He was killed when Consolidated C-87 Liberator Express 41-11706, operated by
Consairways under contract to Air Transport Command, flew into a 750-foot high
hilltop on Florida Island on approach to Carney Field, whilst travelling from
Tarawa to Guadalcanal. Initially he was buried in the US Army-Navy-Marine
Cemetery at Lunga but was later re-interred in .
