After gaining a degree in Physics at Magdelen College, she worked as a guided weapons engineer for Marconi before joining the RAF.  In 1990 she was the first female officer selected to attend the demanding GD Aero-Systems Course, from which she emerged as the top student.  In 1997, she was a member of the team developing the THRUST supersonic car.
