Born in Australia, he attained the rank of Flight Cadet Sergeant at Cranwell.

As a flight commander in No 49 Squadron, he was involved in Operation 'Grapple' (British H-bomb tests in the Pacific).

After retiring from the RAF he held a number of offices in a wide range of organisations including Specialist Air Adviser to the House of Commons Defence Committee (1985 - 92), Chairman, Ex-Forces Fellowship Centre (1987 - 93) and Director-General, British-Australia Society.
