Cranwell Graduations 1939


The following cadets graduated from the RAF College at Cranwell on 29 July 1939.  The reviewing officer at the graduation parade was General Lord Gort VC, KCB, CBE, DSO, MVO (Chief of the Imperial General Staff).  This was the last peace-time passing out parade at Cranwell

Harold Derrick ATKINSON (33418) DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of B Sqn.  He also represented the college in Cricket and Soccer.

He was commissioned on 29 Jul 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Oct 1939.  He was killed in action on 25 Aug 1940 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was killed whilst flying Hurricane I, P3200 of No 213 Sqn, which was shot down near Portland.  He is buried in Market Weighton Cemetery.

John Sandes BARNWELL (33432)

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of C Sqn.  On graduating he was awarded the King's Medal, Abdy Gerrard Fellows Memorial Prize and the John Anthony Chance Memorial Prize.

He was commissioned on 29 Jul 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Oct 1939.  He was killed in action on 19 Jun 1940 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was killed whilst flying in Blenheim IF, L6636 of No 29 Sqn, which failed to return from a night patrol.  He is buried in Scopwick Church Burial Ground.

Clive Vernon BEADON (33419) DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of B Sqn.  He also represented the college in Rugby.

He was commissioned on 29 Jul 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Oct 1939.  He retired on 15 Apr 1966 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

William BERINGER (33451) AMBIM

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.  He also represented the college in Soccer.

He was commissioned on 29 Jul 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Oct 1939.  He retired on 30 Sep 1969 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

John Boys BOYS-STONES (33434)

He entered the RAF College in 1937 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 29 Jul 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Oct 1939.  He was killed in action on 7 Mar 1941 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was killed whilst flying in Maryland, AR706 of No 69 Sqn, which was shot down by Bf 109s on its return from a reconnaissance sortie to Taormina.  He is buried in Malta (Capuccini) Naval Cemetery.

John William CARMICHAEL (33421) DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Cross-Country, Boxing and Hockey.

He was commissioned on 29 Jul 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Oct 1939.  He was killed in action on 14 Jun 1944 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was killed whilst flying in Liberator V, BZ818 of No 53 Sqn, which failed to return from and anti-submarine and probably shot down by the u-boat it reported it was going to attack.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial

Philip Edward Austin CARR (33452)

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of C Sqn.  He also represented the college in Hockey and Squash.

He was commissioned on 29 Jul 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Oct 1939.  He retired on 9 Dec 1961 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

 

John CHILD (33435)

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Athletics and Cross-Country.

He was commissioned on 29 Jul 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Oct 1939.  He was killed in a flying accident on 3 Sep 1948 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was killed whilst flying in Spitfire FR Mk 14, TP240 of No 612 Sqn, which dived into the ground after flying into cu nim cloud during a formation flying practice.  He was out of current flying practice and had no instrument rating.  He is buried in Corstorphine Hill Cemetery, Edinburgh.

Philip Willsteed COOK (33453)

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Soccer.

He was commissioned on 29 Jul 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Oct 1939.  He retired on 7 Jul 1968 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the Central Flying School.

Derek Hugh Tremenheere DOWDING (33422)

He entered the RAF College in 1937 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 29 Jul 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Oct 1939.  He retired on 17 Nov 1958 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Michael Hilton FRANKLIN (33423)

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Shooting.

He was commissioned on 29 Jul 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Oct 1939.  He was killed in action on 9 Apr 1941 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was killed whilst flying in Blenheim IV, V6148 BX-G of No 86 Sqn, which was possibly shot down by an enemy fighter over the North Sea.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Peter Lee GORDON-DEAN (33436)

He entered the RAF College in 1937 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 29 Jul 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Oct 1939.  He was killed on active service on 4 Mar 1941 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was killed whilst flying in Defiant I, N1794 of No 151 Sqn, which broke up in the air near Stamford.  He is buried in Winslow (St Lawrence) Churchyard.

Christopher Ian Dunbar HALLIDAY (33424)

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Shooting.

He was commissioned on 29 Jul 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Oct 1939.  He was killed in action on 19 May 1940 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was possibly killed whilst flying in Lysander I, L4773; Lysander II, N1202 or Lysander II, N1290 of No 26 Sqn, which failed to return.  He is buried in Landreicies Communal Cemetery.

