Richard James BERENS (26252)

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.  He also represented the college in Cricket and Athletics.

He was commissioned on 23 Jul 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1932.  He was killed in a flying accident on 4 Dec 1932 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was killed whilst flying in an aircraft of the Hampshire Aeroplane Club which crashed into Southampton Water

Francis Campbell de la Poer BERESFORD PEIRSE (26253)

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.  He also represented the college in Rowing and Athletics.

He was commissioned on 23 Jul 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1932.  He retired on 23 Jul 1952 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the Joint Services Staff College and the RAF Staff College.

Jack BRADLEY (26254)

He entered the RAF College in 1930 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 23 Jul 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1932.  He was killed on 12 Jun 1933 in the rank of Plt Off.

He had been forced to abandon his aircraft twice, the first time as a cadet when he was carrying out unauthorised aerobatics, for which he was rusticated (expelled temporarily) for a term.  The second time occurred when he was thrown out of an aircraft due to turbulence whilst serving with 14 Sqn.  He was killed shortly after this incident whilst travelling in a Morris six-wheeler that was carrying official mail from Amman to Ramleh overturned

Sir Charles BROUGHTON (26255) KBE, CB

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of B Sqn.  He also represented the college in Swimming and Fencing.

He was commissioned on 23 Jul 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1932.  He retired on 12 Oct 1968 in the rank of AM.

He was a graduate of the Imperial Defence College, the RAF Staff College and the Central Flying School.

Horace Paul BURWOOD (26256)

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of B Sqn.  He also represented the college in Soccer.

He was commissioned on 23 Jul 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1932.  He retired on 29 Jan 1958 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

 

Robert Alfred Copsey CARTER (26257) CB, DSO, DFC AFRAeS,

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Rugby and Athletics.

He was commissioned on 23 Jul 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1932.  He retired on 24 Apr 1964 in the rank of A/Cdre.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Andrew Nicholson COMBE (26258) AFC

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.  He also represented the college in Hockey.  On graduating he was awarded the Sword of Honour and the John Anthony Chance Memorial Prize.

He was commissioned on 23 Jul 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1932.  He retired on 29 Sep 1957 in the rank of Gp Capt.

 

Raymond Edward de PENTHENY O'KELLY (26259)

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Cricket.

He was commissioned on 23 Jul 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1932.  He was killed in a flying accident on 24 Dec 1933 in the rank of Plt Off.

 

Sir Donald Randell EVANS (26260) KBE, CB, DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.

He was commissioned on 23 Jul 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1932.  He retired on 28 Feb 1970 in the rank of ACM.

He was a graduate of the Imperial Defence College, the Joint Services Staff College and the RAF Staff College.

Thomas George Lamb GALE (33001)

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Cricket.

He was commissioned on 23 Jul 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1932.  He resigned his permanent commission on 17 Nov 1940 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

After resigning his commission he joined the ATA, becoming OC, Advanced Flying Training School.

Robert Jerram GOSNELL (33002) DSO, DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of C Sqn.  He also represented the college in Swimming, Athletics and Soccer.

He was commissioned on 23 Jul 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1932.  He retired on 1 Apr 1966 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of NATO Defence College, the RAF Staff College and the Central Flying School.

Bernard Henry GULLY ()

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of B Sqn.  He also represented the college in Fencing.

He was commissioned on 23 Jul 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1932.  He was killed in a flying accident on 7 Oct 1932 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was killed whilst flying in Virginia VII, J8237 of No 58 Sqn, crashed at Godalming, Surrey after wing failure.

Herbert York HUMPHREYS (33003) DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of A Sqn.  He also represented the college in Swimming and Athletics.

He was commissioned on 23 Jul 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1932.  He retired on 2 Feb 1958 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Sir David John Pryer LEE (33004) GBE, CB

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Athletics.

He was commissioned on 23 Jul 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1932.  He retired on 19 Mar 1971 in the rank of ACM.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Harold Guy LEONARD-WILLIAMS (33005) CB, CBE

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.

