Air Ministry Experimental Stations


Throughout the early development of radar the title adopted to describe units employing the equipment was 'Air Ministry Experimental Station" (AMES), which was intended to disguise the true purpose of the equipment.  This system continued into and throughout World War 2 and eventually covered a wide range of units operating a variety of equipment, such as search radars, GEE, OBOE, GEE-H.  Those units designated as AMES are shown below with brief histories, where available.

No 1 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in July 1944 probably in ? as a Light Warning Set station and disbanded in March 1945.


No 1 (Holding) Air Ministry Experimental

This unit was formed in July 1942 in Ceylon and became No 5009 Holding Air Ministry Experimental Station in August 1942.


No 2 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in August 1942 probably in Kodipotumalai as a CD/CHL station, under the control of No 222 Group and became No 5010 Air Ministry Experimental Station in November 1942.

It was reformed in November 1942 at an unknown location and disbanded in August 1945.


No 3 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in August 1940 at Henlow.  It moved to Haifa, Palestine in November 1940 and became No 503 Air Ministry Experimental Station in July 1941.


No 4 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in June 1942 at Bona Vista, Galle in Ceylon.  It was moved to Horton Plains, Ceylon in November, where it and became No 201 Air Ministry Experimental Station in April 1943.


No 6 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in August 1940 at Henlow.  It moved to Ras Marshag, Aden in November 1940, where it became No 506 Air Ministry Experimental Station in July 1941.


No 7 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in November 1940 at Uxbridge as a Type 5 COL station and moved to Gibraltar coming under No 60 Group and HQ Coastal Command.


No 8 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in November 1940 at Uxbridge as a Type 5 COL station.  It moved to Haifa, Palestine in December 1940 in No 256 (Signals) Wing and then to Aboukir, Egypt, where it and became No 508 Air Ministry Experimental Station in June 1941.


No 9 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in November 1940 at Uxbridge as a Type 5 COL station and moved to Alexandria in No 256 (Signals) Wing.


No 10 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in November 1940 at Uxbridge as a Type 5 COL station and moved to the Middle East in No 256 (Signals) Wing.


No 11 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in November 1940 at Uxbridge as a Type 5 COL station and moved to Singapore.


No 12 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in November 1940 at Uxbridge as a Type 5 COL station and moved to Singapore.


No 13 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in November 1940 at Uxbridge as a Type 5 COL station and moved to Freetown, Sierra Leone, before moving to Egypt in mid-1941.


No 14 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in November 1940 at Uxbridge as a Type 5 COL station and moved to Freetown, Sierra Leone before moving to Egypt in mid-1941.


No 17 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in mid 1941 in the UK as a Type 5 COL station for service with Far East Command.


No 18 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in mid 1941 in the UK as a Type 5 COL station for service with Far East Command.


No 19 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in mid 1941 in the UK as a Type 5 COL station for service with Middle East Command.


No 20 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in mid 1941 in the UK as a Type 5 COL station for service with Middle East Command.


No 70 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in January 1951 at Gibraltar and disbanded in June 1951.


No 105 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in December 1944 probably in the UK, under the control of 72 Wing.  It was based at Rosee, France in December 1944 and then La Capelle, France in June 1945, where it disbanded in January 1947.


No 106 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in December 1944 probably in the UK, under the control of 72 Wing.  It was based at Fulda, Germany in April 1945, Mont Ventoux, France in July and finally Carpentras Vaucluse, France, where it disbanded in January 1947.


No 107 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in May 1945 probably at Trunderup Fyn, Denmark.  It moved to Cap Corse, Corsica in January 1946, where it disbanded in May 1946.


No 108 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in March 1945 probably at St Avold, France.  It moved to Lodeve, France in July, where it disbanded in June 1947.


No 109 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in October 1944 probably in the UK, under the control of No 72 Wing.  It moved to Minglesberg, Holland in November, Coesfeld, Germany in May 1945 and finally to Bourgneuf, France in February 1946, where it disbanded in November 1946.


No 110 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in November 1944 probably in the UK.  It was based at various locations in Holland and Germany and disbanded in November 1945.


No 120 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in December 1944 probably in the UK.  It moved to Iburg, Germany in April 1945 and then to Ennabeuren/Blaubeuren, Germany in August, where it disbanded in May 1946.


No 121 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in January 1945 probably in the UK.  It moved to Xhoris, Belgium in May 1945 and then Mezieres sur Issoire, France in January 1946, where it disbanded in November 1946.


No 122 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in January 1945 probably in the UK.  It moved to Ligny en Barrois, France in July, where it disbanded in January 1947.


No 123 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in January 1945 probably in the UK.  It was based at various locations in France, Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg and Denmark and disbanded in December 1945.


No 124 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in December 1944 at Cardington.  It moved to Aix-en-Othe, France in July 1945 and disbanded in January 1947.


No 125 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in December 1944 at Cardington.  It moved to the Isle of Ponza, Italy in August 1945 and disbanded in April 1946.


No 126 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in January 1945 probably in the Middle East.  It was based at Kelibia, Tunisia in December but was at El Aouina, Tunisia in May 1946, where it disbanded in June 1946.


No 127 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in January 1945 probably at Nijnsel, Holland.  It moved to Mende, France in June 1945, where it disbanded in June 1947.


No 128 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in December 1944 at Renscombe Down.  It moved to the Island of Ischia, Italy in February 1946 and disbanded in May 1946.


No 129 Air Ministry Experimental Station                                                

This unit was formed in October 1944 at Renscombe Down.  It moved to Croix, France in February 1945, Louvain, France in March, Fulda, Germany in July and finally to Langeais, France in February 1946, where it disbanded in November 1946.


No 130 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in February 1945 probably at St Avold, France.  It moved to Commercy, France in April, Fulda, Germany in May, Bizerta, Tunisia in January 1946 and finally to El Aouina, Tunisia in May, where it disbanded in June 1946.


No 131 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in February 1945 probably in the UK.  It was based at Arlon, Belgium in February 1945, Ober Reifenberg, Germany in April and finally Zinzenzell, Germany in October, where it disbanded in May 1946.


