He entered the RAF College in 1933 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1935.  He retired on 31 Oct 1957 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

 

Duncan Whiteley BALDEN (33154)

He entered the RAF College in 1933, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.  He also represented the college in Athletics, Rugby and Cricket.

He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1935.  He retired on 27 Jul 1958 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

 

John William BAYLEY (33155) MBE, CEng, AFRAeS

He entered the RAF College in 1933, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Swimming and Rugby.

He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1935.  He retired on 30 Apr 1970 in the rank of A/Cdre.

He transferred to the Technical Branch.  He was a graduate of the Imperial Defence College, the Joint Services Staff College and the RAF Staff College.

Tristram Bernard de la Poer BERESFORD (33156) DSO, DFC and Bar

He entered the RAF College in 1933, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Boxing, Hockey and Rugby.

He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1935.  He retired on 5 Jun 1962 in the rank of A/Cdre.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College and the Central Flying School.

Henry Everard Crichton BOXER (33157) OBE

He entered the RAF College in 1933, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.  He also represented the college in Soccer, Athletics, Swimming and Rugby.  On graduating he was awarded the Sword of Honour.

He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1935.  He retired on 29 Nov 1967 in the rank of A/Cdre.

He was a graduate of the Imperial Defence College, Canadian or Indian National Defence College or US National War College and the RAF Staff College.

Neil Ballingal Reid BROMLEY (33158) OBE, DFC,

He entered the RAF College in 1933, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Shooting.

He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1935.  He was reported missing in action on 6 Sep 1944 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was killed whilst flying in Mosquito VI, PZ230 VI- of No 169 Sqn, which blew up in the air near Accum in Germany during a bomber support sortie.  He is buried in Sage War Cemetery.

Thomas Macdonald BUCHANAN (33159)

He entered the RAF College in 1933, was a member of B Sqn.  He also represented the college in Soccer and Hockey.

He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1935.  He retired on 20 Dec 1956 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

 

Anthony William John CLARK (33160)

He entered the RAF College in 1933, was a member of A Sqn.  On graduating he was awarded the Humanistics Prize.

He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1935.  He was killed on active service on 17 May 1941 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was killed whilst flying in Wellington, R1587 OJ-M of No 149 Sqn, which was hit by Hurricane, V7225 of No 1401 Met Flt.  He is buried in Beck Row (St John) Churchyard.

Charles Stanley COOPER (33161) DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1933, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Fencing.

He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1935.  He was killed in action on 25 Sep 1943 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was killed whilst flying in Halifax II, JD297 DY-Q of No 102 Sqn, which crashed near Mauberge in France during a raid to Aachen.  He is buried in Maubeuge-Centre Cemetery

Frank Edgar CROCE (33162)

He entered the RAF College in 1933, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl, after being awarded a scholarship as an apprentice at Halton.  He also represented the college in Hockey and Soccer.

He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1935.  He retired on 26 Nov 1963 in the rank of Gp Capt.

 

Wilfrid Albert Antony de FREITAS (33163) DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1933, was a member of B Sqn.  He also represented the college in Hockey and Cricket.

He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1935.  He was killed in action on 20 Dec 1941 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was killed whilst flying in Wellington IC, Z8728 'U' of No 70 Sqn, which crashed as it attempted a forced landing at Bir el Garanis following an engine failure on its return from a raid to Benina.  He is commemorated on the Alamein Memorial.

Frederick Oscar DICKSON (33164)

He entered the RAF College in 1933, was a member of A Sqn.  He also represented the college in Athletics and Cross-Country.

He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1935.  He was killed in action on 5 Apr 1940 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He was lost without trace whilst flying in Whitley IV, K9040 of No 51 Sqn, which was carrying out a night training exercise over the Bristol Channel and is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Charles Desmond HACKETT (33165)

He entered the RAF College in 1933, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.

He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1935.  He was killed on active service on 4 Apr 1941 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was killed whilst flying in Blenheim I, L6667 of No 27 Sqn, which dived into the sea off Singapore.  He is commemorated on the Singapore Memorial.