He was commissioned on 23 Jul 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1932.  He retired on 2 Apr 1968 in the rank of AVM.

He was a graduate of the Joint Services Staff College and the RAF Staff College.

Claude Raymond Dixon Lewis LLOYD (33006) OBE

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Cricket and Shooting.

He was commissioned on 23 Jul 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1932.  He retired on 6 Sep 1961 in the rank of Gp Capt.

 

Stanley Jackson MARCHBANK (33007) OBE, DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Athletics, Cricket, Hockey and Soccer.

He was commissioned on 23 Jul 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1932.  He retired on 7 Nov 1959 in the rank of A/Cdre.

He was a graduate of the Joint Services Staff College and the RAF Staff College.

Douglas MICHELL (33008)

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Cross-Country and Swimming.

He was commissioned on 23 Jul 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1932.  He retired on 14 Oct 1958 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Lawrence Monck MIDDLETON (33009)

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Squash.

He was commissioned on 23 Jul 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 9 Sep 1932.  He retired on 5 Apr 1933 in the rank of Plt Off.

 

Crichton Charles MORTON (33010) CBE, CEng, FIERE, MIEE, AFRAeS

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of B Sqn.  He also represented the college in Hockey and Cross Country.

He was commissioned on 23 Jul 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1932.  He retired on 26 Oct 1966 in the rank of A/Cdre.

He transferred to the Technical Branch.  He was a graduate of the Joint Services Staff College.

John Ralph Alexander PEEL (33011) DSO, DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Hockey, Cricket and Squash.

He was commissioned on 23 Jul 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1932.  He retired on 20 Jan 1948 in the rank of Gp Capt.

 

Mervyn Hugh RHYS (33012) CBE, AFC

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Rugby and Rowing.  On graduating he was awarded the R M Groves Memorial Prize and the Abdy Gerrard Fellows Memorial Prize.

He was commissioned on 23 Jul 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1932.  He retired on 21 Jul 1959 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College and the Central Flying School.

Theodore Urquhart ROLFE (33013) OBE

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of C Sqn.  He also represented the college in Swimming.

He was commissioned on 23 Jul 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1932.  He was killed in a flying accident on 9 Feb 1948 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was killed whilst flying in Anson C Mk 19, TX168 of the Metropolitan Communications Sqn which crashed whilst attempting an overshoot at Hendon during an asymmetric training flight.  He is buried in Paddington Borough Council Cemetery.

Richard Henry SHAW (33014) DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1930 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 23 Jul 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1932.  He retired on 18 Mar 1954 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Donald Ross SHORE (33015) DFC, AFC

He entered the RAF College in 1930 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 23 Jul 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1932.  He retired on 18 Sep 1952 in the rank of Gp Capt.

 

William Erskine Snell TANNER (33016)

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.

He was commissioned on 23 Jul 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 26 Aug 1932.  He was killed in a flying accident on 23 Apr 1934 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was flying a Hawker Fury I (K2044 or K2047) of No 1 Sqn when he collided with another aircraft of the same unit during flight attack training.  The pilot of K2044 managed to abandon the aircraft but was nevertheless killed, whilst the pilot of K2047 was killed in the collision. 

Thomas Lawton MOSELEY (33064)

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.

He was commissioned on 15 Jul 1933 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 15 Aug 1933.  He was killed in action on 25 Aug 1942 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was killed whilst flying in Sunderland III, W4026 'M' of No 228 Sqn, which flew into Eagle's Rock whilst flying off track on a flight to Iceland.  He is buried in Oban (Pennyfuir) Cemetery.

He entered the RAF College in 1931, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Hockey and Athletics.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1933.  He retired on 1 Sep 1955 in the rank of Gp Capt.