No 132 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in January 1945 at Renscombe Down.  It moved to Mons, Belgium in February, Remiremont, France in March, Wilsede, Germany in May, Lyngvig, Denmark in June and finally to San Gregorio, Italy in September, where it disbanded in May 1946.


No 133 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in February 1945 at Biggin Hill.  It moved to Canewdon in April, Cardington, later in the month and finally to Lodeve, France in June, where it disbanded in August 1945.


No 134 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in March 1945 at UK.  It was based at various UK locations before moving to Catania, Sicily in October and then to Erice, Sicily in December, where it  disbanded in May 1946.


No 136 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in May 1945 at Cardington.  It moved to Monastir, Tunisia in December 1945 and finally to El Aouina, Tunisia in May 1946, where it disbanded in June 1946.


No 137 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in August 1944 at Malvern.  It moved to Sywell in December and Stoke Holy Cross in April 1945, where it disbanded in August 1945.


No 138 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in April 1945 at Canewdon and disbanded in October 1945.


No 151 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in August 1945 probably in the Middle East, moving almost immediately to Ascoli, Italy in August 1945 disbanded in May 1946.


No 156 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in December 1945 probably at Muranager, India and disbanded in April 1946.


No 201 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a Transportable Radio Unit for service with 'X' Force in Norway under the control of No 21 (RDF) Wing and on its return it was retained to form new mobile RDF


No 202 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a Transportable Radio Unit for service with 'X' Force in Norway under the control of No 21 (RDF) Wing and on its return it was retained to form new mobile RDF, assigned to the Southern Mobile Radio Unit Pool at RAF Halton, when not in use on 13 June 1940.


No 204 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a MRU in June 1940 at Amriya.  It moved to El Daba, Egypt later that month and to Damietta, Egypt in March 1941, from where it was due to move to Malta but was still there in July 1942, when it was planned to be replaced by No 402 AMES.  It disbanded in October 1943.


No 205 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a MRU in December 1940, probably at Aboukir and was converted to a TRU by July 1942.  It had come under the control of AHQ Eastern Mediterranean by December 1944 and disbanded in February 1945.


No 206 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a Transportable Radio Unit for service with 'X' Force in Norway under the control of No 21 (RDF) Wing and on its return it was retained to form new mobile RDF, assigned to the Southern Mobile Radio Unit Pool at RAF Halton, when not in use on 13 June 1940.


No 207 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a Transportable Radio Unit for service with 'X' Force in Norway under the control of No 21 (RDF) Wing and on its return it was retained to form new mobile RDF, assigned to the Southern Mobile Radio Unit Pool at RAF Halton, when not in use on 13 June 1940.

It probably moved to the Middle East at Aboukir and became No 205 Air Ministry Experimental Station in December 1940.


No 208 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a MRU before 13 June 1940 when it was assigned to the Southern Mobile Radio Unit Pool at RAF Halton, when not in use


No 209 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a MRU before 13 June 1940 when it was assigned to the Southern Mobile Radio Unit Pool at RAF Halton, when not in use.

In November 1941 the unit was in transit or awaiting despatch to the Middle East.  In January 1942 it was decided to send it to Colombo, Ceylon and it became operational in November 1942 at Galle, disbanding in November 1943, although it was still being shown as an unallocated unit in January 1944, so this might be a retrospective date.


No 210 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a MRU before 13 June 1940 when it was assigned to the Southern Mobile Radio Unit Pool at RAF Halton, when not in use.  In January 1942 it was decided to send it to Trincomalee, Ceylon, after which its fate is uncertain

This unit was reformed on 17 April 1943 as a MRU station at Samader Hill, Cox's Bazaar, under the control of No 182 Wing.  It was transferred to No 224 Group by December 1944 and disbanded in June 1945.


No 211 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a MRU before 13 June 1940 when it was assigned to the Southern Mobile Radio Unit Pool at RAF Halton, when not in use.

Its formation was announced in January 1942 for service at Madras India, and this took place in July 1942 in India as a MRU, but doesn't appear to have become operational until after September 1943.  By January 1944 it was located at Khulna under the control of No 180 Wing and disbanded in August 1945.


No 212 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a MRU before 13 June 1940 when it was assigned to the Southern Mobile Radio Unit Pool at RAF Halton, when not in use

In November 1941 it was in transit or awaiting despatch to the Middle East, but no further details have been found.


No 213 Air Ministry Experimental Station

A formation date as a MRU has not yet found but on 13 June 1940, prior to formation it was assigned to the Southern Mobile Radio Unit Pool at RAF Halton, when not in use.


No 214 Air Ministry Experimental Station

A formation date as a MRU has not yet found but on 13 June 1940, prior to formation it was assigned to the Southern Mobile Radio Unit Pool at RAF Halton, when not in use.

In November 1941 it was in transit or awaiting despatch to the Middle East, from the UK.  It became operational in July 1942 as a MRU and was based at various North African locations up to October 1943, then moved to Viesta, Italy in November, under the control of No 242 Group, Desert Air Force in the Foggia Sector. Its final move was to Benedetto del Tronto, Italy in June 1944, where it disbanded in November 1944.


No 215 Air Ministry Experimental Station

A formation date as a MRU has not yet found but on 13 June 1940, prior to formation it was assigned to the Southern Mobile Radio Unit Pool at RAF Halton, when not in use.

In November 1941 it was in transit or awaiting despatch to the Middle East, from the UK.  It became operational in November 1942 at Bahnasa, Egypt, moving to Benghazi, Libya later that month. The unit became non-operational in January 1944 and disbanded in January 1944.


No 216 Air Ministry Experimental Station

On 13 June 1940, prior to formation it was assigned to the Southern Mobile Radio Unit Pool at RAF Halton, when not in use.

It was eventually was formed in August 1940 at Uxbridge, moving to the Middle East in November 1940 in No 256 (Signals) Wing.  On arrival it moved to Ancroma on 28 January 1941, working with No 258 Wing, Sidi Barrani, Libya on 16 February before moving to Sollum in April, Mersa Matruh in early May and then to Tripoli, Syria in July 1942.  In June 1943 it moved to Monastir, Tunisia, having been placed under the administrative control of No 24 Wing in March and finally to Alma Marine, Algeria, where it came under the control of No 338 Wing on 11 November 1943 until it disbanded in August 1944.