Noel Mudie HALL (33166) AFC

He entered the RAF College in 1933, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Athletics, Hockey and Cricket.

He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1935.  He was killed on active service on 8 Aug 1940 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He was killed whilst flying in Hurricane I, P2981 of No 257 Sqn, which was shot down over the Channel whilst on patrol.  He is buried in Criel-sur-Mer Communal Cemetery.

Richard Ian JONES (33167) CB, AFC

He entered the RAF College in 1933, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Shooting, Cricket and Squash.

He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1935.  He retired on 21 Apr 1970 in the rank of AVM.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College and the RAF Flying College.

Dillon Piers Denis Gerard KELLY (33168) DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1933, was a member of A Sqn.  He also represented the college in Cross-Country and Rowing.

He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1935.  He retired on 7 Oct 1961 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the Joint Services Staff College and the RAF Staff College.

Arthur John MASON (33169) DFC and Bar, AFC

He entered the RAF College in 1933, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  On graduating he was awarded the King's Medal, Abdy Gerrard Fellows Memorial Prize and the John Anthony Chance Memorial Prize.

He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1935.  He died in service on 15 Sep 1960 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was serving at RAF Innsworth and died in the RAF Hospital at Wroughton.  He is buried in All Hallows Churchyard, South Cerney.

James Douglas MELVIN (33170) CB, OBE

He entered the RAF College in 1933 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1935.  He retired on 6 Mar 1961 in the rank of A/Cdre.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College and the Central Flying School.

Arthur William Darley MILLER (33171)

He entered the RAF College in 1933, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Tennis and Hockey.

He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1935.  He retired on 1 Dec 1957 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Peter Theodore PHILPOTT (33172) CB, CBE

He entered the RAF College in 1933, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Cross Country.  On graduating he was awarded the R M Groves Memorial Prize.

He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1935.  He retired on 29 Sep 1970 in the rank of AVM.

He was a graduate of the Imperial Defence College and the RAF Staff College.

Michael Evelyn Wallace SCOTT-MACKIRDY (33173)

He entered the RAF College in 1933 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1935.  He resigned his permanent commission on 22 Mar 1938 in the rank of Fg Off.

 

James Hogarth SLATER (33174) AFC

He entered the RAF College in 1933, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Rugby, Squash, Athletics, Hockey and Tennis.

He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1935.  He was reported missing in action on 14 Mar 1943 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was killed whilst flying in Spitfire IX, EN133 'B' of No 611 Sqn, which was shot down by Fw 190s during Rodeo 188 over Northern France.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Anthony Bagnold SOWTER (33175)

He entered the RAF College in 1933, was a member of C Sqn.  He also represented the college in Tennis.

He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1935.  He resigned his permanent commission on 27 Jan 1936 in the rank of Plt Off.

 

Lawrence Robert STEWART (33176)

He entered the RAF College in 1933 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1935.  He retired on 27 Jul 1955 in the rank of Gp Capt.

 

Edward Walter THORNEWILL (33177)

He entered the RAF College in 1933, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Tennis and Fencing.

He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1935.  He retired on 28 Jan 1948 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

 

Peter Wooldridge TOWNSEND (33178) CVO, DSO, DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1933, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.  He also represented the college in Rugby, Athletics and Swimming.

He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1935.  He retired on 18 Nov 1956 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He would eventually become involved with Princess Margaret.

Gerard Euan WALLACE (33179)

He entered the RAF College in 1933, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Squash.

He was commissioned on 27 Jul 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 10 Sep 1935.  He was reported missing in action on 20 Aug 1943 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was killed whilst flying in Catalina IB, FP302 'R' of No 209 Sqn, which struck the sea whilst carrying a practice attack at night off Mombasa.  He is commemorated on the Alamein Memorial.

James Grahame THOMPSON ()

He entered the RAF College in 1933, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Boxing.

