Born in Winnipeg; he was educated at University of Manitoba and enlisted in the Royal Canadian Engineers, being commissioned in to the 8th Battalion; London Regiment, transferring to the RFC in 1917 as a Signals specialist.

He awarded his knighthood for services rendered during the planning for Operation Overlord, the invasion of Normandy in 1944. Following his retirement from the RAF he became Director of Operations for British Overseas Airways Corporation from 1945 to 1956.  He was a member of the Air Transport Electronic Council, UK in 1958.