No 218 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a MRU on a 'number only' basis before 13 June 1940, when it was assigned to the Northern Mobile Radio Unit Pool at RAF Sealand, when not in use

Eventually forming as a TRU probably at Uxbrisge in August 1940 for service in the Middle East and by January 1941 it at Lakoni, Mombasa, Kenya in No 256 (Signals) Wing, later coming under the control of AHQ Eastern Mediterranean.  It moved to Aboukir, Egypt in May, Myrtou, Cyprus in July and finally to Morphou, Cyprus in October 1941, where it disbanded in November 1944.


No 219 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a MRU on a 'number only' basis before 13 June 1940 when it was assigned to the Northern Mobile Radio Unit Pool at RAF Sealand, when not in use

Moving to Uxbridge in August 1940 it was despatched to the Middle East, initially to Ikingi Maryut in No 256 (Signals) Wing.  It moved to El Gamil, Port Said, Egypt in January 1941 and Helwan, Egypt in March 1944, where it disbanded in April 1944.


No 220 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a MRU on a 'number only' basis before 13 June 1940 when it was assigned to the Northern Mobile Radio Unit Pool at RAF Sealand, when not in use

It eventually formed as a TRU in August 1940 at Uxbridge and had arrived in Egypt by 21 October to join No 256 (Signals) Wing to await transport to Aden, where it arrived in January 1941.  It moved to Heraklion, Crete in March, Abu Haggag, Egpyt in November, El Hammam in July 1942 and finally Tobruk in November 1942, having been transferred to AHQ Eastern Mediterranean before it disbanded in November 1944.


No 221 Air Ministry Experimental Station                                                

This unit was formed as a MRU on a 'number only' basis before 13 June 1940 when it was assigned to the Northern Mobile Radio Unit Pool at RAF Sealand, when not in use

It eventually formed as a TRU at Uxbridge in August 1940 from where it was despatched to Athens, Greece, in No 256 (Signals) Wing, in November 1940, Araxos in December, Gebel Quatrani, Egypt in May 1941, where it was planned to be replaced by No 403 AMES, and finally Apollonia, Libya in January 1943, having been transferred to AHQ Eastern Mediterranean by December 1944 and disbanded in February 1945.


No 222 Air Ministry Experimental Station

A formation date as a MRU has not yet found but on 13 June 1940, prior to formation it was assigned to the Northern Mobile Radio Unit Pool at RAF Sealand, when not in use.


No 223 Air Ministry Experimental Station

On 13 June 1940, prior to formation it was assigned to the Northern Mobile Radio Unit Pool at RAF Sealand, when not in use.  It commenced forming as a MRU in July 1940 for deployment to Mariners Hill, Edenbridge, Kent, parented by RAF Kenley


No 224 Air Ministry Experimental Station

A formation date as a MRU has not yet found but on 13 June 1940, prior to formation it was assigned to the Northern Mobile Radio Unit Pool at RAF Sealand, when not in use.

This unit was formed in November 1942 in India as a MRU, but doesn't appear to have become operational until after September 1943.  By January 1944 it was located at Bhadrack under the control of No 180 Wing and disbanded in January 1945.


No 225 Holding Air Ministry Experimental Station

A formation date as a MRU has not yet found but on 13 June 1940, prior to formation it was assigned to the Northern Mobile Radio Unit Pool at RAF Sealand, when not in use.

It began re-equipping in June 1941 for service in the Middle East and became operational as a MRU on 28 November 1942 at Nellore, India in No 225 Group and disbanded in January 1945.


No 226 Air Ministry Experimental Station

A formation date as a MRU has not yet found but on 13 June 1940, prior to formation it was assigned to the Northern Mobile Radio Unit Pool at RAF Sealand, when not in use.  Its fate is unknown

This unit was reformed as a MRU in September 1942 at Renscombe Down.  It moved to Djidjelli, Algeria in February 1942 and disbanded in August 1942, although it may have still been in existence as a non-operational unit in January 1943, being disbanded after August 1944.


No 227 Air Ministry Experimental Station

A formation date as a MRU has not yet found but on 13 June 1940, prior to formation it was assigned to the Northern Mobile Radio Unit Pool at RAF Sealand, when not in use.  Its fate is unknown

This unit appears to have been reformed prior to January 1944, when it is shown as being unallocated at No 3 Base Signals Units but it may have disbanded before becoming operational.


No 228 Air Ministry Experimental Station

A formation date as a MRU has not yet found but on 13 June 1940, prior to formation it was assigned to the Northern Mobile Radio Unit Pool at RAF Sealand, when not in use.

This unit was reformed as a MRU station at Ongale on 5 February 1943 in No 225 Group, although it may have begun to form in Egypt earlier.  It had been placed in Care & Maintenance by January 1944 and disbanded in 1944.


No 229 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was shown as awaiting despatch to the Middle East, presumably from the UK, in November 1941 but no further details have so far been found.


No 230 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in June 1942 at Cairo.  It moved to Aleppo, Syria in January 1944 and disbanded after this date.


No 231 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was shown as awaiting despatch to the Middle East, presumably from the UK in November 1941 but no further details have so far been found.


No 232 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was shown as awaiting despatch to the Middle East, from the UK, in November 1941, probably becoming operation in June 1942 at Cairo.  It moved to Aleppo, Syria in January 1944, Helwan, Egypt in April and then to Cardito, Italy in June, was transferred to MAAF by December 1944 and disbanded in November 1944.


No 233 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in the UK and by May 1942 was, under the control of AHQ Malta.  It was based at Pantelleria, Italy in July 1943, Taranto, Italy in October, Crotone, Italy in December and Barletta, Italy in February 1944, where it disbanded in January 1945.


No 235 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in 1940 in the UK and was despatched to the Middle East to join No 256 (Signals) Wing.  In January 1941 it began working with No 258 Wing at Sollum, moving to Tobruk on 28 January 1941 and disbanded in May 1942.


No 236 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a TRU in August 1940 at Uxbridge for service in Palestine to be parented by RAF Ramlah.  It arrived at Mount Carmel, Haifa in October 1940.  In July 1942 it was planned to be replaced by No 407 AMES and disbanded in August 1944.


