No 39 Squadron left on 21 January 1928 and Spittlegate became home to No 3 Flying Training School.  At around the same time the station changed its name to RAF Grantham and lost its independent status as a RAF Station, now being commanded by OC, No 3 FTS.

When No 3 FTS moved to South Cerney, a SHQ was re-established on 13 July 1937
