Cranwell Graduations 1931


The following cadets graduated from the RAF College at Cranwell on 24 July 1931.  The reviewing officer at the graduation parade was Air Vice-Marshal Sir Charles L Lambe KCB, CMG, DSO.

Derek ADDENBROOKE (26195)

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Athletes, Rugby, Cross Country and Fencing.

He was commissioned on 25 Jul 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 25 Aug 1931.  He was reported missing in action on 3 Apr 1941 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was killed whilst flying in Blenheim IV, N3552 of No 101 Sqn, which lost without a trace on a raid to Brest.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Lionel Vincent ANDREWS (26196)

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of A Sqn.  He also represented the college in Soccer.

He was commissioned on 25 Jul 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 25 Aug 1931.  He was reported missing in action on 9 Sep 1940 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was killed whilst flying in Wellington IC, P9245 OJ-W of No 149 Sqn, which came down in the sea near Clacton.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Leslie Frank BROWN (26197)

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of B Sqn.  On graduating he was awarded the Humanistics Prize.

He was commissioned on 25 Jul 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 25 Aug 1931.  He retired on 10 Nov 1960 in the rank of Gp Capt.

 

Humphrey William Albert CHESTERMAN (26198) AFC

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Athletics and Rugby.

He was commissioned on 25 Jul 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 25 Aug 1931.  He resigned his permanent commission on 15 Aug 1936 in the rank of Fg Off.  However he was recalled to service on 2 Sep 1939, but was killed in action on xx xxx xxxx in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

 

Peter Edward DREW, (26199)

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.  He also represented the college in Hockey and Squash.

He was commissioned on 25 Jul 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 25 Aug 1931.  He was killed in action on 1 Aug 1940 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was killed whilst flying Blenheim IV, N3601 of No 236 Sqn, which was lost on a raid against Cherbourg airfield. He is buried in Biville Churchyard.

Neville Anthony Roy HALLIDAY (26200)

He entered the RAF College in 1929 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 25 Jul 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 25 Aug 1931.  He was reported missing in action on 12 Aug 1942 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was probably killed whilst flying in Sunderland II, T9090 of No 461 Sqn, which crashed in the Bay of Biscay whilst attempting a rescue during an ASR sortie.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Edward Cunliffe INGHAM (26201)

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.

He was commissioned on 25 Jul 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 25 Aug 1931.  He was killed on active service on 2 Jul 1940 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was possibly killed whilst flying in Defiant I, L6982 of the CGS, which crashed in a forced landing at Warmwell.  He was cremated at Weymouth Crematorium.

Neville Howard JACKSON (26202)

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.

He was commissioned on 25 Jul 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 25 Aug 1931.  He was killed in a flying accident on 25 May 1932 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was killed whilst flying Fury, K2064 of No 1 Sqn which collided with K2036 of the same unit near Shoreham.  He attempted to bale out but his parachute became entangled in the tail of the aircraft.

Archibald Campbell JOHNSTONE (26203)

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Athletics and Cross-Country.

He was commissioned on 25 Jul 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 25 Aug 1931.  He was killed in a flying accident on 26 Apr 1932 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was serving with No 23 Sqn and was killed in a collision with another aircraft over Hartfield in Sussex.

Christopher William Mitchell LING (26204) DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.  He also represented the college in Soccer, Cricket, Hockey and Athletics.  On graduating he was awarded the Sword of Honour.

He was commissioned on 25 Jul 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 25 Aug 1931.  He retired on 5 Jun 1946 in the rank of Gp Capt.

 

David Ivor Phorson MACNAIR (26206) CBE

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Rugby and Boxing.

He was commissioned on 25 Jul 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 25 Aug 1931.  He retired on 22 Nov 1957 in the rank of Gp Capt.

 

Andrew MCILWAINE (26205)

He entered the RAF College in 1929 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 25 Jul 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 25 Aug 1931.  He retired on 21 Nov 1962 retaining the rank of Gp Capt.

 

Arthur Douglas MESSENGER (26207) CBE

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Soccer, Tennis, Cricket and Fencing.  On graduating he was awarded the Hyde Thompson Memorial Prize.

He was commissioned on 25 Jul 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 25 Aug 1931.  He retired on 22 Aug 1960 in the rank of A/Cdre.

