RAF Regiment Wing HQs and other units


No 1 Wing

Formed by re-numbering No 1300 Wing at Hamburg on 21 August 1947, it moved to Fassberg in November 1947, Uetersen in November 1948.  On 1 February 1949 it was under the control of No 85 Group and controlled the following: -

On 29 November 1949 the Wing HQ, together with the three Squadrons, returned to Fassberg, where it was transferred from No 85 Group to HQ BAFO on 1 May 1950.  It disbanded on 1 November 1953, but was reformed immediately as No 1 (LAA) Wing at Fassberg, controlling: -

It moved to Gutersloh on 24 August 1956, where it was reduced to a 'number-plate' basis on 30 September 1957.

No 2 Wing

Formed in No 38 Group at Upavon on 1 January 1948, it disbanded there on 16 March 1951. 

It re-formed at Yatesbury on 9 July 1951, and moved to Uetersen under the control of HQ 2nd TAF on 8 August controlling:-

It moved to Wildenrath on 21 February 1952, being transferred to No 2 Group losing Nos 22 and 23 Squadrons  the same day, but gaining No 54 Squadron from No 4 Wing on 1 March 1952. 

It disbanded on 1 November 1953, but was reformed immediately as No 2 (LAA) Wing at Wildenrath, controlling: -

It disbanded on 1 January 1958.


No 3 Wing

Formed at Yatesbury on 20 August 1951, and moved to El Hamra, Egypt on 17 September 1951 controlling:-

It disbanded on 15 September 1953, but reformed immediately at Abu Sueir as No 3 (LAA) Wing controlling:

Functional and administrative control was transferred from RAF Abu Sueir to HQ No 205 Group through RAF Abu Sueir on 8 October 1954.  It moved to Nicosia on 11 January 1956, where its constituent units were redesignated as follows: -

It moved to Akrotiri on 15 March 1956 and to Catterick in January 1975.  It took part in Operation Corporate in 1982 and Operation Granby in 1990.  It disbanded on ?

No 4 Wing

Formed by re-numbering No 1304 Wing at CeIle on 21 August 1947, and on 1 February 1949 it was located at Fassberg, under the control of No 46 Group and controlled the following: -

It moved to Luneberg in 1949, and on 14 October 1949 it was transferred from No 46 Group to No 85 Group.  No 54 Squadron was transferred to No 2 Wing on 1 March 1952 the Wing moved to Jever on 25 March 1952. 

It disbanded on 1 November 1953, but was reformed immediately as No 4 (LAA) Wing at Jever, controlling: -

Further moves followed, to Laarbruch 31 May 1955 and Oldenburg on 1 January 1956, where it absorbed No 51 Wing, disbanding there on 30 September 1957.  It re-formed at Catterick on 3 December 1973, re-locating to Bruggen in January 1974 and Wildenrath in June 1978, taking part in Operation Corporate in 1982 and Operation Desert Storm in 1991.  It disbanded on ?


No 5 Wing

It formed at Yatesbury on 10 September 1951, controlling:-

It embarked for Egypt on 21 October 1951 destined for El Hamra.

It disbanded on 15 September1953, but reformed immediately at Deversoir as No 5 (LAA) Wing controlling:

It moved to Habbaniya on 25 November 1954, where it was transferred to the functional and administrative control of AHQ Iraq through RAF Habbaniya, where it disbanded on 1 February 1956, but reformed the same day at RAF Mafraq, comprising: -

It moved to Nicosia on 22 January 1957, Akrotiri in October and Nicosia in July 1958, where it disbanded on 1 January 1964. 

It reformed at Bicester on 1 April 1967, moving to Wittering in October 1970 and Hullavington on 11 October 1982, disbanding on 31 July 1990.

No 6 Wing

Formed by re-numbering No 1306 Wing at Gatow on 21 August 1947, under the control of No 46 Group.  It moved to Wahn on 1 February 1949, being transferred to No 2 Group, and at this time controlled the following: -

It moved to Celle on 12 September 1949, where it was transferred to No 83 Group in 1952, and disbanded on 1 November 1953, but was reformed immediately as No 6 (LAA) Wing at Celle, controlling: -

It was transferred from No 83 Group to No 2 Group on 15 October 1956, and disbanded on 30 September 1957.  It re-formed at West Raynham on 1 July 1983, taking part in Operation Desert Storm in 1991 and disbanding in ?

