Casualties - January - December 1938


This section covers RAF personnel killed between 1 January and 31 December 1938.  The information has been gleaned from a variety of sources including the Commonwealth War Graves registers, Air Force Lists, Flight magazine and a variety of other publications and books.  Entries in italics indicated that exact confirmation of these details have not yet been confirmed.

He was killed flying Audax, K5126 of No 10 FTS when he hit a tree whilst low flying and crashed at Maer Hall, near Whitmore, Shropshire.

He was killed whilst flying as a passenger in Moth, K1893 of No 8 Sqn when the wings broke off during aerobatics at Mansur, near Khormaksar, Aden.  His pilot, APO M H B Davies was also killed.  He is buried in Maala Cemetery.

He was killed whilst flying as the crewman in Wallace, K6057 of No 6 Armament Training Camp when he dived into the ground near Holworth in Dorset having stalled in cloud.  The pilot, Plt Off G B Andrews was also killed.

GASKELL, GEOFFREY EDWIN

He was killed whilst flying Gloster Gladiator, K8014 of No 65 Sqn when he collided when another Gladiator of the same squadron, K7940, piloted by Plt Off Roland Robert Stanford Tuck.  Plt Off Tuck was slightly injured but managed to abandon his aircraft safely near Uckfield, Sussex, he latter went on to become one of the leading fighter pilots both during and after the Battle of Britain before being shot down and captured.

He was killed in a flying accident when he flew into the side of Helderberg Mountain near Somerset West, Cape Province, South Africa , whilst flying Hawker Osprey, K5747 of No. 716 (Catapult) Flt, attached to HMS Amphion of the 6th Cruiser Squadron.  Able Seaman Leslie V. Hammond, RN was also killed.

He was under training as a pilot for the RAF when he was killed whilst under instruction in Tiger Moth G-ADHW of No 1 E & RFTS.  His aircraft was in collision with Gloster Gauntlet II, K5303 of No 66 Sqn, flown by Plt Off L R Helps as it emerged from cloud near Smallwood, Hertfordshire.  His instructor, Mr Theodore Quentin Smith and Plt Off Helps were also killed.

HELPS, LEONARD RENE

He was killed whilst flying Gloster Gauntlet II, K5303 of No 66 Sqn when he collided with Tiger Moth G-ADHW of No 1 E & RFTS as he emerged from cloud near Smallwood, Hertfordshire.  The instructor in the Tiger Moth, Mr Theodore Quentin Smith and his pupil, Mr Brian William Grieves were also killed.  Mr Grieves was under training for the Royal Air Force.

He was killed flying in Anson, K6277 of No 51 Sqn, which hit trees on a hill as it was descending through cloud on a night navigation exercise at Kingsclere, near Basingstoke.  The pilot, Sgt Donald William Mansbridge was severely injured and two others, Act Plt Off Cecil Wardman Poulter and AC" Ronald Harry Price were slightly injured.

He was the pilot of Audax, K5210 of No 11 FTS and was killed at Ufford, Lincolnshire, when his engine cut during a forced landing practice and the aircraft stalled resulting in a spin into the ground.  His passenger, APO Peter Robert Burton-Gyles was slightly injured.

He was killed whilst flying Swordfish, K5984 collided with Swordfish, K5974 at around 200 ft as both aircraft were making a final turn during a practice attack.  The crew members of the other aircraft were unhurt. He was the sole occupant of K5984.

He is presumed to have been killed whilst flying Wellesley, K7734 of the Long Range Development Unit, which disappeared on a flight around the UK and is assumed to have crashed into the North Sea. Bolingbroke was uninjured whilst the pilot of K4445, APO Littler was slightly injured.  He is buried in Ismailia War Memorial Cemetery.

He was killed whilst flying as the crewman in Hawker Hind, K6643 of No 83 Sqn, which collided over RAF Scampton with Hind, K6753 of the same squadron, crashing nearby.  The pilot of Scoberg's aircraft was also killed as was one other person in K6753.

He was killed whilst carrying out a night navigation exercise in Anson, K6270 of No 233 Sqn.  The aircraft is presumed to have suffered engine failure and an attempt was made to ditch in the North Sea near the East Dudgeon Light Vessel, but the aircraft burst into flames.

He was killed whilst flying (in) Audax, K7307 of No 9 FTS, which stalled and spun in at Hullavington following an engine failure.  The other occupant, APO J R Vincent was severely injured in an accident and died later the same day in the Cottage Hospital at Malmesbury.

He was killed whilst carrying out a night navigation exercise in Anson, K6270 of No 233 Sqn.  The aircraft is presumed to have suffered engine failure and an attempt was made to ditch in the North Sea near the East Dudgeon Light Vessel, but the aircraft burst into flames.

He was severely injured whilst flying De Havilland Dragon, G-ACHX on returning from an Anti-Aircraft Co-operation flight to Croydon at around 21:30 on 25 Apr 1938 when his starboard engine failed and crashed in Purley.  His wireless operator was also injured but Byar died of his injuries at Purley and District War Memorial Hospital three days later.

He was killed in a flying accident whilst flying an aircraft (Magister, L5948?) of No 139 Sqn near Godmanchester, Huntingdonshire.  His crewman, Plt Off C J C Lee was also killed.

He was killed in a flying accident whilst flying an aircraft of  No 144 Sqn at Hemswell.  His crew comprising, Cpl D S Wissett and AC1 W Dodds were also killed.  He is buried in Harpswell (St Chad) Churchyard.

He was killed whilst flying as a crew member of Vildebeest, K2942 of No 100 Sqn when it collided with K2941, another Vildebeest of the same unit on the Seletar bombing range.  Another member of the crew, AC W J Ashton was also killed but the pilot, Fg Off Frank Howard Roberts, was rescued, whilst the crew of the other aircraft were uninjured.
