On 20 February 1963, he was instructing Pilot Officer Adrian Keith Macklen in Jet Provost T Mk 3, XN642, when it suffered an engine failure on take off. He managed to abandon the aircraft, which crashed 2 miles north of RAF Leeming but his student was killed.
