Another of 'Trenchard's Brats', he was awarded a cadetship at the RAF College, Cranwell, where he represented the College at Hockey, attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt and was awarded the Humanities Prize.

Recommendation for the award of Commander of the Order of the British Empire (not awarded)

"GRIERSON, Colin McKay, A/A/C (Royal Air Force) - Department of Chief of the Air Staff, Directorate of Policy (General).

This officer is Deputy Director of Policy (General) and has been responsible for organising and running the new directorate for two months, pending the posting of a new director.  He has also undertaken the briefing for the purpose of meetings of the Chiefs of Staff and Vice-Chiefs of Staff and has worked exceptionally long hours over the whole period.  He has done work of a very high order."