Geoffrey Fawconer HARDING (33438)

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of C Sqn.  He also represented the college in Shooting.

He was commissioned on 29 Jul 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Oct 1939.  He was killed in action on 10 May 1940 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was killed whilst flying in Blenheim I, L1405 of No 18 Sqn, which was lost on a reconnaissance sortie.  He is buried in the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery.

Robert Edward HARRIS (33449)

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Cricket.

He was commissioned on 29 Jul 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Oct 1939.  He was killed in action on 19 May 1940 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was killed whilst flying in Hurricane I, N2408 of No 17 Sqn, which was shot down near Le Cateau by Bf 109s.  He is buried in Noyelles-sur-Selle Communal Cemetery.

Richard Vivian HERBERT (33425)

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Hockey.

He was commissioned on 29 Jul 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Oct 1939.  He was killed in action on 13 Apr 1941 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was killed whilst flying in Blenheim I, L4819 of No 211 Sqn, which was shot down by fighters during a raid on Florina.  He was the son of Air Commodore Philip Lee William Herbert and is buried in Phaleron War Cemetery.

John Basil HOLGATE (33426) DFC, AFC

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Shooting.

He was commissioned on 29 Jul 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Oct 1939.  He retired on 1 Mar 1961 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College and the Central Flying School.

Bernard HOWE (33427)

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of C Sqn.  He also represented the college in Swimming.

He was commissioned on 29 Jul 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Oct 1939.  He was killed in action on 20 Apr 1941 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was probably killed whilst flying Whirlwind I, P6992 of No 263, which dived into the ground after the control cables were burnt through following an engine fire in the air.  He is buried in Wittering (All Saints) Churchyard.

Peter Arden HUGHES (33411) DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1937 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 29 Jul 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Oct 1939.  He retired on 11 Jun 1968 retaining the rank of A/Cdre.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College, the RAF Flying College and the Central Flying School.

Henry Stephen Penton HULTON (33428)

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.

He was commissioned on 29 Jul 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Oct 1939.  He was killed on active service on 21 Apr 1940 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was killed whilst flying Blenheim I, L1427 of No 18 Sqn, which crashed into a hill whilst flying in fog on a ferry flight and is buried in St Brelade Churchyard., Jersey.

Peter Adrian KIMPTON (33429)

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.

He was commissioned on 29 Jul 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Oct 1939.  He was killed in action on 27 Mar 1942 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He was killed whilst flying in Beaufort I, W6473 of No 32 OTU, which crashed on the approach to Rodeo, New Mexico following an engine failure.  He is buried in El Paso (Fort Bliss) National Cemetery.

Robert Bernard KNOWLES (33430)

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of C Sqn.  He also represented the college in Squash.

He was commissioned on 29 Jul 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Oct 1939.  He retired on 23 Feb 1942 in the rank of Flt Lt.

Michael Dillon LYNE (33431) CB, AFC and 2 Bars, AFRAeS

He entered the RAF College in 1937 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 29 Jul 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Oct 1939.  He retired on 10 Apr 1971 in the rank of AVM.

He was a graduate of the RAF Flying College.

Basil George MACE (33450)

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl, after being awarded a scholarship as an apprentice at Halton.  He also represented the college in Hockey and Fencing.

He was commissioned on 29 Jul 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Oct 1939.  He was killed on active service on 17 Mar 1941 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was killed whilst flying Blenheim IV, V5464 of No 86 Sqn, which collided with Z5808 of the same unit during a training sortie.  He is buried in Ringshall (St Catherine) Churchyard.

Richard Frewen MARTIN (33439) DFC and Bar, AFC

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of C Sqn.  On graduating he was awarded the R M Groves Memorial Prize.

He was commissioned on 29 Jul 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Oct 1939.  He retired on 1 Jul 1953 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was a graduate of the RAF Flying College and the Empire Test Pilots School.

John Hugh Keith PARVIN (33441)

He entered the RAF College in 1937 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 29 Jul 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Oct 1939.  He was killed in action on 27 Aug 1940 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was killed whilst flying in Blenheim IV, L9472 of No 18 Sqn, which failed to return from a raid on enemy airfields.  He is buried in Bergen-op-Zoom Canadian War Cemetery.

