This was formed on 11 October1925 at St Michael Street, Oxford, moving to Manor Road, Oxford on 25 February 1926. It was attached to RAF Manston from 6 to 19 July 1926. Flying began on 10 January 1928 at RAF Upper Heyford.

It was closed on 3 September 1939 but was re-opened on 8 October 1940 at Manor Road, Oxford in No 54 Group, parented by RAF Abingdon.
From April 1941 it was allocated a single Tiger Moth at Abingdon. It ceased to have its own aircraft on 14 December 1945 but 4 Tiger Moths were added to the strength of No 3 EFTS for its use but these were deleted on 12 January 1946 and it regained its own aircraft which were operated from RAF Oakington from 16 January 1946. It was transferred to No 62 Group on 15 May 1946 and by September had moved to Shellingford, with further moves occurring on 20 December 1946 to Abingdon, 14 April 1949 to Kidlington and 12 January 1959 to Little Rissington.
It was transferred to No 25 Group when it moved to Little Rissington and on 1 July 1968 to No 22 Group. Control was taken over by the RAF College on 1 November 1971 and on 26 September 1975 it returned to Abingdon followed by a move to RAF Benson on 31 July 1992. On 26 November 1995 it took on the parenting of No 6 AEF after which both units re-equipped with the Grob Tutor T Mk 1.
