Michael Armitage was one of 'Trenchard's Brats' who entered the RAF as an apprentice at RAF Halton.  He started at Halton straight after schooling at Newport Grammar School on the Isle of Wight.  However, he was one of those apprentices who won scholarships to the RAF College at Cranwell on completion of their apprenticeship.  At Cranwell, he attained the rank of Senior Flight Cadet.  On graduation, he was posted to No 28 Sqn in Hong Kong.