Vincent James PATTISON (33442)

He entered the RAF College in 1937 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 29 Jul 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Oct 1939.  He was killed in action on 6 Jul 1940 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was killed whilst flying Blenheim IV, P9650 of No 254 Sqn, which was shot down by fighters near Stavanger.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

John Eley PRESTON (33443) AFC

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Fencing.

He was commissioned on 29 Jul 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Oct 1939.  He died in service on 20 May 1959 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He died at Talyfan Ridge, Llanbedr, Caernarvonshire, His probate record states he was a retired AVM?

Henry Cartwright RANDALL (33444) DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of B Sqn.  He also represented the college in Athletics.

He was commissioned on 29 Jul 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Oct 1939.  He retired on 2 Sep 1965 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

James SEEDS (33445)

He entered the RAF College in 1937 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 29 Jul 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Oct 1939.  He was killed in action on 9 Jul 1940 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was killed whilst flying in Sunderland I, N6133 ZM-Y of No 201 Sqn, which was shot down over the North Sea.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Sir Thomas Neville STACK (33455) KCB, CVO, CBE, AFC, FRMetS, FBIM

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.  He also represented the college in Cricket and Squash.  On graduating he was awarded the Sword of Honour.

He was commissioned on 29 Jul 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Oct 1939.  He retired on 11 Feb 1978 in the rank of ACM.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College and the RAF Flying College.

James Mortimer TAYLOR (33446)

He entered the RAF College in 1937 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 29 Jul 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Oct 1939.  He retired on 24 Feb 1946 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He entered the RAF College in 1937, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Athletics, Cross Country and Hockey.

He was commissioned on 29 Jul 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Oct 1939.  He was killed in action on 6 Nov 1940 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was killed whilst flying in Hurricane I, V6814 of No 238 Sqn, which was shot down by a Bf 109 over Fareham.  He is buried in Gosport (Ann's Hill) Cemetery.

John David WILLIS (33447)

He entered the RAF College in 1937 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 29 Jul 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Oct 1939.  He was killed in action on 28 Aug 1942 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He was killed whilst flying in Wellington IC, T2545 of No 1 OADU, which was shot down off Rabat, Morocco on a flight from Bathurst to Gibraltar.  He is commemorated on the Malta Memorial.

John Edward Randell WOOD (33448)

He entered the RAF College in 1937 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 29 Jul 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Oct 1939.  He was killed in action on 8 Jul 1940 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was wounded whilst flying Hurricane I, N2384 of No 79 Sqn, managing to bale out but later died of his wounds.  He is buried in Hawkinge Cemetery.

Adrian BOUWENS (33420)

He entered the RAF College in 1937 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 9 Sep 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 3 Oct 1939.  He was killed in action on 18 May 1940 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was killed whilst flying Hudson I, N7400 of No 206 Sqn which filed to return from Hamburg.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

John Hubert Lempriere BLOUNT (33471) DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1938, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.

He was commissioned on 3 Oct 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Oct 1939.  He was killed in a flying accident on 24 Apr 1965 in the rank of A/Cdre.

He retired at his own request joining the Queen's household as the Captain of the Queen's Flight and was killed, together with three other members of the flight when the Whirlwind, in which he was travelling to Yeovilton, lost a rotor blade and crashed Brightwalton in Berkshire. .  He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College and the RAF Flying College.

George Keith Ross DRIMMIE (33472)

He entered the RAF College in 1938, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.

He was commissioned on 3 Oct 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Oct 1939.  He was killed in a flying accident on 29 Nov 1946 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was killed whilst flying in Mosquito PR Mk 34, RG199 of No 58 Sqn, which broke up over Pangbourne in Berkshire on recovering from a dive after control was lost whilst flying in a cu-nim cloud.  He was cremated at Oxford Crematorium

John Sinclair Bucknall JONES (33467)

He entered the RAF College in 1938 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 3 Oct 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Oct 1939.  He was killed in action on 11 Aug 1940 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was killed whilst flying Spitfire I, R6614 of No 152 Sqn which he abandoned of the Dorset coast after being hit by fire from a Bf 109 but did not survive; he is buried in Ste Marie Cemetery, Le Havre.