 

Alfonso Rudolph Gordon BAX (33018)

He entered the RAF College in 1931, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Soccer.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1933.  He retired on 10 Sep 1955 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

 

Ridley Lewkenor BRADFORD (33019)

He entered the RAF College in 1931, was a member of C Sqn.  He also represented the college in Fencing and Swimming.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1933.  He was reported missing in action on 1 May 1940 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was killed whilst flying Wellington IA, P9213 of No 37 Sqn, which was probably shot down by fighters off the Norwegian coast and is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Anthony Neville BRAY (33020)

He entered the RAF College in 1931 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1933.  He retired on 6 Dec 1933 in the rank of Plt Off.

 

Willem Rowland BROTHERHOOD (33021) CBE

He entered the RAF College in 1931, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.  He also represented the college in Cross-Country, Athletics and Rowing.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1933.  He retired on 13 Feb 1961 in the rank of A/Cdre.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College and the RAF Flying College.

Lloyd COULSON (33022)

He entered the RAF College in 1931 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1933.  He retired on 11 Aug 1958 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

 

Robert George COVENTRY (33023)

He entered the RAF College in 1931 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1933.  He was killed on active service on 23 Sep 1940 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He was killed whilst flying Battle I, L8797of No 17 OTU, which crashed in a forced landing following an engine failure. He is buried in Down Hatherley (St Mary and Corpus Christi) Churchyard.

Edward Basil Charles DAVIES (33024)

He entered the RAF College in 1931, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  On graduating he was awarded the R M Groves Memorial Prize.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1933.  He retired on 27 Jun 1955 retaining the rank of Gp Capt.

He died in the Royal County Hospital, Ryde on the Isle of Wight on 5-Sep-1960.

Joscelyne Forgan Houssemayne Du BOULAY (33025) CBE, DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1931, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Athletics and Cross-Country.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1933.  He retired on 3 Jun 1946 in the rank of Gp Capt.

 

Denis Henry FURZE (33026)

He entered the RAF College in 1931, was a member of B Sqn.  He also represented the college in Cross-Country.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1933.  He was killed in a flying accident on 30 Jun 1933 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was killed whilst flying an unidentified Wapiti of No 28 Sqn, which overturned on Ambala racecourse, whilst turning near the ground.

Albert GOLDING (33027) DFC and Bar

He entered the RAF College in 1931, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Rugby, Boxing and Swimming.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1933.  He was killed in action on 26 Mar 1942 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was killed whilst flying in Wellington I, W5372 PH-D of No 12 Sqn, which was shot down by a night fighter over Holland on a raid to Essen.  He is buried in Bergen General Cemetery.

Mark HASTINGS (33028)

He entered the RAF College in 1931, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1933.  He was killed in action on 29 Jun 1940 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was killed whilst flying in Whitley V, P4948 of No 77 Sqn, which was lost on a raid to Frankfurt.  He is buried in Rheinberg War Cemetery.

Douglas Sydney KITE (33029)

He entered the RAF College in 1931, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Boxing and Rowing.  On graduating he was awarded the Humanistics Prize.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1933.  He retired on 31 Mar 1960 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Ronald John KNIGHTS-WHITTOME (33030)

He entered the RAF College in 1931 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1933.  He died in service on 9 Nov 1941 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He died in the RAF Hospital at Halton.

Ian Grant MACKAY (33031)

He entered the RAF College in 1931, was a member of ? Sqn.  He also represented the college in Athletics.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1933.  He retired on 23 Jul 1963 retaining the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Eric Douglas MacKinlay NELSON (33032) CB

He entered the RAF College in 1931, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.  He also represented the college in Boxing.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1933.  He retired on 5 Oct 1963 in the rank of A/Cdre.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Martin John Okes PARISH (33033)

He entered the RAF College in 1931 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1933.  He was killed in a flying accident on 6 Jun 1934 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was drowned when the Vildebeest of No 100 Sqn, he was flying crashed into the sea during an exercise off Singapore.  He is buried in Kranji Military Cemetery.