No 237 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was shown as awaiting despatch to the Middle East, from the UK in November 1941, probably arriving at Aboukir in January 1942.  It moved to Paphos, Cyprus in February 1942 and disbanded in October 1944.


No 239 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in the UK in late 1941 and by August 1942 was in Egypt, under the control of MAAF.  It was based at El Arish, Egypt in February 1943, Helwan in December and finally Aleppo in Syria from January 1944.  By 1 March 1945 it was non-operational under the control of No 1 MORU, DAF at Mondolfo, but a disbandment date as not yet been located.


No 240 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a TRU in August 1941 probably in Aden.  It was based at Amman Khal in Aden and disbanded in January 1943.


No 241 Air Ministry Experimental Station                                                

This unit was formed as an un-numbered TRU in June 1939 at Malta and was located at Dingli, to provide 24-hour coverage, being redesignated No 241 AMES on 1 July 1940.  In July 1942 it moved to Ghar Lapsi before disbanding in August 1944.


No 242 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a TRU in May 1940 at Uxbridge, before being sent to Malta, where it arrived on 26 June 1940.  Located at Dingli, together with No 241 AMES, it provided 24-hour coverage.  It probably remained until moving to various locations in Italy commencing from January 1945 and disbanded in May 1945.


No 243 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in June 1940 at Uxbridge.  It possibly served at Mersing in December 1941 and then at Tuas on Singapore Island before it officially disbanded in August 1942.


No 244 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a TRU in November 1940 at Uxbridge, sailing for West Africa on 10 March 1941.  It commenced reforming in Freetown, Sierra Leone in May 1941, administered by No 95 Squadron, later moving to Aboukir, Egypt, where it became the Air Ministry Experimental Station, Reserve Pool in July 1943.


No 247 Air Ministry Experimental Station

Its formation was announced in January 1942 for service in at Calcutta, India, and this took place on 13 October 1942 at Elliotganj as a MRU station, under the control of No 182 Wing.  It moved to Comilla in January 1943, Gram-Raipur, Elliotganj in February 1943 and Ramree Island in February 1945 having been transferred to No 224 Group by December 1944 and disbanded in August 1945.


No 248 Air Ministry Experimental Station

Its formation was announced in January 1942 for service at Calcutta, India, and this took place on 16 August 1942 at Kharagpur as a MRU, under the control of No 224 Group.  By January 1944 it was located at Egra I under the control of No 180 Wing and disbanded in May 1945.


No 249 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was shown as awaiting despatch to the Middle East, from the UK in November 1941 but possibly did not become operational until January 1943 probably at Hertzlia, Palestine and disbanded in September 1944.


No 250 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in November 1940 probably in Uxbridge as a MRU station.  It moved to Singapore in June 1941 and then to Tanah Merah Besar where it became operational on 8 December and disbanded in December 1944.


No 251 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a MRU at Uxbridge in July 1940 for service in the Middle East as part of No 256 Signals Wing.  By March 1941, it was operational at Port Sudan.  By November 1941 it was at Wadi Natrun, where in July 1942 it was planned to be replaced by No 404 AMES.  It moved to Helwan, Egypt in January 1944, where it disbanded in April 1944.


No 252 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a MRU in July 1940 at Uxbridge for service in the Middle East as part of No 256 Signals Wing.  It moved to Sidi Barakat, Egypt in September 1940, Aroni, Suda Bay, Crete in January 1941, although its its intended location was Maleme.  Following the invasion of Crete it returned to Aboukir, Egypt in June.  By November 1941 it was at Hurghada, finally moving to Sorman, Libya in March 1943, where it disbanded in October 1943.


No 253 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a MRU in November 1940 at Uxbridge.  It left the UK on 18 January 1941 for Khartoum, where it joined No 256 (Signals) Wing but had moved to Baltim, Egypt by at least November 1941, was transferred to AHQ Eastern Mediterranean by December 1944 and disbanded in March 1945.


No 254 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a MRU in the UK and departed for the Middle East on 18 January 1941, where it joined No 256 (Signals) WingIt was originally intended for service at Heraklion in Crete, under the control of No 183 Wing but was based at El Arish, Egypt in May.  It later moved to Abu Zenima, Egypt in October and finally Galle, Ceylon from March 1942 until transferring to No 290 Holding AMES in November.  It appears to have remained here as an unallocated unit until at least January 1944, after which it disbanded.


No 255 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a MRU in September 1941 in the UK, leaving for the Middle East on 18 February 1941, where it joined No 256 (Signals) Wing.  It arrived at Aboukir around 30 April, from where it was planned to replace No 204 MRU but moved to Limassol, Cyprus in September 1941, where it was transferred to AHQ Eastern Mediterranean by December 1944 and disbanded in December 1944.


No 256 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a MRU in the UK, leaving on 18 February 1941 for service in West Africa, where it joined No 256 (Signals) Wing.  However, it appears to have been diverted to Egypt en-route and arrived at Aboukir around 30 April 1941 and by August was due to replace No 205 MRU.  It moved to Banadir, Iraq in October 1941, then to Tanuma around July 1942.  Further moves followed to Helwan in May 1943, Sousse, Tunisia in July, Brolo, Sicily in September and finally to St Felice Circeo, Italy in November, where it operated under the control of the 62nd Fighter Wing USAAF in the Naples Sector.  By 1 March 1945 it was under the control of No 335 Wing and was located at Varcature L'Patria, where it probably disbanded in May 1945.


No 257 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a MRU in December 1940 at Uxbridge, leaving the UK on 21 February 1941, where it joined No 256 (Signals) Wing.  Arriving around 30 April, it moved to El Dhaba, Egypt in May 1941, to Athlit in July 1942A then to Abu Haggag, Egypt in March 1944, where it disbanded in September 1944.


No 258 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This was originally formed as a MRU in the UK in late 1940/early 1941, leaving for the Middle East on 21 February 1941, where it joined No 256 (Signals) Wing.  Arriving in the Middle East around 30 April, it had originally been intended to replace No 251 MRU at Port Sudan but whether it did is not known at present and was awaiting movement elsewhere in November 1941, ceasing to operate in the Middle East from 13 February 1942 after which it was transferred to Burma.