Cyril LIGHT (33479)

He entered the RAF College in 1938 and was a member of A Sqn , after being awarded a scholarship as an apprentice at Halton.

He was commissioned on 3 Oct 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Oct 1939.  He was killed in action on 21 May 1940 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was killed whilst flying in Blenheim IV, L9325 of No 18 Sqn, which was lost without trace on a reconnaissance mission.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

John Woffenden McKENZIE (33461)

He entered the RAF College in 1938 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 3 Oct 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Oct 1939.  He was killed in action on 11 Aug 1940 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was killed whilst flying Hurricane I, P3922 of No 111 Sqn, which was shot down off Margate.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Darrell Edward David MILSOM (33466)

He entered the RAF College in 1938, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.

He was commissioned on 3 Oct 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Oct 1939.  He was killed on active service on 29 Mar 1940 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was killed whilst flying in Wellington IC, T2505 WS-W of No 9 Sqn, which crashed near Antwerp on raid to Cologne.  He is buried in Schoonselhof Cemetery.

Patrick John Muriel NETTLETON (33483)

He entered the RAF College in 1938 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 3 Oct 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Oct 1939.  He was killed in action on 29 Mar 1940 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was killed whilst flying either Gladiator N5690 or N5688 of No 263 Sqn, which were lost in a collision.  He is buried in Bristol (Canford) Cemetery.

Desmond Ludlow PAYNE (33463)

He entered the RAF College in 1938 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 3 Oct 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer on probation which was gazetted on 27 Oct 1939.  He was killed on active service on 8 Jan 1940 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was killed whilst flying Blenheim IV, L4854 of No 2 School of Army Co-operation which crashed whilst low flying near Salisbury.  He is buried in Penton Mewsey (Holy Trinity) Churchyard.

Douglas Clayton SHEPLEY (33464)

He entered the RAF College in 1938 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 3 Oct 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer on probation which was gazetted on 27 Oct 1939.  He was killed in action on 12 Aug 1940 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was killed whilst flying in Spitfire I, K9999 of No 152 Sqn, which was shot down by a Ju 88 off the Isle of Wight.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

James Douglas STEUART RICHARDSON (33465) DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1938 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 3 Oct 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer on probation which was gazetted on 27 Oct 1939.  He was killed in action on 28 Dec 1940 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He was killed whilst flying Blenheim IVf, L9043 of No 53 Sqn, which crashed on take off from Thorney Island. He is buried in Tonbridge Cemetery.

Charles WARREN (33482) MBE, DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1938, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt, after being awarded a scholarship as an apprentice at Halton.

He was commissioned on 3 Oct 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer on probation which was gazetted on 27 Oct 1939.  He retired on 14 Feb 1957 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

 

Timothy Seddon WILDBLOOD (33478)

He entered the RAF College in 1938, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.

He was commissioned on 3 Oct 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer on probation which was gazetted on 27 Oct 1939.  He was killed in action on 25 Aug 1940 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was killed whilst flying Spitfire I, R6994 of No 152 Sqn, which was shot down near Portland by fighters.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

John Collinsori ALEXANDER (33456)

He entered the RAF College in 1938, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.

He was commissioned on 8 Oct 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer on probation which was gazetted on 27 Oct 1939.  He was killed in action on 21 Oct 1941 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He was killed whilst flying in Lerwick, L7248 of the MAEE, which crashed into a hill at Faslane when it was unable to maintain height following an engine failure.  He is buried in Helensburgh Cemetery.

Thomas Roper BURNE (33457) DSO, AFC

He entered the RAF College in 1938 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 8 Oct 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Oct 1939.  He retired on 27 Jan 1970 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

John Stewart CAMERON (33458)

He entered the RAF College in 1938 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 8 Oct 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Oct 1939.  He was killed in action on 26 May 1940 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was flying in Wellington IC, L7793 of No 37 Sqn, which force landed near Ostend on 26 May 1940.  It is assumed he was killed whilst being evacuated and is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

He was killed whilst flying in Hampden I, P4390 of No 61 Sqn, which was shot down by flak near Nordhorn.  He is buried in the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery.

