Citation for the award of the Bar to the Air Force Cross

"HOWE, Thomas Edward Barham, F/L

For consistent and exceptionally good work at the Air Pilotage School, Andover.

For the past two and a half years, this officer has, practically without assistance, carried out all meteorological flying at that station.  This work consists of going to 17,000 feet twice daily, morning and evening, to take readings at various altitudes.

By consistently sound and good flying and by careful navigation, he has carried out this work regularly.  On one occasion when he failed to return, he made a good landing in a field in the dark and returned safely the following day.

He has also carried out a considerable amount of night flying.  The consistent and hazardous work performed by this officer is fully deserving of recognition."

The back of this says that the Rear Admiral was Sir Arthur Bromley.   It was probably taken when father was on troop reception duties in the 1940s.
