In April 1959 he was captain of one of the three Vulcans which attended the first World Congress of Flight in Las Vegas.  Retired at his own request.

Citation for the award of Queen's Commendation for Valuable Service in the Air

“Flight Lieutenant Graham Trevor SMEATON (3044746), Royal Air Force, No. 617 Squadron.

For his outstanding devotion to duty, courage and flying skill in successfully landing his Vulcan aircraft after the-entire nose-wheel bogie had become detached from it.”