Samuel Patrick Aylmer PATMORE (33034) OBE

He entered the RAF College in 1931, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Hockey.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1933.  He retired on 1 Oct 1958 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the Joint Services Staff College.

Peter John PEARSON ROGERS (33035)

He entered the RAF College in 1931, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Hockey.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1933.  He was killed in a flying accident on 12 Feb 1935 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was killed whist flying a Hawker Nimrod of No 800 (Fleet fighter) Sqn when he was in collision with another Nimrod of the same unit, piloted by Fg Off (Sub-Lt, RN) Philip Alexander Roby Bremridge, who was injured near Malta.

David Alwyne PEMBERTON (33036) DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1931, was a member of C Sqn.  He also represented the college in Shooting.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1933.  He died in service on 3 Nov 1940 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He died from injuries possibly sustained whilst flying Hurricane I, P2751 of No 1 (RCAF) Sqn, which flew into the ground near Wittering.  He is buried in Broadway (St Eadburgh) New Churchyard.

John Clifford POPE (33037) CB, CBE, CEng, FIMechE, FRAeS

He entered the RAF College in 1931, was a member of C Sqn.  On graduating he was awarded the John Anthony Chance Memorial Prize.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1933.  He retired on 29 Sep 1966 in the rank of AVM.

He was a graduate of the Joint Services Staff College and the RAF Staff College.

Sir (Melvin) Kenneth Drowley PORTER (33038) KCB, CBE, CEng, FIEE, FRAeS, FBIM

He entered the RAF College in 1931, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college at Soccer and Boxing.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1933.  He retired on 1 Jul 1967 in the rank of AM.

He transferred to the Technical Branch and was a graduate of the Imperial Defence College and the RAF Staff College.

Anthony George POWELL (33039) CEng, MIEE

He entered the RAF College in 1931, was a member of B Sqn.  He also represented the college in Shooting.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1933.  He retired on 4 Feb 1969 in the rank of A/Cdre.

He transferred to the Technical Branch.  He was a graduate of the Imperial Defence College and the RAF Staff College.

Philip Read ROBINSON (33040)

He entered the RAF College in 1931, was a member of C Sqn.  He also represented the college in Rugby, after being awarded a scholarship as an apprentice at Halton.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1933.  He was killed on active service on 6 Aug 1941 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

The exact details of his death have not been ascertained but his death was registered in Ely.  He was cremated at Cambridge Crematorium.

Robert Vincent ROLPH (33043)

He entered the RAF College in 1931, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.  He also represented the college in Fencing and Tennis.  On graduating he was awarded the Sword of Honour.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1933.  He was killed in a flying accident on 28 Feb 1933 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was killed whilst flying Hawker Fury I, K1936 of No 43 Sqn when he collided with another aircraft, K1933 of the same squadron whilst in the circuit at Tangmere.  The other aircraft landed safely.

Percy Stanley SALTER (33041) AFC

He entered the RAF College in 1931, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Shooting.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1933.  He was killed on active service on 18 Apr 1942 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was killed whilst flying in Lancaster I, R5539 of the AAEE, which crashed near Malmesbury in Wiltshire.  He was cremated at Southampton Crematorium.

Paul de Grey Horatio SEYMOUR (33042)

He entered the RAF College in 1931, was a member of C Sqn.  He also represented the college in Swimming.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1933.  He was killed in action on 17 Nov 1942 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was killed whilst flying in Halifax II, W7863 NP-V of No 158 Sqn, which came down near Consigny whilst carrying out a Nickelling sortie over France.  He is buried in Consigny Communal Cemetery.

Richard George STONE (33044)

He entered the RAF College in 1931, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Soccer and Athletics.  On graduating he was awarded the Abdy Gerrard Fellows Memorial Prize.

He was commissioned on 17 Dec 1932 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1933.  He retired on 17 Dec 1966 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He transferred to the Technical Branch.  He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.