He was a graduate of the Joint Services Staff College and the RAF Staff College.

John Oliver William OLIVER (26208) CB, DSO, DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Rugby and Shooting.

He was commissioned on 25 Jul 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 25 Aug 1931.  He retired on 11 Oct 1961 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College and the Central Flying School.

Wilfrid Ewart OULTON (26209) CB, CBE, DSO, DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of A Sqn.  He also represented the college in Boxing.  On graduating he was awarded the Abdy Gerrard Fellows Memorial Prize.

He was commissioned on 25 Jul 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 25 Aug 1931.  He retired on 1 Jan 1961 in the rank of AVM.

He was a graduate of the Joint Services Staff College and the RAF Staff College.

Robert Humphrey PAGE (26210)

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of A Sqn.  He also represented the college in Fencing.

He was commissioned on 25 Jul 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 25 Aug 1931.  He died in service on 15 Feb 1942 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He transferred to the RAFO, Class A on 24 Oct 1936 and died at sea.

George John Lacey READ (26211) AFC

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of A Sqn.  He also represented the college in Cross Country.  On graduating he was awarded the R M Groves Memorial Prize.

He was commissioned on 25 Jul 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 25 Aug 1931.  He retired on 8 Jun 1959 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Norman Colpoy Simpson RUTTER (26212) CB, CBE, CEng, FIMechE, FRAeS

He entered the RAF College in 1929 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 25 Jul 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 25 Aug 1931.  He retired on 25 Jul 1965 retaining the rank of AVM.

 

Austin Charles SHEARN (26213)

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Cross Country.

He was commissioned on 25 Jul 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 25 Aug 1931.  He died in service on 20 Jan 1932 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was serving at RAF Upavon

William Waters STAINTHORPE (26214) AFC

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.

He was commissioned on 25 Jul 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 25 Aug 1931.  He was killed in action on 27 Feb 1941 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was killed whilst flying in Hampden I, X3124 OL-H of No 83 Sqn, which crashed into high ground near Stafford on its return from a raid on Cologne.  He is buried in Scampton (St John the Baptist) Churchyard.

Frank Edmund STOKES (26215) MA, AFRAeS

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.

He was commissioned on 25 Jul 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 25 Aug 1931.  He retired on 29 Aug 1961 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

William Henry Nigel TURNER (26216) DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Rowing.

He was commissioned on 25 Jul 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 25 Aug 1931.  He retired on 26 Oct 1957 in the rank of Gp Capt.

 

Wyndham Powis WELCH (26217)

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.

He was commissioned on 25 Jul 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 25 Aug 1931.  He retired on 1 Sep 1957 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Stanley Charles WIDDOWS (26218) CB, DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl, after being awarded a scholarship as an apprentice at Halton.  He also represented the college in Shooting.

He was commissioned on 25 Jul 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 25 Aug 1931.  He retired on 29 Dec 1958 in the rank of A/Cdre.

He was a graduate of the Imperial Defence College and the RAF Staff College.

Cedric Watcyn WILLIAMS (26219)

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl after being awarded a scholarship as an apprentice at Halton.  He also represented the college in Boxing and Cross Country.

He was commissioned on 25 Jul 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 25 Aug 1931.  He was killed in action on 25 Aug 1940 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was killed whilst flying in Hurricane I, R4199 of No 17 Sqn, which was shot down by Bf 110s in a head-on attack.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Frederick Claude DAUBNEY (26220) CBE

He entered the RAF College in 1929, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.  He also represented the college in Rugby and Athletics.

He was commissioned on 1 Sep 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 20 Oct 1931.  He retired on 1 Jul 1946 in the rank of Gp Capt.

Richard Edgar BARNETT (26222) MBE

He entered the RAF College in 1930 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 19 Dec 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1932.  He resigned his permanent commission on 11 Aug 1941 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

 

Eric Arthur COLLYNS (26223)

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Rugby and Swimming.

He was commissioned on 19 Dec 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1932.  He was killed in a flying accident on 25 Jul 1933 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was killed whilst flying Moth, K1212 of No 8 Sqn when he crashed on the bombing range in Aden.  He is buried in Maala Cemetery.

Archibald Mouritz DORAN (26224)

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Athletics, Cricket and Rugby.

