In 1943 planning for the invasion of North-West Europe began in earnest and whilst the main focus was on the preparatory operations, actual landings and the follow-up campaigns, thought was also given to the disarmament and disposal of captured personnel and equipment. As a result, a dedicated Air Disarmament Staff was set up in early 1944. The first problem to overcome was whether dedicated units should be formed or whether to rely on the personnel operating in the area to undertake the disarmament process.
