Casualties   January   December 1937


This section covers RAF personnel killed between 1 January and 31 December 1937.  The information has been gleaned from a variety of sources including the Commonwealth War Graves registers, Air Force Lists, Flight magazine and a variety of other publications and books.  Entries in italics indicates that exact confirmation of these details have not yet been possible.

He was killed flying Vincent, K4692 of No 47 Sqn when he hit some trees whilst taking off from Pibor Post in the Sudan.  His passenger, Capt Leslie Reid Warton, King's Dragoon Guards was seriously injured and died later the same day whilst his crewman, AC2 Thomas Luke Carpenter was uninjured.

He was killed whilst flying as second pilot in Singapore III, K3594 of No 205 Sqn when the aircraft was swung in order to avoid running aground during a night take off from the Jahore Straits and wing dug in.  The  rest of the crew were only slightly injured, these being, Sqn Ldr Albert Wentworth Bates (1st pilot), LAC William Trevor Davies, AC1 Joe Lee, AC1 Leonard Frank Wilkins, and AC1 Alexander Thomas Edward Daniells.  He is buried in Kranji Military Cemetery.

VARDON, GERALD ARTHUR (Lt, RN)

He was killed in a mid air collision with Swordfish, K5938 whilst flying Swordfish, K5947, both belonging to No 825 Sqn, HMS Glorious.  They had been carrying out a practice mass torpedo attack when one aircraft flew across the nose of the other.   Vardon's aircraft dived vertically into the sea.  Also killed  was Tel. Bert Overal RN.

He was killed whilst flying Blackburn Shark, K5619 of No 821 Sqn, HMS Courageous.  He had been on a Navex over the Mediterranean when he reported a failing engine.  An extensive search of the area failed to find any trace of the aircraft or its crew, which included Lt. R. W. MacDonald RN and Tel W. H Currie RN.

He was killed flying Hawker Nimrod, K2913 of No. 800 (Fleet Fighter) Sqn, HMS Courageous.  The squadron was forming up to fly to Southampton, when he stalled on take off and spun into the sea near Bembridge, Isle of Wight.

He was killed whilst flying in Fairey Gordon, K2741 of No 14 Sqn when it collided with another Gordon, K2618 whilst in formation.   The pilot of K2471 Flt Lt Michael Arthur Aylmer, successfully abandoned the aircraft uninjured. The other aircraft was landed safely at Amman.  He is buried in Ramleh War Cemetery.

He was killed whilst flying as the crew member of Wellington prototype, K4049 on a test flight from the Aeroplane and Armament Experimental Establishment at Martlesham Heath, when the elevators broke off and the aircraft crashed at Brightwell in Suffolk.   The aircraft was being flown by Flt Lt Maurice Hare, who suffered slight injuries.

Two Audax aircraft of No 4 Sqn, K2031 and K1997 collided near Wanborough, both pilots being able to abandon the aircraft by parachute.  AC1 Hall was the gunner in one of these aircraft and he was unable to leave it, being killed in the ensuing crash.  His pilot was Plt Off G V Smither, who was uninjured.
