Cranwell Graduations 1921


The following cadets graduated from the RAF College at Cranwell on 19 December 1921.  The reviewing officer at the graduation parade was AVM Sir John Salmond KCB, CMG, CVO, DSO standing in for Captain the Rt Hon F E Guest.

Walter Joseph Martini AKERMAN (16018)

He entered the RAF College in 1920, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1921 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1922.  He retired on 14 Mar 1956 in the rank of AVM.

 

James Burney BARRETT (16016)

He entered the RAF College in 1920, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Soccer.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1921 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1922.  He retired on 23 Apr 1943 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

Died in the Westminster Hospital on 16 Jan 1954.

George Christopher Bernard BERNARD SMITH (16025)

He entered the RAF College in 1920, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Athletics and Rugby.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1921 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1922.  He retired on 6 Jun 1926 in the rank of Fg Off.  However he was recalled to service on 1 Sep 1939, relinquishing his commission on 10 Dec 1941 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

 

David William Frederick BONHAM CARTER (16027) CB, DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1920, was a member of A Sqn.  He also represented the college in Soccer.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1921 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1922.  He retired on 27 Feb 1953 in the rank of A/Cdre.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

William Arthur Darville BROOK (16029) CB, CBE

He entered the RAF College in 1920, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1921 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1922.  He was killed in a flying accident on 17 Aug 1953 in the rank of AVM.

It was announced that he would assume the post of Vice Chief of the Air Staff from September 1953 in the rank of Air Marshal.  However, shortly before taking up his new appointment, he was killed.  At the time he had been undertaking a jet conversion course at the Bomber Command Jet Conversion flight, RAF Coningsby and as part of this was carrying out a solo exercise in a Meteor.  Near Stafford his aircraft was seen to suddenly turn and dive into a haystack, the haystack was set alight, the aircraft disintegrated and AVM Brook was killed instantly.  The coroner returned a verdict of death by misadventure as no technical fault could be found, but was he possibly a victim of the Meteor’s design fault, subsequently discovered to be the cause of a number of crashes throughout its service career.

John Redvers BROWN (21038)

He entered the RAF College in 1920, was a member of A Sqn.  He also represented the college in Athletics and ?.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1921 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1922.  He retired on 7 Feb 1955 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He transferred to the Equipment Branch.

Gerard COMBE (16033) CB

He entered the RAF College in 1920, was a member of A Sqn.  He also represented the college in Rugby.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1921 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1922.  He retired on 1 Apr 1955 in the rank of AVM.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Thomas Joseph DESMOND (16034)

He entered the RAF College in 1920, was a member of A Sqn.  He also represented the college in Athletics and Rugby.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1921 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1922.  He retired on 28 Jan 1950 in the rank of Gp Capt.

 

Colin Logan FALCONER (16032) CBE

He entered the RAF College in 1920, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.  He also represented the college in Athletics, Cricket and Rugby.  On graduating he was awarded the Sword of Honour.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1921 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1922.  He retired on 1 Apr 1949 in the rank of A/Cdre.

 

Miles Herbert GARNONS WILLIAMS (16040)

He entered the RAF College in 1920, was a member of B Sqn.  He also represented the college in Rugby.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1921 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1922.  He appears to have retired and his death was registered in Brecknock as occurring on xx xxx 1952 in the rank of Gp Capt.

 

George William GAY (16035)

He entered the RAF College in 1920, was a member of A Sqn.  He also represented the college in Boxing.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1921 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1922.  He retired on 26 Sep 1946 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

 

Charles William GORE (11074) OBE

He entered the RAF College in 1920, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl, he also represented the college in Athletics and Rugby.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1921 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1922.  He retired on 15 Oct 1956 in the rank of A/Cdre.

 

John Gosset HAWTREY (16041) CBE

He entered the RAF College in 1920, was a member of A Sqn.  He also represented the college in Athletics.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1921 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1922.  He died in service on 26 Oct 1954 in the rank of AVM.

He had been serving as AOC, Iraq at RAF Habbaniya and died in a motor accident at San Repio in Italy, whilst he was travelling back from Iraq at the end of his tour as AOC.  He is buried in Cimitero Civile, Bordighera, Italy.

