The son of AVM G Harcourt-Smith, Sir David entered the RAF College at Cranwell in 1950, where he attained the rank of Flight Cadet Sergeant.
Since retiring from the RAF he as acted as an aviation consultant as well as holding the Chairmanship of Chelworth Defence Ltd from 1991.