He was commissioned on 8 Oct 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 27 Oct 1939.  He was killed in action on 25 Apr 1941 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was killed whilst flying in Sunderland I, T9048 of No 228 Sqn, which crashed in a night landing off the Greek coast whilst attempting to pick up RAF personnel during the evacuation from Greece.  He is commemorated on the Alamein Memorial.

Eric Walwyn PADFIELD (33480)

He entered the RAF College in 1938 and was a member of C Sqn , after being awarded a scholarship as an apprentice at Halton.

He was commissioned on 8 Oct 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer on probation which was gazetted on 27 Oct 1939.  He was killed on active service on 21 Mar 1941 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was killed whilst flying in Anson, K6248 of No 2 School of Air Navigation, which crashed at Rednal near Oswestry when he collided with an oak tree during a practice forced landing.  He is buried in Byley (St John) Churchyard.

Robert James Sealer PARSONS (33462)

He entered the RAF College in 1938 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 8 Oct 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer on probation which was gazetted on 27 Oct 1939.  He was killed in action on 28 Sep 1942 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was killed whilst flying in Wellington III Z1663 KO-J of No 115 Sqn, which was shot down by a Fw 190 into the Ijsselmeer on a raid to the Dortmund-Ems Canal.  He is buried in Amsterdam New Eastern Cemetery.

He was commissioned on 8 Oct 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer on probation which was gazetted on 27 Oct 1939.  He was killed in action on 2 Sep 1940 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was killed whilst flying in Sunderland I, T9043 of No 210 Sqn, which failed to return from a convoy patrol.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Arthur Maxwell RUSTON (33475) CBE, DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1938 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 8 Oct 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer on probation which was gazetted on 27 Oct 1939.  He retired on 2 Apr 1970 in the rank of A/Cdre.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College and the College of Air Warfare.

John Geoffrey Carr SALMOND (33476)

He was commissioned on 8 Oct 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer on probation which was gazetted on 27 Oct 1939.  He was killed in action on 18 Apr 1940 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was lost without a trace whilst flying Wellington IA, P9234 of No 99 Sqn and is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.  He was the son of Air Chief Marshal Sir Geoffrey Salmond, KCB, KCMG, DSO.

Donald Wilfrid STEVENTON (33477) DSO, DFC and Bar

He entered the RAF College in 1938, was a member of ? Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.

He was commissioned on 8 Oct 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer on probation which was gazetted on 27 Oct 1939.  He was killed in a flying accident on 18 Sep 1951 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was flying in Vampire FB Mk 5, VZ237 of the RAF Flying College, which rolled and dived into the ground as it attempted an emergency landing at Strubby following an engine failure on take off, he baled out but his parachute failed to deploy fully and he was killed when he hit the roof of a house.  He is buried in South Kyme Cemetery, Lincoln.

David Leslie WINGATE (33470)

He entered the RAF College in 1938, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.

He was commissioned on 8 Oct 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer on probation which was gazetted on 27 Oct 1939.  He was killed in action on 22 Aug 1940 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was killed whilst flying in Spitfire I of No 144 Sqn, which was lost without trace on a raid to the Mitteland Canal.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

He was killed whilst flying in Liberator V, BZ753 of No 53 Sqn, which was shot down over the Bay of Biscay by Ju 88s.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

He died from injuries probably sustained whilst flying Magister I, R1827 of No 222 Sqn which flew into the ground near Ashwell in Hertfordshire the previous day, he is buried in Whittlesford (SS Mary and Andrew) Churchyard.

He was killed whilst flying in Meteor F Mk 8, WF695 of RAF Horsham St Faith, which was hit by another aircraft during a formation practice, severing the tail of WF695 which dived into the ground.  He is buried in Old Catton Churchyard

Bernard CLEGG (33536) DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1939 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 23 Dec 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1940.  He was killed on active service on 6 Jun 1943 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He was killed whilst flying in Spitfire IV, AA791 or Spitfire XIII, BM350 of No 542 Sqn, which collided with each other near Nettlebed in Oxfordshire.  He was cremated at  Leeds (Lawns Wood) Crematorium.

Ralph Henry CLIFFORD (33537)

He entered the RAF College in 1939 and was a member of B Sqn , after being awarded a scholarship as an apprentice at Halton.

