He possibly suffered an injury in an accident in 1923 and after recovering was found unfit to continue flying as a pilot, resulting in his transfer to the Stores Branch?

Recommendation for the award of the Air Force Cross.

BROWNE, James Stark, F/L - Air Force Cross - awarded as per London Gazette dated 12 July 1920. Recommendation by Air Vice-Marshal W.G.H. Salmond dated 3 April 1920.

" For marked ability, keenness and devotion to duty displayed during flight from Europe to Egypt in August 1919.  This officer was in charge of a flight."