It either relocated or reformed on 25 June 1942 probably at Mathurapur as a MRU, under the control of No 221 Group.  By January 1944 it was under the control of No 180 Wing and disbanded in July 1945.


No 259 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a MRU in December 1940 in the UK, leaving the UK on 21 February 1941, where it joined No 256 (Signals) Wing.  Arriving around 30 April, it was planned to replace No 252 MRU and operated at Bir El Abd, Egypt.  In July 1942 it had been converted to a TRU, later coming under the control of AHQ Eastern Mediterranean and disbanded in November 1944.


No 260 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a MRU in late 1940/early 1941 in the UK, leaving for the Middle East on 21 February 1941, where it joined No 256 (Signals) Wing.  Arriving around 30 April, it was intended for the Burg el Arab area and was later based at Amriya, Egypt in June, Sidi Bishr, Egypt in December, Fayoum Road, Egypt in August 1942, "Charing Cross" near Mersa Matruh in March 1943 and finally to Helwan in January 1944, where it disbanded in April 1944.


No 261 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a MRU in the UK in late 1940/early 1941, intended for service in the Fuka area of Egypt, where it joined No 256 (Signals) Wing.  It probably arrived in June 1941, where it was located at Tel-el-Kebir.  It moved to Helwan, Egypt in January 1944, where it disbanded in April 1944.


No 262 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a MRU in the UK in late 1940/early 1941, intended for service at Sidi Barrani, where it joined No 256 (Signals) Wing.  It probably arrived in the Middle East in July 1941 at Aboukir.  It moved to Wadi Gindali, Egypt later the same month and disbanded in September 1943.


No 263 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a MRU in the UK in January 1941, intended for service as a Command Reserve in the Middle East, where it joined No 256 (Signals) Wing, probably arriving in July.  It was based at Sidi Barrani, Egypt in August, Almaza, Egypt in June 1942, Yibna, Palestine in August, Gaza, Palestine in June 1943, Aleppo, Syria in January 1944 and Benghazi, Cyrenaica, Libya in March but by July 1944 was at Helwan, where it disbanded in July 1944.


No 264 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a MRU in the UK in January 1941, intended for service as a Command Reserve in the Middle East, where it joined No 256 (Signals) Wing, probably arriving in August.  It was based at Shaibah, Iraq in October, but by May 1942 was located near Abadan in Iran, operating in conjunction with No 19 Sector Operations Room as pasrt of No 251 Wing.  It moved to Latakia, Syria in October 1943, Helwan, Egypt in December, Aleppo, Syria in January 1944, Helwan in March, L'Arba Algiers, Algeria in June, Barcaggio, Corsica in July, Calvi, Corsica in August and finally to Gragnano, Italy, where it disbanded in October 1944.


No 265 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a MRU in the UK in late 1940/early 1941 but was still awaiting shipping space in March 1941.  It commenced reforming in Freetown, Sierra Leone in May 1941, administered by No 95 Squadron and later moved to Egypt, but its disbandment date is unknown.


No 266 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in the UK and by May 1942 was in Cyprus, and was located at Koma-Tou-Yialou, Cyprus in August 1943, where it disbanded in October 1944.


No 267 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in the UK as a MRU and by May 1943 was at Helwan having been allocated to Operation 'Husky'.  It moved to a location 11 miles west of Barletta, Italy in December 1943.  By 1 March 1945 it was located at Cattolica under No 287 Wing, DAF in the Ancona Sector.  A disbandment date has not yet been found.


No 268 Air Ministry Experimental Station

Its formation was announced in January 1942 for service at Madras India, and this took place on 8 November 1942 at Kodambakkam, India, but its equipment was then re-allocated to Pondicherry, where it become operational on 8 November.  It had been placed in Care & Maintenance by January 1944 finally disbanding in August 1944.


No 272 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was shown as awaiting despatch to the Middle East, from the UK in November 1941 but was probably diverted to India, becoming operational on 31 March 1942 at Elizabeth Point, Trincomalee as a MRU station, under the control of No 222 Group.  It moved to Batticaloa in July 1942 and by January 1944 was placed in Care and Maintenance, disbanding in April 1945.


No 274 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was shown as awaiting despatch to the Middle East, from the UK in November 1941, but it appears not have become operational as a MRU until October 1942 probably at Wadi Natrun.  It moved to Medenine, Tunisia in February 1943, where it was placed under the administrative control of No 244 Wing.  It later moved to Sfax, Tunisia in April, La Sebala, Tunisia in September, San Cataldo, Italy in October, where it was under the control No 242 Group in Taranto Sector and finally to Rosignano Solvay, Italy in July 1944, where it disbanded in September 1944.


No 275 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was shown as awaiting despatch to the Middle East, from the UK in November 1941, but it appears not have become operational as a MRU until l December 1942 probably at Gaza.  It moved to Leptis Magna, Libya in February 1943 and by November 1943  was at Cap Falcone, Sardinia, where it operated under the control of the 63rd Fighter Wing USAAF in either the Alghero or Cagliari Sectors.  Further moves followed to Porto Palmas, Sardinia in December and finally to Sassari, Sardinia in September 1944, where it disbanded in September 1944.


No 276 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in October 1942 in the Middle East.  It moved to Tahag, Egypt in November, Sidi Barrani, Egypt in March 1943 and finally to Helwan, Egypt in January 1944, where it disbanded in April 1944.

This unit was formed in October 1942 probably in the Middle East.  It was based at Derna, Libya in November, was transferred to AHQ Eastern Mediterranean by December 1944. By 1 March 1945 it was under the control of No 212 Group operating with No 16 Sector Operations Room on a two watch basis.   It disbanded at some point after August 1944 but an actual date has not yet been found.


No 280 Air Ministry Experimental Station

No 285 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as an MRU in June 1941 in the UK in No 60 Wing, administered by  No 78 (Signals) Wing and was assigned to the 2nd Royal Marine Group, Mobile Naval Base Defence Organisation to accompany them when they deployed overseas.

In August 1942 it was at Swanage and it moved to Plage de la Bouliche, Algeria in January 1943 and then to Novi, Algeria in June, where it came under the control of No 338 Wing on 11 November until it disbanded in August 1944.