He was commissioned on 14 Dec 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 28 Jan 1936.  He was killed in a flying accident on 17 Jun 1937 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was killed whilst carrying out a dummy torpedo attack in Blackburn Shark, K8511 of the School of Naval Co-operation.  He dived to steeply and the aircraft broke up as he pulled out and dived into the sea near Langstone Harbour.

Arthur Reginald ATKINS (33213)

He entered the RAF College in 1934, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.

He was commissioned on 14 Dec 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 28 Jan 1936.  He retired on 22 Mar 1966 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

 

Eric BANTHORPE    (33216)

He entered the RAF College in 1934, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  On graduating he was awarded the John Anthony Chance Memorial Prize.

He was commissioned on 14 Dec 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 28 Jan 1936.  He retired on 16 Jan 1959 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

 

James Alan CHORLTON (33230) OBE

He entered the RAF College in 1934, was a member of A Sqn.  He also represented the college in Athletics and Cross-Country.  On graduating he was awarded the Humanistics Prize.

He was commissioned on 14 Dec 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 28 Jan 1936.  He retired on 19 May 1958 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

 

John DARWEN (33237) DSO, DFC and Bar

He entered the RAF College in 1934, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.  He also represented the college in Boxing, Swimming and Fencing.

He was commissioned on 14 Dec 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 28 Jan 1936.  He was killed in action on 7 Oct 1943 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was serving with No 239 Wing at the time of his death, the cause of which has not yet been ascertained.  He is buried in Sangro River War Cemetery

Peter George Scott DICKENSON (33238)

He entered the RAF College in 1934, was a member of C Sqn.  He also represented the college in Rowing.

He was commissioned on 14 Dec 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 28 Jan 1936.  He was killed in action on 8 Nov 1941 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He died from exposure in a dinghy after ditching in Whitley V, Z9130 of No 51 Sqn, which came down in the North Sea during a raid on Berlin.  He is buried in Sage War Cemetery.

John Noel DOWLAND (33239) GC

He entered the RAF College in 1934 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 14 Dec 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 28 Jan 1936.  He was killed in action on 13 Jan 1942 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was killed whilst flying in Maryland, AH721 of No 69 Sqn, which was shot down and ditched as it approached Malta at the end of a reconnaissance mission.  He is buried in Malta (Capuccini) Naval Cemetery.

Antony Greville DUDGEON (33240) CBE, DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1934 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 14 Dec 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 28 Jan 1936.  He retired on 6 Jun 1968 in the rank of AVM.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College and the RAF Flying College.

Gerald ELSMIE ()

He entered the RAF College in 1934, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Squash and Tennis.  On graduating he was awarded the R M Groves Memorial Prize.

He was commissioned on 14 Dec 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 28 Jan 1936.  He was killed in a flying accident on 17 May 1939 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He was serving with No 39 Sqn and was killed in a night flying accident at Risalpur

Frank Robert FOSTER (33248)

He entered the RAF College in 1934, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Rugby and Athletics.

He was commissioned on 14 Dec 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 28 Jan 1936.  He retired on 23 Dec 1957 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

John Dale GREEN (33253)

He entered the RAF College in 1934, was a member of C Sqn.  He also represented the college in Athletics and Soccer.

He was commissioned on 14 Dec 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 28 Jan 1936.  He was killed on active service on 10 Apr 1944 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was killed whilst flying in Lancaster III, JB471 of the PFNTU, which crashed near Llanwrtyd Wells in Breconshire after catching fire in the air during a cross-country exercise.  He was cremated at Golders Green Crematorium.

Robert Keith JEFFRIES (33262) OBE

He entered the RAF College in 1934, was a member of C Sqn.  On graduating he was awarded the Abdy Gerrard Fellows Memorial Prize.

He was commissioned on 14 Dec 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 28 Jan 1936.  He retired on 14 Mar 1965 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He transferred to the Technical Branch.  He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Richard Maitland LONGMORE (33265) OBE

He entered the RAF College in 1934, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Squash and Cricket.

