Mechanical Transport (B Vehicles) - Tenders and Trucks


Throughout its life the RAF has used more motor vehicles then it has aircraft.  The term MT mean Mechanical Transport rather then Motor Transport as some of the earliest vehicles used were steam powered.  Much of the RAF's early MT equipment was taken over form the RFC and RNAS and much of this equipment continued to be used into the 1920s and even 1930s but in the 1920s it began to acquire its own equipment directly.

This list has been broken down into groups as shown above but does not claim to be exhaustive and further research is being undertaken.

W1 = Weight with vehicle equipment, but without load. W2 = Weight with vehicle equipment and load. L = Length. W = Width. H = Height. H(max) = Maximum Height. H(min) = Minimum Height. ST(max) - Maximum Shipping Tonnage. ST(min) = Minimum Shipping Tonnage, WB = Wheelbase.  GC = Ground Clearance

Units of measurements are those used at the time the vehicles were in service.

Forward control, high loading airportable chassis fitted with a split type cab and an all-steel cargo body and detachable canvas tilt cover.  The cover is supported on detachable metal hoops and secured to the body sides by lashing ropes.

 A collapsible type steering column with an easily detached steering wheel is fitted to facilitate loading into an aircraft.  With the steering wheel removed, steering control for aircraft loading is effected by a tiller bar specially provided for the purpose.  A further aid for aircraft loading is provided in the form of two special clamps for the compression of the front road springs to reduce the overall height.

The refueller is a combination of an engine powered prime mover and full trailer.  The prime mover is fitted with a 3,500 gallon tank and pumping equipment.  The pumping equipment on the prime mover is designed to self load both tanks either separately or at the same time and for refuelling and defuelling aircraft with large capacity fuel tanks i.e. up to or in excess of 10,000 gallons.

The 2,500 gallon refueller, Mk 3 is used for refuelling and defuelling aircraft; it is capable of dispensing all standard grades of AVTUR, AVTAG and AVGAS.  The vehicle is equipped for pressure refuelling through two 60ft 2½in bore reel hoses and for open-line refuelling through two 30ft 2½in bore boom hoses.  When the vehicle is to be transported by  air, the cab doors, some open-line refuelling equipment and some ancillary equipment must be removed.
