He was captain of one of six crews and four Vulcans from 83 Squadron which took part in Operation 'Profiteer' in June 1959. This involved the aircraft operating from Butterworth in Malaysia having deployed there from the UK. During this operation Flight Lieutenant Ward 's crew dropped six 1,000lb bombs, thus becoming the first crew to demonstrate that the Vulcan could operate in the conventional role.
From 1985 to 87, he was general-Manager of Bromley Health Authority and has or holds various offices in a number of other organisations.