No 7 Wing

Formed at Yatesbury on 1 October 1951, and moved to Wunstorf on 29 October controlling:-

It disbanded on 1 November 1953, but was reformed immediately as No 7 (LAA) Wing at Wunstorf, controlling: -

It disbanded on 30 September 1957.


No 8 Wing

Formed at Yatesbury on 12 November1951, it moved to El Hamra on 11 December 1951 on 29 October controlling:-

It disbanded on 15 September1953, but reformed immediately at El Hamra as No 8 (LAA) Wing controlling:

Functional and administrative control was transferred from RAF El Hamra to HQ No 205 Group through RAF El Hamra on 8 October 1954.  It moved to Kasfareet on 1 October 1955, Abu Sueir on 1 December 1955, where it was disbanded on 1 February 1956, but was immediately reformed, comprising: -

 It moved to Nicosia on 1 April 1956, disbanding on 16 November 1960.


No 9 Wing

Formed at Yatesbury on 1 September 1951, and moved to El Hamra, Egypt on 1 October 1951 controlling:-

It moved from El Hamra to Shallufa on 14 January 1952, where it disbanded on 1 August 1953, by which time it had become No 9 (Rifle) Wing.


No 16 Wing

Formed by re-numbering No 1316 Wing at Gutersloh on 21 August 1947, it moved to Sundern in No 2 Group on 1 February 1949 at which point it controlled the following: -

It moved to Gutersloh in May 1950 and disbanded on 1 November 1953, but was reformed immediately as No 16 (LAA) Wing at Gutersloh, controlling: -

 It moved to Laarbruch on 21 March 1955, where functional and administrative control was transferred from HQ, No 2 Group, to HQ, No 83 Group on 14 April 1956, disbanding on 1 January 1958.

No 19 Wing

This was formed by re-numbering No 1319 Wing at Ramleh on  8 June 1947, moving to Amman in January 1948, where following the withdrawal of British Forces from Palestine, control was transferred from AHQ Levant to AHQ Iraq on 21 May 1948, and on 1 August 1950, its policy was revised as follows: -

  1. To provide a HQ for the co-ordination of operations and training of RAF Regiment Units in Iraq Command (excluding RAF Levies Iraq)

It was disbanded on 20 July 1953, but re-formed at Kabrit in No 205 Group, MEAF on 15 September 1953 as No 19 (LAA) Wing controlling:

Returning to Amman on 1 May 1955 in AHQ Iraq, it disbanded on 1 February 1956, but was immediately reformed at Amman to control: -

It moved to Mafraq on 22 January 1957 and to Habbaniya on 31 May 1957, where it disbanded on 15 June 1957.


No 20 (Rifle)/(Field) Wing

This was formed as No 20 (Rifle) Wing by re-numbering No 1320 Wing at Ein Shemer on 8 June 1947, but following the withdrawal of British Forces from Palestine, it moved to RAF El Hamra on 27 April 1948 and then to Khormaksar, Aden on 3 May 1948.  On 1 August 1949, and on 1 August 1950, its policy was revised as follows: -

  1. To provide a HQ for the command and control of RAF Regiment Units in Aden (excluding Aden Protectorate Levies)

It was retitled No 20 (Field) Wing on 20 April 1954 with control being transferred from RAF Khormaksar to HQ British Forces, Aden through RAF Khormaksar on 8 October 1954, and disbanded on 30 June 1957.


No 21 Wing

This was formed in No 12 Group at Pembrey on 1 January 1952, to control the following: -

It moved to Ouston on 10 September 1952 and disbanded on 10 October 1953.


No 25 Wing

Formed at Hawarden on 9 June 1952, in No 63 Group, to control the following: -

It moved to Luneburg in July 1952, where it was transferred to No 83 Group.  On 1 May 1953 it moved to Geilenkirchen, where it disbanded on 1 November 1953, but was reformed immediately as No 25 (LAA) Wing at Geilenkirchen, controlling: -

 It disbanded on 1 January 1958.