No 286 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as an MRU in June 1941 in the UK in No 60 Wing, administered by  No 78 (Signals) Wing and was assigned to the 2nd Royal Marine Group, Mobile Naval Base Defence Organisation to accompany them when they deployed overseas.

In August 1942 it was at Renscombe Down and them moved to El Marsa, Algeria in December, coming under the control of No 337 Wing on 10 December.  It moved again in January 1944, to Bou Sfer Plage, Algeria and became operational there on 13 January, it disbanded in August 1944.


No 287 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in September 1941 at Aboukir.  It moved to Beirut, Syria in October 1941, where it disbanded in September 1944.


No 288 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was probably formed in the UK as a MRU, prior to despatch to the Far East, but following the collapse of Singapore it was redirected to India.  In June 1942 it was at Amghata under the control of No 180 Wing, No 224 Group, becoming operational on 15 September and disbanded in January 1944.


No 289 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was probably formed in the UK as a MRU, prior to despatch to the Far East, but following the collapse of Singapore it was redirected to India, and in May 1942 it was at Worli, India, under the control of No 225 Group.

It became operational on 26 September, being transferred to No 227 Group by January 1944, by which time it was on Care & Maintenance, its equipment being maintained by No 554 AMES at Malabar and disbanded in July 1944.


No 290 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a MRU in February 1943 at Renscombe Down.  It moved to various UK locations before moving to Djidjelli, Algeria in June 1943, after which it moved to Acciarolli, Italy, where it operated under the control of the 62nd Fighter Wing USAAF in the Naples Sector.  Further moves followed to Civitavecchia, Italy in June 1944 and Rosignano Solvay, Italy in September, where it was under the control of No 228 Wing in the Leghorn Sector.  By the time it ceased operations on 4 May, it was under the control of No 338 Wing.  It moved to No 56 PTC on 11 May , where it probably disbanded later that month.


No 331 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in February 1943 at Renscombe Down.  It moved to Cape San Vito, Sicily in September, Penna Point, Italy in June 1944 and finally to Pianta di Piscara, Italy in December 1944, under the control of No 323 Wing in in the Foggia Sector.  By 30 April 1945, when it ceased operations, it was under the control of No 338 Wing and disbanded in May 1945.


No 332 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a MRU in February 1943 at Renscombe Down and was allocated to the task force for Operation 'Husky'.  It transferred to Italy on D+15 moving to Brezza in December 1943 and then in June 1944 to Spergola.  During its time in Italy it was involved in providing radar coverage in the Salerno/Naples area and worked with the 64th Fighter Wing of the USAAF.  It was educed to 'number-only' basis between August 1944 and March 1945, disbanding in May 1945.

This unit was formed in December 1942 probably at Char Chapli as a MRU, under the control of No 180 Wing, becoming operational on 11 February 1943 and disbanded in June 1945.

This unit was formed in February 1943 at Kattali, Chittagong as a MRU station, under the control of No 224 Group, becoming operational on 13 March.  By January 1944 it was under the control of No 182 Wing, remaining at Kattali, disbanding in February 1945.

This unit was formed in late 1943as a MRU station, probably at Kanyindan, under the control of No 182 Wing but remained unallocated until it moved to Findli, Chittagong in February 1944.  It moved to Maungdaw in April 1944 where it had been transferred to No 224 Group by December 1944 and disbanded in April 1945.


No 381 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a MRU  in September 1942 at Renscombe Down.  It moved to Lac Des Oiseaux, Algeria in February 1943, then to El Marsa, Algeria on 21 November, becoming operational under the control of No 337 Wing on 10 December, and finally to Le Guelta, Algeria in February 1944, where it disbanded in July 1944.


No 382 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in November 1943 at Algapur (Silchar), India as a MRU, under the control of No 181 Wing and disbanded in February 1945.

No 389 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a MRU in September 1942 at Renscombe Down.  It moved to Philippeville, Algeria in December 1942 and disbanded in March 1944.


No 392 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a MRU in September 1942 at Renscombe Down.  It moved to Alma Marine, Algeria in January 1943 and then to Ajaccio, Corsica in November, where it operated under the control of the 63rd Fighter Wing USAAF in the Ajaccio Sector.  It disbanded in September 1944.


No 394 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in August 1943 probably in Mullaition, Ceylon as a MRU station, under the control of No 183 Wing.  It moved to Columbo, Ceylon later the same month and then to Mullaitivu, Ceylon in November.  By January 1944 it was under the control of No 183 Wing and disbanded in March 1945.


No 395 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a MRU in India, prior to January 1944, by which time it was allocated to No 51 Radio School at Bangalore but no other details have been found so far.


No 397 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in January 1944 probably in Latakia, Syria as a  station, under the control of MACAF.  It moved to Calvi, Corsica in July, Lumino, Corsica in August, Cagnes, France in September and finally to Berra L'Etang, France in October, under the control of No 340 Wing in the Aix Sector and it disbanded in June 1945.


No 398 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in August 1943 at Tura Caves, Egypt.  It moved to Helwan, Egypt later the same month, Merdjayoum Homs, Aleppo, Syria in December and Helwan, Egypt in February 1944, where it disbanded in October 1944.

This unit was formed in June 1941 probably at Ikingi Mariut, later coming under the control of AHQ Eastern Mediterranean working with No 13 Sector Operations Room and disbanded in March 1945.

This unit was formed as a GCI station unit in November 1942 in the UK to participate in Operation 'Torch'.  Landing on D+4, it was based at Djidjelli, Algeria until November 1943 then moved to Bastia in Corsica, where it operated under the control of the 63rd Fighter Wing USAAF in either the Borgo or Ajaccio Sectors.  It was transferred, probably in October 1944, to the control of No 338 Wing in the Leghorn Sector, following which it moved to Gorgona Island in February 1945, ceasing operations there on 7 April and moving to Colle di Val Elsa, Italy, on 13 April, until 30 April when it ceased operations again and moved to Wing HQ.  On 4 May it moved to Sori, then on 8 May to the HQ MACAF Staging Area at Vairano but two days later returned to Wing HQ only to return to Vairano on 12 May.