He was commissioned on 23 Dec 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1940.  He was killed in action on 19 May 1940 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was possibly killed whilst flying in Lysander I, L4773; Lysander II, N1202 or Lysander II, N1290 of No 26 Sqn, which failed to return.  He is buried in Landreicies Communal Cemetery.

James Henderson DEAS (33539)

He entered the RAF College in 1939 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 23 Dec 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1940.  He was killed in action on 27 May 1940 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was possibly killed whilst flying in either Lysanders L4782, L6864 or N1243 all of No 26 Sqn, which were reported missing this day.  He is buried in Calais Southern Cemetery.

Douglas David HAIG (33540) DSO, DFC and Bar

He entered the RAF College in 1939 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 23 Dec 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1940.  He retired on 20 Sep 1964 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the RAF Flying College.

John Fisher HATTON (33541)

He entered the RAF College in 1939 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 23 Dec 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1940.  He retired on 7 Jul 1967 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was a graduate of the Central Flying School.

Robert Leslie HICKS (33542)

He entered the RAF College in 1939 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 23 Dec 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1940.  He was killed in action on 6 Apr 1941 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was killed whilst flying in Beaufort, N1147 of No 22 Sqn, which was shot down by Bf 110s during a shipping strike near the Ile de Batz.  He is buried in Pornic War Cemetery.

Sir Peter de Lacey Le CHEMINANT (33544) GBE, KCB, DFC and Bar

He entered the RAF College in 1939 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 23 Dec 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1940.  He retired on 27 Aug 1979 in the rank of ACM.

He was a graduate of the Joint Services Staff College and the RAF Staff College.

Archibald Duncan LIVINGSTONE (33514)

He entered the RAF College in 1939 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 23 Dec 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1940.  He was killed in action on 30 Apr 1942 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He was possibly killed whilst flying in Beaufort II, AW271 of the CCDU, which spun into the ground near Ballykelly.  He is buried in Tamlaght Finlagan Church of Ireland Churchyard.

Dugald Thomas Moore LUMSDEN (33545) MBE

He entered the RAF College in 1939 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 23 Dec 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1940.  He retired on 16 May 1964 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College, the RAF Flying College and the Central Flying School.

Ruthven Arnold MACFARLANE (33546)

He entered the RAF College in 1939 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 23 Dec 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1940.  He was killed in action on 18 Sep 1940 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was killed whilst flying Beaufort I, L4508 AO- K of No 22 Sqn, during a night torpedo attack on the outer harbour at Cherbourg. He is buried in Bayeux War Cemetery.

Samuel Anthony Compton SIBLEY (33549)

He entered the RAF College in 1939 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 23 Dec 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer on probation which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1940.  He was killed in action on 15 May 1940 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was shot down near Brussels whilst flying Hurricane I, L1941 of No 504 Sqn which shot down near Brussels by flak.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial

Timothy Norman SMYTH (33550)

He entered the RAF College in 1939 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 23 Dec 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer on probation which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1940.  He died in service on 27 Aug 1940 in the rank of Plt Off.

He died from injuries sustained whilst possibly flying in Lysander II, N1267 of No 26 Sqn, which crashed at Nettlestead in Kent when it stalled during a turn.  He is buried in Wombourne (St Benedict) Churchyard.

Peter Cecil THOMAS (33552)

He entered the RAF College in 1939 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 23 Dec 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer on probation which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1940.  He was killed in action on 7 May 1941 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He was killed whilst flying in Catalina I, AH536 of No 240 Sqn, which crashed and sank on landing on Lough Erne at night.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Rowland VEAL (33553)

He entered the RAF College in 1939 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 23 Dec 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer on probation which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1940.  He retired on 29 May 1970 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

 

Timothy Ashmead VIGORS (33554) DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1939 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 23 Dec 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer on probation which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1940.  He retired on 8 Nov 1946 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

 

Albert Edmund WHITWORTH (33555)

He entered the RAF College in 1939 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 23 Dec 1939 in the rank of Pilot Officer on probation which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1940.  He was killed in action on 21 Mar 1941 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was killed whilst flying in Catalina II, AM265 BN-A of No 240 Sqn, which crashed near Kinlough in Eire.  He is buried in Irvinestown Church of Ireland Churchyard.
