He was the son of Air Chief Marshal Sir Patrick Hine, was educated at Haileybury School and then read history at St Andrews University.

He flew 158 combat patrols in Iraq involving over 500 hours of flying in 1999/2000

After leaving the RAF began a second career as a schoolteacher, teaching history at Oundle and died from cancer
