15 Jul 1941 No 990 Squadron was formed at RAF Cardington to operate with 2nd Mobile Naval Base Defence Organisation RM
28 Jul 1941 Squadron proceeded to RAF Wilmslow for kitting out with tropical kit and Yellow Fever inoculations
30 Jul 1941 Squadron returned from RAF Wilmslow

13 Aug 1941 Advance party, proceeded to RM Training Centre, Hayling Island
15 Aug 1941 Remainder of squadron entrained at Cardington and proceeded to RM Training Centre, Hayling Island
18 Aug 1941 Squadron commence a 4-week military training course
September
 8 Sep 1941 Rear party moved from RAF Cardington to Hayling Island
13 Sep 1941 Four-week military training completed, but squadron to remain until proceeding overseas
16 Sep 1941 At the request of the Admiralty the Squadron was chosen to move to the Convoy Assembly Achorage, Loch Ewe
23 Sep 1941 Advance party departed Hayling Island for Loch Ewe
24 Sep 1941 Advance party arrived at Loch Ewe
26 Sep 1941 Squadron departed Hayling Island for Loch Ewe

On arrival 50% of squadron proceeded to Aultbea and the other 50% to Inverasdale on either side of the Loch

29 Sep 1941 MT vehicles were collected from Achnasheen

11 Oct 1941 3 x Hydrogen plants arrived at Poolewe, with one being taken to Aultbea
12 Oct 1941 2 x Hydron plants arrived at Inverasdale
November
22 Nov 1941 All sites were cleared pending a move
25 Nov 1941 Order to move the squadron rescinded by No 34 Group and squadron ordered to remain at present locations
26 Nov 1941 Re-occupation of all sites commenced
December
 1 Dec 1941 Squadron was re-organised as follows: -
  • SHQ and 'A' Flight at Aultbea
  • 'B' and 'C' Flights (as formed at Hayling Island) amalgamated into 'B' Flight at Camp E5 (Inverasdale)
 4 Dec 1941 Squadron advised it would remain at Loch Ewe until further notice
17 Dec 1941 Squadron ordered cease operating and prepare to embark
18 Dec 1941 Silicol plants departed for No 18 Balloon Centre, Bishopbriggs
21 Dec 1941 Loading of pack-up stores completed

Silicol plants arrived at No 18 BC, Bishopbriggs

22 Dec 1941 Pack-up convoy departed for No 14 MU, Carlisle via No 18 BC, Bishopbriggs
