Casualties
- January - December 1931
This section covers RAF personnel killed between 1 January
and 31 December 1931. The information has been gleaned from a variety of sources
including the Commonwealth War Graves registers, Air Force Lists, Flight
magazine and a variety of other publications and books. Entries in italics
indicated that exact confirmation of these details have not yet been confirmed.

Angell was court martialed on a charge of 'neglect of flying' but was found
not guilty. |

P Anning. They were carrying out a gliding turn during approach for a
practice forced landing when they lost flying speed . The court of inquiry
decided that the instructor, left the correction of this fault until it was
too late to recover aircraft from the resulting dive. |

Having carried out an inspection of RAF
Tangmere, he had taken off in his De Havilland Moth (K1838), with his PA
flying another Moth when a formation of Siskins of No 43 Sqn, seeing his
PA’s aircraft decided to pay him an aerial salute. Unfortunately, the
formation dived directly at the AVM, whom they could not see and the Siskin
on the left of the formation, flown by Sgt C G Wareham, caught the wing of
his Moth. Going into a spin, the pilot recovered and the AVM took to his
parachute, but they were too low, the AVM being killed when he hit the
ground without a fully deployed parachute and his pilot, Flt Lt H M Moody,
when the aircraft hit the ground. The inquest brought a verdict of
accidental death. |

He was the pilot of Moth, K1838 of No 24
Sqn with AVM F V Holt, the AOC, Fighting Area as his passenger. They had
just taken off from RAF Tangmere after the AOC an carried out an inspection
of the station together with the AOC's PA, who was flying another Moth when
a formation of Siskins of No 43 Sqn, seeing his PA’s aircraft decided to pay

He was testing a Hawker Horsley fitted
with an alternative engine (probably J8932) with a Mr Alexander of the RAE
on 4 May 1931, when the aircraft became uncontrollable and they were forced
to abandon it at around 500 ft. Waghorn waited for Alexander to jump before
himself leaving the aircraft and he suffered injuries when he hit a
building, from which he died three days later. |

Supermarine S6, N247, which had won the 1929 Schneider Trophy Race and also
held the world air speed record at that time. The aircraft began to
'porpoise' on take off and on the third attempt to lift off the aircraft
left the water but immediately nose dived into the sea and turned over. |

out a dummy torpedo attack on a ship when the pilot of the aircraft was
blinded by jettisoned fuel and dived into the sea near Farmgusta, Cyprus.
His pilot, Lt Cdr F S Benney RN was also killed. |