Noel Cecil HAYTER HAMES ()

He entered the RAF College in 1920, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Athletics.  On graduating he was awarded the R M Groves Memorial Prize.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1921 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1922.  He was killed in action on 21 Mar 1925 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was flying DH9A, E8792 of No 27 Sqn on a bombing aid when he was forced to land in hostile territory, during which his machine was completely wrecked. He was killed instantly but Fg Off Dashwood fell into the hands of friendly Guri Khel, unfortunately he died of his injuries shortly afterwards.

Ernest Vair Sleigh LACEY ()

He entered the RAF College in 1920 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1921 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1922.  He was killed in a flying accident on 24 Nov 1931 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He was killed whilst flying a Moth of the RAF Kenley station flight when it collided with a Bulldog of No 23 Sqn over Kenley.

Malcolm Bruce MACKAY (16021)

He entered the RAF College in 1920 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1921 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1922.  He retired on 2 May 1950 in the rank of Gp Capt.

 

Roland Artihur Ross MANGLES (16023)

He entered the RAF College in 1920, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Rugby.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1921 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1922.  He retired on 27 Sep 1948 in the rank of Gp Capt.

 

Sir George Holroyd MILLS (16015) GCB, DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1920, was a member of B Sqn.  He also represented the college in Athletics and Cricket.  On graduating he was awarded the Abdy Gerrard Fellows Memorial Prize.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1921 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1922.  He retired on 18 Sep 1962 in the rank of ACM.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Frederick George Stewart MITCHELL (16028) CB, CBE

He entered the RAF College in 1920, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1921 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1922.  He retired on 29 Jul 1958 in the rank of AVM.

He transferred to the Technical Branch.

Rupert William PONTIFEX ()

He entered the RAF College in 1920, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.  He also represented the college in Cricket and Rugby.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1921 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1922.  He was killed on active service on 18 Apr 1925 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was killed whilst flying Bristol fighter, F4961 of No 6 Sqn, which crashed in flames whilst bombing. He is buried in Ma'asker Al Raschid RAF Cemetery.  His crewman, AC2 E E Barber was also killed.

Arthur Pethick REVINGTON (16019) CB, CBE

He entered the RAF College in 1920 and was a member of A Sqn .

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1921 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1922.  He retired on 4 Jan 1954 in the rank of A/Cdre.

 

Frank Charles Thorn ROWE (16026)

He entered the RAF College in 1920, was a member of B Sqn.  He also represented the college in Cricket and Soccer.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1921 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1922.  He retired on 14 Aug 1933 in the rank of Flt Lt.  However he was recalled to service on 1 Sep 1939, reverting to the retired list on 14 Nov 1945 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

 

Gordon Carruthers SHEPHERD (16042) BA He entered the RAF College in 1920, was a member of A Sqn.  He also represented the college in Athletics. He was commissioned on 27 Feb 1922 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 21 Mar 1922.  He retired on 9 Jun 1954 in the rank of Gp Capt.  

Cecil Montague Oakes Osborn SPRINGFIELD ()

He entered the RAF College in 1920 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1921 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1922.  He retired on 7 May 1924 in the rank of Plt Off.

 

Cecil John STONE ()

He entered the RAF College in 1920, was a member of A Sqn.  He also represented the college in Athletics, Cricket and Soccer.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1921 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1922.  He relinquished his permanent commission in the RAF in order to join the Army on 12 Jun 1929 in the rank of Fg Off.

 

Ralph Ashinhurst Bird STONE (16031)

He entered the RAF College in 1920 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1921 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1922.  He retired on 13 Dec 1946 in the rank of Gp Capt.

 

Reginald Newnham WAITE (16017) CB, CBE

He entered the RAF College in 1920, was a member of B Sqn.  He also represented the college in Shooting.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1921 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1922.  He retired on 19 Sep 1953 in the rank of A/Cdre.

 

Robert Darley WHELAN ()

He entered the RAF College in 1920, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Athletics and Rugby.

He was commissioned on 20 Dec 1921 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 24 Jan 1922.  He was killed in a flying accident on 3 Dec 1927 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was killed in a flying accident at Enfield flying Fox, J7941 of No 12 Sqn.