He was commissioned on 14 Dec 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 28 Jan 1936.  He was reported missing in action on 4 Oct 1943 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was killed whilst flying in Liberator III, FL923 of No 120 Sqn, which was hit by flak from U-539 whilst escorting ON204 and exploded on hitting the sea.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

David Oswald Farquhar LUMSDEN (33267) DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1934, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Rugby.

He was commissioned on 14 Dec 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 28 Jan 1936.  He retired on 14 Sep 1961 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Lewis MATHIAS (33270)

He entered the RAF College in 1934, was a member of A Sqn.  He also represented the college in Swimming.

He was commissioned on 14 Dec 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 28 Jan 1936.  He retired on 2 Nov 1957 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

John Collins MAYHEW (33271)

He entered the RAF College in 1934, was a member of A Sqn.  He also represented the college in Athletics and Cross-Country.

He was commissioned on 14 Dec 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 28 Jan 1936.  He was killed in action on 2 Dec 1941 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was killed whilst flying in Beaufort I, AW221 OA-V of No 22 Sqn, which failed to return from a raid on Nantes.  He is buried in Nantes (Pont-du-Cens) Communal Cemetery.

Donald MCINTYRE (33269)

He entered the RAF College in 1934 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 14 Dec 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 28 Jan 1936.  He was killed in a flying accident on 12 Mar 1947 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was killed whilst flying in Halifax A Mk 9, RT922 'F' of No 47 Sqn, which flew into the ground near Leek in Staffordshire whilst flying below the briefed height during a supply dropping sortie in poor weather conditions.  He is buried in Buxton Cemetery.

Patrick Jonathan Kenyon PIKE ()

He entered the RAF College in 1934, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  On graduating he was awarded the King's Medal.

He was commissioned on 14 Dec 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 28 Jan 1936.  He was killed in a flying accident on 1 Nov 1938 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He was killed when Anson, K8836 of No 206 Sqn, flew into the sea off Flamborough Head in poor weather during a night navigation exercise.

Charles Henry PRESS (33279) CEng, AFRAeS

He entered the RAF College in 1934, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Rugby.

He was commissioned on 14 Dec 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 28 Jan 1936.  He retired on 3 Jun 1970 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He transferred to the Technical Branch.  He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Richard Willoughby REYNOLDS (33280)

He entered the RAF College in 1934, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.

He was commissioned on 14 Dec 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 28 Jan 1936.  He was killed on active service on 11 Sep 1939 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He was possibly killed whilst flying Hurricane I, L1707 of No 79 Sqn which dived into the ground at Chelsham, Surrey.

Thomas Stephen RIVETT-CARNAC (33281) DSO, DFC and Bar

He entered the RAF College in 1934, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Rugby, Swimming and Boxing.

He was commissioned on 14 Dec 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 28 Jan 1936.  He retired on 5 Aug 1959 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Walter Louis ROWBOTTOM ()

He entered the RAF College in 1934, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Rugby.

He was commissioned on 14 Dec 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 28 Jan 1936.  He was killed in a flying accident on 23 Jul 1938 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was killed whilst flying Hart, K2115 of No 11 Sqn at Mardan, India, when he went into a spin and failed to recover.

Malcolm Phillip's SKINNER (33286)

He entered the RAF College in 1934, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.  He also represented the college in Hockey, Squash and Cricket.  On graduating he was awarded the Sword of Honour.

He was commissioned on 14 Dec 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 28 Jan 1936.  He died in service on 6 Dec 1939 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He died from injuries sustained whilst flying Lysander I, L4763 of No 13 Sqn, which hit trees after stalling near Mons-en-Chaussee and is buried in Peronne Communal Cemetery Extension.

Brian Eustace SMITH-REWSE (33288)

He entered the RAF College in 1934, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.  He also represented the college in Boxing, Hockey and Tennis.

He was commissioned on 14 Dec 1935 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 28 Jan 1936.  He was killed on active service on 3 Jan 1943 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was killed whilst flying in Beaufighter VIF, V8621 of No 153 Sqn, which flew into high ground near Djidjelli whilst flying in poor visibility.  He is buried in La Reunion War Cemetery
