At Cranwell he represented the College at Hockey and attained the rank of Senior Flight Cadet. In 1957 - 58, he was a member of the 'Black Arrows' and during the 1957 season prevented the team suffering a disaster. At the start of their display, he spotted an Auster in their flight path, calling over the radio "*****! Look Out!" causing the team to carry out an impromptu bomb burst. Retired at his own request.
