He was commissioned on 14 Apr 1953 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 12 May 1953. He retired at his own request on 25 Jul 1975 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was commissioned into the Secretarial Branch but had previously held a commission as a National Service officer from 28 Jul 1949.

Originally commissioned in the Equipment Branch but transferred to GD Branch as a pilot but was killed during training whilst flying in Vampire T Mk 11, XE866 of No 4 Flying Training School Sqn, which crashed near Hathersedge in Derbyshire whilst making a controlled descent through cloud.  He is buried in Worksop Cemetery.

He was a student at the CFS and was killed whilst flying in Sycamore HR Mk 14, XL820 of the Central Flying School which crashed after the blades and rotorhead detached during a demonstration of a state  known as 'vortex ring'.  Details of his burial have not been ascertained.