This unit was formed as a Light Warning Set station, possibly under the control of No 60 Group in mid 1944.  Once training as an air transportable unit was complete it was transferred to No 38 Group. to take part in the forthcoming Operation 'Market', the airborne assault against Arnhem.  On 15 September, HQ First Allied Airborne Army cancelled the need for radar units but the following day the decision was over-turned by General Browning and the unit, together with No 6341, was flown into the battle zone in four gliders.  However the Landing Zone being under heavy AA, which shot down one of the gliders carrying the unit, killing six personnel and mortar fire, meant that the radar equipment could not be erected and the unit's personnel fought as ground troops.  It is assumed it was formally disbanded at some point shortly after this.

This unit was formed as a Light Warning Set station, possibly under the control of No 60 Group in mid 1944.  Once training as an air transportable unit was complete it was transferred to No 38 Group. to take part in the forthcoming Operation 'Market', the airborne assault against Arnhem.  On 15 September, HQ First Allied Airborne Army cancelled the need for radar units but the following day the decision was over-turned by General Browning and the unit, together with No 6080, was flown into the battle zone in four gliders.  However the Landing Zone being under heavy AA and mortar fire, meant that the radar equipment could not be erected and the unit's personnel fought as ground troops.  It is assumed it was formally disbanded at some point shortly after this.

This unit was formed as a COL station in September 1942 in the UK.  It later moved to North Africa, still being non-operational at Philippeville by the end of January 1943.  It later worked with the 2689th HQ of the USAAF at Oran until coming under the control of No 337 Wing on 10 December, and disbanded in September 1944.


No 8005 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a COL station  in September 1942 at UK.  It later moved to North Africa, still being non-operational at Cape Serrat by the end of January 1943.  In November 1943 it moved to Giovanni in Sardinia, where it operated under the control of the 63rd Fighter Wing USAAF in either the Alghero or Caglieri Sectors.  It moved to mainland Italy in July 1944 and by 1 March 1945 it was a COL station located at Populonia, under the control of No 338 Wing in the Leghorn Sector, but ceased to be a control station on 15 March, and ceased to operate altogether on 3 April in preparation for a move to a new site at Antignano, setting up there on 7 April. Ceasing operations on 15 May, it moved to Vairano on 24 May and disbanded in June 1945.


No 8006 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a COL station in September 1942 at Renscombe Down.  It later moved to Algeria, when it was located Dellys by the end of January 1943, where it came under the control of No 338 Wing on 11 November 1943 until it disbanded in August 1944.

This unit was formed in October 1942 probably in UK as a GCI (Type 15) station, under the control of No 60 Group.  It was based at various locations in the UK until June 1944, when it moved to France, having been transferred to No 83 Group in May 1944.  Following experience on the continent, it became clear that there was as great a need for radar units as had been expected, so it had been lodging with No 85 Group.  Therefore, with the end of Operation 'Market' it was returned to the UK in September 1944, where it disbanded in December 1944.


No 8008 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in November 1942 probably in the UK.  It was based in Kent and various other locations in the UK and disbanded in May 1944.

This unit was formed in January 1943 in the Middle East as a GCI (Mobile) station for "special operations".  It was based in North Africa, initially at Port Gueydon.  It remained in North Africa until September 1943 when it moved to Italy, including Pisciotta, where it operated under the control of the 62nd Fighter Wing USAAF in the Naples Sector.  By 1 March 1945 it was located at Guasticce, Italy, under the control of No 338 Wing in the Leghorn Sector.  Further moves followed to other locations until leaving No 338 Wing on 27 August, proceeding to Malt, where it disbanded in September 1945.

This unit was formed in December 1942 in the Middle East as a GCI (Mobile) station.  It was based in Bone, Algeria in January 1943, Cap Serrat, Tunisia in February, Setif, Algeria in March, La Sebala, Tunisia in September and finally Bari, Italy in October, where it was under the control No 242 Group in Taranto Sector.  By 1 March 1945 it was a COL station located at Mola di Bari, under the control of No 323 Wing in the Foggia Sector and disbanded in May 1945.

This unit was formed in June 1943 probably in the UK.  It was based in the UK until June 1944 when it moved to France, was later redesignated No 8024 Forward Director Post (FDP).  Following experience on the continent, it became clear that there was as great a need for radar units as had been expected, so it had been lodging with No 85 Group.  Therefore, with the end of Operation 'Market' it was returned to the UK in September 1944, where it disbanded.


No 8026 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in January 1944 probably at Bombay, under the control of No 2 BSU, ex Assault Wing.  It was based at Calcutta in February and then to Yupbang Ga, Burma in May, where it disbanded in December 1944.

This unit was formed in July 1945 in India.  It later moved to Malaya and disbanded in August 1946.


No 8028 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a GCI station prior to July 1943 in the Middle East, to participate in Operation 'Husky'.  It was based in Italy as a GCI/COL station from September 1943 providing plots for No 1 MORU and No 1 FFCU (Desert Air Force), moving to Maddaloni, in November,  where it operated under the control of the 62nd Fighter Wing USAAF in the Naples Sector.  Further moves followed to Anzio in April 1944, San Vito in June, Fano in August and finally to Rimini, Italy in September 1944, where it and disbanded in April 1945.  It Operated under the codename 'Blackbeer' with units at Tortorella.


No 8029 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in July 1943 probably in Aleppo, under the control of RAF Middle East.  It moved to Izmit, Turkey in January 1944 then to Yesilkoy, Turkey in August, where it worked with No 29 Radar Detachment.  t was still operational on 1 March 1945 but probably disbanded soon afterwards.


No 8030 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in July 1943 in Egypt.  It was based at Cyprus in August 1943 and disbanded in November 1943.

This unit was formed in February 1943 at Renscombe Down.  It was based in Cefalu, Sicily in July 1943 and Capo Vaticano, Italy in September.  By 1 March 1945 it was located at Lanciano under the control of No 323 Wing in the Foggia Sector and disbanded in May 1945.


No 8032 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in February 1943 at Renscombe Down.  It was based in North Africa, Sicily, Brindisi in Italy, where it was under the control No 242 Group in Taranto Sector.  Moving to Yugoslavia in March 1945,  it disbanded in June 1945.


