Joined the RAF as an apprentice at RAF Halton in 1949/50?, he was awarded a scholarship to the RAF College at Cranwell, graduating in 1954 having attained the rank of Senior Flight Cadet.  He is the longest serving Commandant of the Central Flying School and flew 105 different types of aircraft during his tour.  Following retirement he has worked in the Health Service in various capacities his most recent being Chief Executive, North Western Regional Area Health Authority (1990-94).
