1   The heading gives the officers' final RAF rank and initials only, unless he was knighted

2    All Christian names are shown here, names in (brackets) indicate a normally unused name. Names shown in '' indicate a commonly used name or nickname.

3    This shows the officer's date of birth, date of retirement and date of death (where known).  When a date of retirement is missing, this usually indicates the officer died or was killed whilst on the active list.

4   This shows Honours, Awards and Decorations with dates where known.  Honours shown in brackets indicate an earlier award later superseded by a higher level award in the same category.  When the full date of award is known, this is given, if two dates are shown with one in [brackets] then the first is the effective date of the award whilst the date in [brackets] is the announcement date in the London Gazette.

5   This section shows promotion dates in either the Royal Navy or Army, prior to the officer's transfer to the RAF.  All dates are substantive unless otherwise stated.  Dates in [brackets] indicate seniority or backdating of any promotion.

(B) or Bt = Brevet

(T) = Temporary

(P) = On Probation

(G) = Graded as for purposes of pay and allowances

(H) = Honorary

(WS) = War Substantive

When the word 'Retained' is shown, this means that the officer was retired in a substantive rank, but was permitted to retain a higher acting or temporary rank on retirement.

7   Appointments shown italics are for non-RAF appointments.

8    Appointments in normal type are RAF appointments.  Dates shown are usually the appointment date shown in the Air Force Lists.  It should not be assumed that an officer relinquished one command the day before taking over another.  He would sometimes need to travel considerable distances between appointments.  He may take leave between appointments, undertake some form of refresher training or initial preparation for a new appointment