He was commissioned on 19 Dec 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1932.  He was killed in a flying accident on 21 Mar 1935 in the rank of Fg Off.

He was killed whilst flying in the rear of Wapiti, K2265 of the Air Armament School when he fell out of the aircraft over Eastchurch.

Leonard Nicholas ELSNER (26225)

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.  He also represented the college in Rugby.

He was commissioned on 19 Dec 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1932.  He was killed in a flying accident on 5 Oct 1934 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He was flying Baffin, K4075 of No. 810 (Fleet Torpedo-Bomber) Sqn,  when he was involved in a flying accident in the Firth of Forth and is believed to have drowned.

Sir Reginald Herbert Embleton EMSON (26226) KBE, CB, AFC

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.  He also represented the college in Rugby and Cricket.  On graduating he was awarded the Sword of Honour.

He was commissioned on 19 Dec 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1932.  He retired on 1 Mar 1969 in the rank of AM.

He was a graduate of the Imperial Defence College and the Joint Services Staff College.

Donald McDonald FENTON (26227)

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.

He was commissioned on 19 Dec 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1932.  He died in service on 15 Apr 1937 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He died whilst serving in Iraq and is buried in Ma'asker Al Raschid RAF Cemetery.

Donald Edward FORMAN (26228)

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Swimming and Fencing.

He was commissioned on 19 Dec 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1932.  He was killed in a flying accident on 2 Dec 1932 in the rank of Plt Off.

He was killed whilst flying Horsley II, S1449 of No 36 Sqn, which dived into the sea during a practice torpedo attack.

Albert Woodburne GEOGHEGAN (26229)

He entered the RAF College in 1930 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 19 Dec 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1932.  He was dismissed from the service by sentence of a General Court Marshal on 30 Jun 1946 in the rank of Gp Capt.

 

Arthur Roger GLENCROSS (26230)

He entered the RAF College in 1930 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 19 Dec 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1932.  He was reported missing in action on 28 May 1940 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was flying Wellington IC, L7793 of No 37 Sqn, which force landed near Ostend on 26 May 1940.  He was drowned in the sinking of the SS Abukir by an E-boat and is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Paul Slocombe GOMEZ (26231) CBE

He entered the RAF College in 1930 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 19 Dec 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1932.  He retired on 29 Oct 1957 in the rank of Gp Capt.

 

Norman George GOODMAN (26232) CBE

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of C Sqn.  He also represented the college in Athletics.

He was commissioned on 19 Dec 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1932.  He retired on 2 May 1959 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the Joint Services Staff College and the RAF Staff College.

Matthew Barr HAMILTON (26233)

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of B Sqn.  He also represented the college in Cross-Country.

He was commissioned on 19 Dec 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1932.  He retired on 2 Jun 1948 in the rank of Gp Capt.

 

Humphrey Peter JENKINS (26234) DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1930 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 19 Dec 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1932.  He retired on 5 May 1955 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

 

David Victor JOHNSON (26235)

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of A Sqn.  He also represented the college in Soccer.

He was commissioned on 19 Dec 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1932.  He was killed in action on 28 Apr 1941 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was killed whilst flying as a passenger in Blenheim IV, Z5898 of ME Comms Flt, which was transporting personnel from Tobruk to Egypt when it was shot down by a Bf 109 as it took off.  He is commemorated on the Alamein Memorial.

Stephen Patrick LANGSTON (26236)

He entered the RAF College in 1930 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 19 Dec 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1932.  He resigned his permanent commission on 5 Jan 1941 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

 

Rupert Henry Archibald LEIGH (26237)

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Under Officer.  He also represented the college in Rugby, Tennis, Squash and Hockey.

He was commissioned on 19 Dec 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1932.  He retired on 7 Dec 1954 retaining the rank of A/Cdre.

 

John Tosswill LONGMAN (26238)

He entered the RAF College in 1930 and was a member of A Sqn.

He was commissioned on 19 Dec 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1932.  He was killed in a flying accident on 15 May 1933 in the rank of Plt Off.

He drowned whilst attempting too land on the deck of HMS Furious.  Attempting to go-around for a second attempt, the aircraft lacked sufficient speed and ran off the deck into the sea ahead of the ship.

