics and Rowing.

He was commissioned on 18 Dec 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 18 Jan 1938.  He was killed in action on 22 May 1940 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was killed whilst flying in Blenheim IV, L9266 of No 59 Sqn, which was shot down by Spitfires whilst undertaking a bombing mission to Boulogne.  He is buried in Fricourt Communal Cemetery.

Gerald Oscar Ladler BIRD (33301) DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1936 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 18 Dec 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 18 Jan 1938.  He was killed in action on 15 May 1941 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He was killed whilst flying in Manchester I, L7325 of No 97 Sqn, which probably came in the sea possibly as the result of an engine failure.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Caradoc BOWEN-DAVIES (33302)

He entered the RAF College in 1936, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Athletics and Cross-Country.

He was commissioned on 18 Dec 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 18 Jan 1938.  He was killed on active service on 22 Sep 1941 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He was possibly killed whilst flying in Lysander II, L4810 of No 1 SAC, which crashed on this date.  He is buried in Laverstock (St Andrew) Churchyard.

He entered the RAF College in 1936, was a member of C Sqn.  He also represented the college in Athletics and Cross-Country.

He was commissioned on 18 Dec 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 18 Jan 1938.  He retired on 1 Jan 1953 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

 

Robert Maclean BURNS (33304)

He entered the RAF College in 1936 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 18 Dec 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 18 Jan 1938.  He retired on 18 Dec 1959 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

 

Alan CHALMERS (33305)

He entered the RAF College in 1936 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 18 Dec 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 18 Jan 1938.  He died in service on 10 Jun 1940 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He died from injuries sustained whilst flying in Battle I, L4951 of No 13 OTU which crashed in the circuit at Squires Gate.  He is buried in Abingdon Cemetery.

Ian David Grahame DONALD (33306)

He entered the RAF College in 1936, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Swimming.

He was commissioned on 18 Dec 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 18 Jan 1938.  He was killed in action on 19 Jul 1940 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was killed whilst flying in Defiant I, L7009 of No 141 Sqn, which was shot down during a convoy patrol.  He is buried in Tilford (All Saints) Churchyard.

Herman Francis GRANT EDE (33307) DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1936 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 18 Dec 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 18 Jan 1938.  He was reported missing in action on 9 Jun 1940 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was a member of No 263 Sqn and was lost in the sinking of HMS Glorious.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Thomas Arthur Francis ELSDON (33308) OBE, DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1936 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 18 Dec 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 18 Jan 1938.  He retired on 22 Oct 1959 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the Joint Services Staff College and the RAF Staff College.

Trevor James GEACH (33311)

He was commissioned on 18 Dec 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 18 Jan 1938.  He was killed in action on 28 May 1940 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was killed whilst flying in Whitley V, N1432 of No 77 Sqn, which crashed on a raid to Hirson.  He is buried in Campigneullies-les-Grandes Churchyard.

Dermot Evelyn GOULD (33312)

He entered the RAF College in 1936 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 18 Dec 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 18 Jan 1938.  He was killed in action on 5 Apr 1940 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was lost without trace whilst flying in Whitley IV, K9040 of No 51 Sqn, which was carrying out a night training exercise over the Bristol Channel and is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

James Bernard GRANT (33313) DSO, DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1936 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 18 Dec 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 18 Jan 1938.  He retired on 13 May 1959 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

James Reed GUTHRIE (33314)

He entered the RAF College in 1936 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 18 Dec 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 18 Jan 1938.  He was killed in action on 10 Jun 1940 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was killed whilst flying in Hampden I, P4336 of No 61 Sqn, which was shot down by flak during a mission to attack lines of communications.  He is buried in the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery.

He entered the RAF College in 1936, was a member of A Sqn.  He also represented the college in Rugby and Boxing, after being awarded a scholarship as an apprentice at Halton.

He was commissioned on 18 Dec 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 18 Jan 1938.  He retired on 20 Apr 1958 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

He was commissioned on 18 Dec 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 18 Jan 1938.  He was killed in a flying accident on 30 Jan 1939 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was killed whilst flying Blenheim IV, L4836 of No 53 Sqn, which crashed in the circuit at Odiham.

Sir John Hugh LAPSLEY (33320) KBE, CB, DFC, AFC

He entered the RAF College in 1936, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Cricket and Swimming.  On graduating he was awarded the John Anthony Chance Memorial Prize.

He was commissioned on 18 Dec 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 18 Jan 1938.  He retired on 6 Oct 1973 in the rank of AM.