No 33 Wing

Formed at Innsworth in Home Command on 20 October 1952, and disbanded on 31 December 1953, but was reformed immediately as No 38 (LAA) Wing at Innsworth, controlling: -

Functionally controlled by HQ Home Command through AOC, Record Office, who also exercised administrative control through the OC, RAF Innsworth.  On 8 November 1955, the two squadron mentioned above were redesignated as: -

At the same time it also assumed control of No 48 (LAA) Squadron at RAF Rudloe Manor.  On 1 March 1958 it converted to the 'Field' role and moved to Felixstowe, in No 22 Group, on 26 January 1960.  It moved to Upwood on 26 July 1962, where it was transferred from Signals Command to Transport Command on 1 December 1962.  On 23 March 1964, it moved to the RAF Regiment Depot, Catterick and then to Wildenrath in July 1973, Laarbruch in March 1976 and Gutersloh in August 1980.  It took part in Operation Granby in 1990 and disbanded in ?

No 38 Wing

Formed at Hawarden in No 63 Group on 8 September 1952, it moved to Luneburg in 2nd TAF on 8 October 1952, and disbanded on 1 November 1953, but was reformed immediately as No 38 (LAA) Wing at Luneburg, controlling: -

 It moved to Wahn on 9 May 1954 and later to Wildenrath, where it was reduced to a 'number-plate' basis on 31 May 1957.  It appears to have been reformed at Felixstowe between 1957 and 1961.

No 51 Wing

Formed at Hawarden in No 63 Group on 27 October 1952, comprising Nos 168 and 199 LAA Squadrons.  It arrived at Luneburg in No 83 Group on 9 May 1953, and disbanded on 1 November 1953, but was reformed immediately as No 51 (LAA) Wing at Luneburg, controlling: -

It moved to Oldenburg on 9 May 1954, where it re-numbered as No 4 Wing on 1 January 1956.


No 55 Wing

Formed in No 63 Group at Hawarden on 21 July 1952, to control the following: -

It deployed to Luneburg in No 83 Group, 2nd TAF on 26 August 1952 and moved to Bruggen, still in No 83 Group on 1 July 1953, and disbanded on 1 November 1953, but was reformed immediately as No 55 (LAA) Wing at Bruggen, controlling: -

 It disbanded on 1 January 1958.


RAF Regiment Wing

This was formed in about August 1943 at Hammamet under the control of North-west African Tactical Air Forces, no further details.


No 1300 Wing

Formed at HQ, No 121 Airfield as No 1300 (Mobile) Wing in No 83 Group on 1 April 1944, it moved to the continent on D + 2  and disbanded on 15 February 1945. 

It re-formed as No 1300 Wing in BAFO on 1 October 1945, moving to Altona Hamburg in December 1945.  It was disbanded by being re-numbered No 1 Wing on 21 August 1947.


No 1301 Wing

Formed at HQ, No 122 Airfield in No 83 Group in April 1944, it moved to the continent on D + 9 and disbanded at Eggebek on 15 February 1945.  It re-formed in BAFO on 1 October 1945 and disbanded on 30 June 1946.


No 1302 Wing

Formed at HQ, No 124 Airfield in No 83 Group in April 1944, it moved to the continent on D + 2 and disbanded at Lubeck on 15 February 1945.  It re-formed in BAFO on 1 October 1945 and disbanded on 6 March 1946.


No 1303 Wing

Formed at HQ, No 125 Airfield in No 83 Group in April 1944, it moved to the continent on D + 9 and disbanded at Sylt on 15 February 1945.  It re-formed in BAFO on 1 October 1945 and disbanded on 15 April 1946.


No 1304 Wing

Formed at HQ, No 126 (RCAF) Airfield as No 1304 (Mobile) Wing in No 83 Group on 1 April 1944, and moved to the continent on D + 1, disbanding on 15 February 1945.  It re-formed as No 1304 Wing on 1 October 1945, moving to Celle in December.  It disbanded by being re-numbered No 4 Wing on 21 August 1947.

No 1305 Wing

Formed at HQ, No 127 Airfield in No 83 Group in April 1944, it moved to the continent on D + 1 and disbanded at Eggebek on 15 February 1945.  It re-formed in BAFO on 1 October 1945 and disbanded on 6 March 1946.

No 1306 Wing

Formed at HQ, No 128 Airfield as No 1306 (Mobile) Wing in No 83 Group on 1 April 1944 at Odiham, it moved to B-10 Plumetot in France on D + 10, B-34 Thomer Sur Sogne in August and then made a further move to B-66 Assent, Belgium.  In October it was located at B-84 De Rips, B-80 Volkel and then in November it relocated to B-88 Heesch November 1944, where it remained until disbanding on an unknown date.  It re-formed in BAFO on 1 October 1945 moving to Gatow until  disbanding by being re­numbered No 6 Wing on 21 August 1947.

