This was formed as No 38 (Airborne Forces) Group on 11 October 1943 from No 38 Wing at RAF Netheravon within Tactical Air Force, Fighter Command.  It was transferred to the control of HQ Allied Expeditionary Air Force on 15 November 1943.

It disbanded on 18 November 1983 by being absorbed into No 1 Group.

It reformed on 1 November 1992 at High Wycombe and took over responsibility for air transport and air-to-air refuelling from No 1 Group.

It disbanded on 1 April 2000.