Geoffrey Henry Owen MILLS (26239)

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of B Sqn.  He also represented the college in Fencing.  On graduating he was awarded the Abdy Gerrard Fellows Memorial Prize and the John Anthony Chance Memorial Prize.

He was commissioned on 19 Dec 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1932.  He was killed in a flying accident on 3 Feb 1939 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was killed when the aircraft he was flying suffered an engine failure.  His two passengers managed to bale out but he crashed as he was attempting to make a forced landing.  He is buried in Ramleh War Cemetery.

Reginald MONKS (26240)

He entered the RAF College in 1930 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 19 Dec 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1932.  He was killed in a flying accident on 12 Sep 1938 in the rank of Flt Lt.

He was killed whilst flying as a crew member in Whitley, K7207 of the Royal Aircraft Establishment, piloted by Sqn Ldr M J Adam, when it flew into the ground on take off as a result of the aileron controls being locked.  Sqn Ldr Adam and another crew member were also killed.

George Wroughton MONTAGU (26241)

He entered the RAF College in 1930 and was a member of C Sqn.

He was commissioned on 19 Dec 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1932.  He was killed in action on 21 Dec 1940 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

He was killed whilst flying Blenheim IV, R3878 of No 236 Sqn, which was probably shot down by a fighter near Brest. He is buried in Bayeux War Cemetery.

Thomas Alfred Boyd PARSELLE (26242) CB, CBE

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Athletics, Rugby, Hockey and Squash.

He was commissioned on 19 Dec 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1932.  He retired on 6 Jun 1964 in the rank of AVM.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.

Eric Frederick PORTER (26243)

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Soccer.

He was commissioned on 19 Dec 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1932.  He was reported missing in action on 25 Feb 1944 in the rank of Wg Cdr.

He was killed whilst flying in Lancaster III, JB479 GT-K of No 156 Sqn, which was lost on a raid to Schweinfurt.  He is buried in Durnbach War Cemetery.

David PROWSE (26244)

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Rugby, Soccer, Rowing and Athletics.

He was commissioned on 19 Dec 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1932.  He resigned his permanent commission on ? in the rank of Plt Off.

 

Alan PYKE (26245) CB, OBE, FIMechE, AFRAeS

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.

He was commissioned on 19 Dec 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1932.  He retired on 5 Jul 1961 retaining the rank of A/Cdre.

 

Henry Digby RAYNHAM (26246)

He entered the RAF College in 1930 and was a member of B Sqn.

He was commissioned on 19 Dec 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1932.  He resigned his permanent commission on 19 Jan 1935 in the rank of Fg Off.  However he was recalled to service on 1 Sep 1939, reverting to the retired list on 3 Jun 1944 in the rank of Sqn Ldr.

 

Walter Philip SUTCLIFFE (26247) CB, DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of A Sqn.  On graduating he was awarded the R M Groves Memorial Prize.

He was commissioned on 19 Dec 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1932.  He retired on 16 Apr 1961 in the rank of A/Cdre.

 

Frank Hastings TYSON (26248)

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of C Sqn.  He also represented the college in Shooting.

He was commissioned on 19 Dec 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1932.  He retired on 14 Feb 1962 in the rank of Gp Capt.

He was a graduate of the Joint Services Staff College, the RAF Staff College and the Central Flying School.

John Nicholas Haworth WHITWORTH (26249) CB, DSO, DFC and Bar

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of B Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  He also represented the college in Athletics, Cross Country and Shooting.

He was commissioned on 19 Dec 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1932.  He retired on 25 Jul 1964 in the rank of A/Cdre.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College and the Central Flying School.

Mervyn Francis Douglas WILLIAMS (26250) CBE, DSO

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of A Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Cpl.  On graduating he was awarded the Humanistics Prize.

He was commissioned on 19 Dec 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1932.  He retired on 3 Jul 1958 in the rank of Gp Capt.

 

John WORRALL (26251) CB, DFC

He entered the RAF College in 1930, was a member of C Sqn and attained the rank of Flt Cdt Sgt.  He also represented the college in Hockey.

He was commissioned on 19 Dec 1931 in the rank of Pilot Officer which was gazetted on 19 Jan 1932.  He retired on 5 Aug 1963 in the rank of AVM.

He was a graduate of the RAF Staff College.
