Citation for the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross

SCANNELL, Maxwell, F/L, AFC (59609, Royal Air Force) - No.77 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force.

Flight Lieutenant Scannell was attached to No.77 Squadron to instruct in the conversion to Meteor aircraft.  Before and after this conversion he flew in operations with the squadron on 107 missions on Mustang and Meteor aircraft.  His skilled leadership and aggressiveness were instrumental on several occasions in defeating attacks of numerically superior forces and have been at all times an inspiration to members of this squadron.  His tour of duty with No.77 Squadron has brought great credit to himself and the Royal Air Force."