No 1307 Wing

Formed at HQ, No 129 Airfield in No 83 Group in April 1944, it moved to the continent on D + 11 but was returned to the UK at Middle Wallop on 16 October 1944 in order to prepare for being transferred to ACSEA in December.  Having served at Meiktila, it disbanded at Saigon on 1 March 1946.


No 1308 Wing

Formed at HQ, No 143 Airfield in No 83 Group (No 143 Wing from 12 May 1944) in April 1944, and moved to the continent on D + 11 but was returned to the UK at Middle Wallop on 16 October 1944 in order to prepare for being transferred to ACSEA in December.  It moved to Burma in March 1945 and Java in  October, disbanding at Batavia on 14 May 1946.


No 1309 Wing

Formed at HQ, No 144 Airfield in No 83 Group (No 144 Wing from 15 May) in April 1944, and moved to the Concentration Area at Old Sarum on 22 Ma, arriving the continent on D + 2 and disbanded at Helmond on 15 February 1945.

It re-formed in BAFO on 1 October 1945 and disbanded on 19 March 1946.

No 1310 Wing

Formed at HQ, No 123 Airfield in No 84 Group in June 1944, it moved to the continent in August 1944 and disbanded on 15 February 1945.  It re-formed in BAFO on 1 October 1945 and disbanded at RAF Honington on 30 June 1946.

No 1311 Wing

Formed at HQ, No 130 Airfield in No 84 Group in June 1944, it moved to the continent in August 1944 and disbanded at Delmenhorst on 15 February 1945.  It re-formed in BAFO on 1 October 1945 and disbanded on 30 September 1946.


No 1312 Wing

Formed at HQ, No 131 (Polish) Airfield in No 84 Group in June 1944, it moved to the continent in August 1945 and disbanded at Grimbergen on 15 February 1945.

It re-formed in BAFO on 1 October 1945 and disbanded on 31 August 1946.

No 1313 Wing

Formed at HQ, No 132 (Norwegian) Airfield in No 84 Group in June 1944, it moved to the continent in August 1944 and disbanded at Gutersloh on 15 February 1945.  It re-formed in BAFO on 1 October 1945 and disbanded on 30 September 1946.

No 1314 Wing

Formed at HQ, No 133 (Polish) Airfield in No 84 Group in June 1944, it moved to the continent in August 1944 and disbanded on 15 February 1945.  It re-formed in BAFO on 1 October 1945 and disbanded on 30 June 1946.

No 1315 Wing

Formed at HQ, No 134 (Czech) Airfield in No 84 Group in June 1944, it moved to the continent in August 1944 and disbanded at Wahn  on 15 February 1945.  It re-formed in BAFO on 1 October 1945 and disbanded on 15 April 1946.


No 1316 Wing

Formed at HQ, No 135 Airfield in No 84 Group as No 1316 (Mobile) Wing on 1 April 1944, it moved to the continent in August 1944 and disbanded on 15 February 1945.  It re-formed in BAFO on 1 October 1945, moving to Sundern in December 1945 and disbanded by being re-numbered No 16 Wing on 21 August 1947.


No 1317 Wing

Formed at HQ, No 136 Airfield in No 84 Group in June 1944, it moved to the continent in July 1944 and disbanded at Gatow on 15 February 1945.  It re-formed in BAFO on 1 October 1945 and disbanded on 31 July 1946.


No 1318 Wing

Formed at HQ, No 146 Airfield in No 84 Group on 9 May 1944 at Needs Oar Point, with Nos 2759, 2845 and 2898 Squadrons RAF Regiment, moving to the continent on D + 2 but was returned to the UK (Fighter Command) on 16 October 1944 and was despatched to Norway as part of No 88 Group in 1945, disbanding at Oslo on 10 September 1945.


No 1319 Wing

Formed at Vasto in Italy on  9 March 1944, under the operational control of HQ, MATAF, administered by HQ, DAF.  It moved to Palestine in December 1945, arriving at Ramleh in June 1946, where it was disbanded by being re-numbered No 19 Wing on 8 June 1947.

No 1320 Wing

Formed at Portici in Italy 9th March 1944, under the operational control of HQ, MATAF, administered by No 3 RAF Base Area.  It moved to Austria in May 1945, Ein Shemer in March 1946 and was disbanded by being re-numbered No 20 Wing on 8 June 1947.