No 8033 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a GCI station in the UK to participate in Operation 'Husky', arriving in Sicily in July 1943.  It was based in Italy as a GCI/COL station from September 1943 providing plots for No 1 MORU and No 1 FFCU (Desert Air Force), operating under the codename 'Syrup' with units at Tortorella under the control of MAAF.  By 1 March 1945 it was at Bellaria and disbanded after this date.


No 8035 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed as a GCI station in May 1943 in North-west Africa to participate in Operation 'Husky'.  It was based in Italy from September 1943 providing plots for the 64th Fighter Wing USAAF, moving to Crispano in October 1943, San Vito in March 1944, San Gaetano in June 1944 and Ledramont, Agay in September 1944 and operated under the codename 'Mimic' with units at Gaudo/Montecorvino having transferred to No 202 Group by December 1944 and disbanded in April 1945.


No 8036 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in December 1943 probably in Aleppo, under the control of MAAF.  It was based in Italy as a GCI/COL station from September 1943 providing plots for No 1 MORU and No 1 FFCU (Desert Air Force), moving to Civita Castellana, in June 1944, Crete in July, then back to Italy at Ospedalleto, near Forli in November and finally to Treviso, in June 1945, where it disbanded in July 1945.


No 8037 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in October 1943 probably at Helwan.  It moved to Aleppo, Syria in December, back to Helwan in March 1944 and then to Ciyli, Turkey in August, where it disbanded in October 1944.


No 8038 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in September 1943 at Helwan.  It moved to Carasino, Italy in December 1943, Talsano in February 1944, Kalamaki, Greece in October, where it joined No 337 Wing, who relocated it to Kimi.  With the end of hostillities in Greece it returned to Hassani in November, for return to Italy, where it disbanded in December 1944.


No 8039 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed by January 1944 probably in India as a GCI station, under the control of No 2 BSU, ex Assault Wing.  It was based at Bombay but by June had moved to Calcutta, was transferred to No 225 Group by December 1944 and disbanded in post June 1944.

This unit was formed as a GCI station prior to July 1943 in North-west Africa, to participate in Operation 'Husky'.  It moved to Italy in September on D+7, where it undertook plotting for the 64th Fighter Wing USAAF.   It then seems to have returned to Canicattini Bagni, Sicily in February 1944 before returning to Italy at Chiaravalle in July.  Here came under No 287 Wing in the Ancona Sector, later moving to Capua, after March 1945, where it disbanded in July 1945.


No 8044 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in March 1943 at Renscombe Down.  It moved to La Senia, Algeria in May 1943, then to Naples by 1 November 1943, where it operated under the control of the 62nd Fighter Wing USAAF in the Naples Sector.  By 1 March 1945 it was locatedat Ripalta under the control of No 323 Wing in the Foggia Sector and disbanded sometime after this.

This unit was formed in Au 43 probably in Manning Town, Ceylon as a GCI station, under the control of No 183 Wing.  It moved to Ridgeway, Ceylon in December, returning to Manning Town in January 1944, where it disbanded in March 1945.

No 14023 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in April 1944 probably in Algiers as a  station, under the control of MACAF.  It moved to Corsica in June, Punt Ala, Italy in August and finally to Antignano di Livorno, Italy in September, under the control of No 338 Wing in the Leghorn Sector.  It ceased operating on  27 April 1945 in preparation for a move to Sori in Italy, which it began on 30 April, arriving and setting up on 2 May, becoming operational the following day.  However, it was back at Wing HQ on 18 May then moved to Vairano on 22 May and disbanded in June 1945.

No 15053 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in August 1943 probably in UK as a Type 15 GCI (FDP) station, under the control of No 83 Group.  It was based in the UK, moving to France in June 1944, soon proving its ability to move as required and in the last two weeks off August, operated from four different sites.  Further moves continued to Boechout, Belgium on 12 September, then with the failure of the two LW Sets sent to Arnhem it moved to Eindhoven in the Netherlands on 21 September to provide coverage for that area.  After Arnhem, it moved to a site south-east of Nijmegen.  It was later held in reserve at Labbeck, near Xanten for Operation 'Varsity', the Rhine crossing, eventually crossing the river on 31 March, becoming operational at Neiunkirchen on 3 April as the Forward Radar Control.   It was disbanded in May 1945.


No 15054 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in August 1943 probably in UK as a Type 15 GCI (FDP) station, under the control of No 83 Group.  It was based in the UK, moving to France in June 1944, soon proving its ability to move as required and in the last two weeks off August, operated from four different sites.  Further moves continued to Belgium, then during Operation 'Market', the assault at Arnhem, an element was moved to a location between Uden and Nijmegen in the Netherlands.  Following the Arnhem operation, the detachment returned to the main unit at Wauberg in Belgium.  On 17 March 1945 it moved to Bonninghardt near the Rhine to provide coverage to the forces involved in Operation 'Varsity', the crossing of the Rhine.  It finally moved to Travemunde, near Lubeck on 6 May, where it was disbanded later that month.

This unit was formed in December 1944 probably in the UK as a Type 15 GCI station, under the control of No 84 Group.  It almost immediately moved to Lourdes, moving to Ghent, Belgium in December.  By early January it was at Gilseinde in Belgium when it hit by a V-2 which destroyed nine of its vehicles but only caused minor injuries to three airmen.  Later in the month it moved to Gilze Rijen, Holland, where a V-1 landed on one of the unit's billets but again, fortunately, only minor injuries were sustained.  It moved to Beers, Holland in March and finally to Wildeshausen, Germany in April, where it disbanded in May 1945.


No 15062 Air Ministry Experimental Station

This unit was formed in May 1944 probably in the UK as a Type 15 GCI station, under the control of No 84 Group.  It was based at Home Farm, Goodwood in May 1944 before moving to Peacehaven, later the same month.  It arrived on the continent at Gassel, Holland in December.  By early 1945 it was being referred to as No 6 FDP, within the group, moving to a location between the Reichwalde Forest and the Rhine on 20 March.  In May it moved to Eelde, Holland, Rostrup, Germany in July 1945 and finally to Wesendorf, Germany in March 1946, where it disbanded in February 1946.