Ronald LLOYD (33321) DFC, AFC

He entered the RAF College in 1936, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.

He was commissioned on 18 Dec 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 18 Jan 1938.  He retired on 10 Apr 1959 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was a graduate of the Joint Services Staff College and the RAF Staff College.

Hugh Gordon MALCOLM (33322) VC

He entered the RAF College in 1936 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 18 Dec 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 18 Jan 1938.  He was killed in action on 4 Dec 1942 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was killed whilst flying in Blenheim V, BA875 'W' of No 18 Sqn, which was shot down near the target whilst attacking Robb airfield.  He is buried in Beja War Cemetery.

Thomas Ivor MATHEWSON (33323)

He entered the RAF College in 1936 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 18 Dec 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 18 Jan 1938.  He was killed in action on 12 Feb 1942 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was probably killed whilst flying in Beaufort II, AW273 of No 86 Sqn, which failed to return from a sortie to attack German battle cruisers off the Dutch coast.  He is buried in The Hague (Westduin) General Cemetery.

Donald Conrad MAYBURY (33325)

He entered the RAF College in 1936, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.

He was commissioned on 18 Dec 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 18 Jan 1938.  He was killed in action on 12 Apr 1940 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was killed whilst flying in Wellington IC, P9269 of No 38 Sqn, which was shot down by fighters off the Norwegian coast and is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

John Derek MIDDLETON (33326)

He entered the RAF College in 1936, was a member of  Sqn.  On graduating he was awarded the Abdy Gerrard Fellows Memorial Prize.

He was commissioned on 18 Dec 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 18 Jan 1938.  He was killed in action on 9 Jul 1940 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He was killed whilst flying Sunderland I, N6133 ZM-Y of No 201 Sqn, which was shot down over the North Sea.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Lionel Martyn MOORE (33328)

He entered the RAF College in 1936 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 18 Dec 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 18 Jan 1938.  He retired on 1 Mar 1958 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Peter Geoffrey St George O'BRIAN (33329) OBE, DFC and Bar

He entered the RAF College in 1936, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.  On graduating he was awarded the Sword of Honour.

He was commissioned on 18 Dec 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 18 Jan 1938.  He retired on 18 Jul 1959 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Cyril Dampier PALMER (33330) DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1936, was a member of C Sqn.  On graduating he was awarded the R M Groves Memorial Prize.

He was commissioned on 18 Dec 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 18 Jan 1938.  He was killed in action on 27 Oct 1942 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was killed whilst flying in Spitfire VB, BM527 of No 234 Sqn, which was shot down by a Fw 190s on a Rodeo to the Ile de Batz area.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Alastair Dyson PANTON (33331) CB, OBE, DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1936, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.  He also represented the college in Cricket and Rugby.

He was commissioned on 18 Dec 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 18 Jan 1938.  He retired on 18 Dec 1971 in the rank of A/Cdre.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Evan Tatem POWELL ()

He entered the RAF College in 1936 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 18 Dec 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 18 Jan 1938.  He retired on 24 May 1938 in the rank of Plt Off.

 

Thomas PRESTON (33334) DFC and Bar

He entered the RAF College in 1936, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Athletics.

He was commissioned on 18 Dec 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 18 Jan 1938.  He retired on 11 May 1959 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Desmond Geoffrey STANLEY (33336)

He entered the RAF College in 1936 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 18 Dec 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 18 Jan 1938.  He was killed in action on 7 Dec 1940 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He was killed whilst flying in Wellington IC, R3220 of No 9 Sqn, which crashed near Ostend on a raid to Dusseldorf.  He is buried in Oostende New Communal Cemetery.

Michael Litchfield WATSON (33337)

He entered the RAF College in 1936 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 18 Dec 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 18 Jan 1938.  He was killed in action on 11 Jun 1941 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was killed whilst flying in Blenheim IV, Z6426 of No 82 Sqn, which crashed in the sea after being hit by flak from the ships it was attacking.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Anthony Louis Henry BARBER (33298)

He entered the RAF College in 1936, was a member of B Sqn.  He also represented the college in Athletics.

He was commissioned on 22 Dec 1937 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 18 Jan 1938.  He was killed in action on 22 Mar 1941 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He was killed whilst flying in Wellington IC, X3162 of No 57 Sqn, which crashed into the sea in the target area on a raid to Ostend.  He is buried in Oostende New Communal Cemetery.

Vivian REES (33335) DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1936 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 21 Jan 1938 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 1 Feb 1938.  He retired on 7 Aug 1972 in the rank of Wg Cdr.