No 1321 Wing

Formed at Foggia in Italy April 1944, under the operational control of No 205 Group, but was transferred to the Balkan Air Force, and moved to Greece in October 1944.  It moved to Palestine in March 1945, disbanding at Ramleh on 25 November 1946.

No 1322 Wing

Formed at Foggia on 21 June 1944 under the control of No 205 Group, it disbanded in Naples in November 1944.


No 1323 Wing

Formed at Palel in India on 31 July 1944, it later served in Burma and Sumatra, disbanding at Medan on 30 March 1946.


No 1324 Wing

Formed at Imphal in India on 31 July 1944, it later served in Burma as part of No 906 Wing before moving to Malaya in September 1945, disbanding at Kallang on 1 March 1946.


No 1325 Wing

Formed at Agartala in India on 31 July 1944, it disbanded at Secunderabad on 1 March 1946.


No 1326 Wing

Formed at Chittagong in India on 31 July 1944, moving to Burma in October 1944, before moving to Penang in September 1945 and disbanded at Singapore on 1 April 1947 to permit the formation of the RAF Regiment (Malaya).

No 1327 Wing

Formed at Cox's Bazaar in Burma on 31 July 1944, it moved to Patenga on 6 December to work with No 903 (Tactical) Wing.  It moved to Rangoon in May 1945 and disbanded at Kuala Lumpur on 1 March 1946.


No 1328 Wing

Formed at Bari, Italy on 1 September1944, it was transferred to the Balkan Air Force and disbanded at Graz on 30 April 1946.

No 1329 Wing

Formed at Davidstow Moor on 23 October 1944, it moved to India in January 1945 and Penang in September 1945, disbanding at Tengah on 21 April 1946.


No 1330 Wing

Formed at Davidstow Moor on 23 October 1944, it moved to India in January 1945 and later Burma, disbanding at Rangoon on 30 June 1946.


No 1331 Wing

Formed at Davidstow Moor on 23 October 1944, it moved to India in February 1945, later moving to Burma and then Hong Kong in October 1945, disbanding at Kai Tak on 31 July 1946.


No 1332 Wing

Formed at Bradwell Bay in January 1945, it disbanded on 1 July 1945.


No 1333 Wing

Formed at Manston in January 1945, it disbanded at Bradwell Bay on 16 October 1945,


No 1334 Wing

Formed at Kenley in January 1945, it disbanded at Gatwick on 1 August 1945.


No 1335 Wing

This formed in No 11 Group, Fighter Command at Kenley on 12 December 1944 to be employed with Air Disarmament formations.  It was transferred to No 103 Wing, Fighter Command on 13 February 1945, but had been transferred to BAFO by the time it disbanded at Gatwick on 10 September 1945.


No 1336 Wing

This formed in No 11 Group, Fighter Command at Detling on 12 December 1944 to be employed with Air Disarmament formations.  It was transferred to No 103 Wing, Fighter Command on 13 February 1945 but was transferred back to HQ Fighter Command on 20 June 1945, being despatched to Norway as part of No 88 Group and disbanded at Trondheim on 10 September 1945.


No 1337 Wing

This formed in No 10 Group, Fighter Command at Colerne on 12 December 1944 to be employed with Air Disarmament formations.  It was transferred to No 103 Wing, Fighter Command on 13 February 1945, but had been transferred to BAFO by the time it disbanded at Gatwick on 10 September 1945.


No 1338 Wing

This formed in No 10 Group, Fighter Command at Detling on 12 December 1944 to be employed with Air Disarmament formations.  It was transferred to No 103 Wing, Fighter Command on 13 February 1945 and in July began preparing to join 'Tiger' Force, but following the Japanese surrender was transferred back to Fighter Command on 15 September and disbanded at Llanbedr on 9 October 1945.


RAF Regiment (Malaya) Wing

This formed on an unknown date under the control of HQ FEAF and was transferred to No 230 Group on 1 June 1952.  On 11 November 1957 administrative control was transferred to HQ, No 224 Group.  On 1 September1958 it amalgamated with the RAF Regiment (Malaya) Depot to form a new RAF Regiment (Malaya) Wing at RAF Changi, under the functional control of HQ FEAF and administrative control of HQ, No 224 Group, and disbanded on 1 April 1960.
