Having attended West Bridgford Grammar School in  Nottinghamshire, on leaving school, he was offered a professional place with Nottinghamshire CCC but chose to join the RAF instead.

Whilst commanding No 44 Squadron he was responsible for leading the planning of the 'Black Buck' missions by Vulcan against Port Stanley airfield during the Falkland's war.
